Predilation, sizing and post-dilation scoring in patients undergoing everolimus-eluting bioresorbable scaffold implantation for prediction of cardiac…

2017

Aims: The aim of the study was to develop a scoring model to evaluate the quality of bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) implantation and determine the model's usefulness in predicting adverse cardiac events. Methods and results: The implantation technique and clinical outcomes of 1,736 lesions treated with BVS were analysed using the GHOST-EU registry. Predilation, scaffold sizing, and post-dilation (PSP) were scored according to the hazard model derived from the weight of these variables. The primary end-point was a one-year device-oriented composite endpoint (DoCE) composed of cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction, and clinically driven target lesion revascularisation. Activation of glycine receptors modulates spontaneous epileptiform activity in the immature rat hippocampus

2014

While the expression of glycine receptors in the immature hippocampus has been shown, no information about the role of glycine receptors in controlling the excitability in the immature CNS is available. Therefore, we examined the effect of glycinergic agonists and antagonists in the CA3 region of an intact corticohippocampal preparation of the immature (postnatal days 4-7) rat using field potential recordings. Bath application of 100 μM taurine or 10 μM glycine enhanced the occurrence of recurrent epileptiform activity induced by 20 μM 4-aminopyridine in low Mg(2+) solution. This proconvulsive effect was prevented by 3 μM strychnine or after incubation with the loop diuretic bumetanide (10 …

Environmental taxation, information precision, and information sharing

2022

We analyze how environmental taxes should be optimally levied when the regulators and firms face costs uncertainties in a Stackelberg-Cournot game. We allow linear-quadratic payoffs functions coupled with an affine information structure encompassing common and private information with noisy signals. In the first period, the regulator chooses the intensity of emissions taxes in order to reduce externalities. In the second period, facing industry-related and firm-specific shocks, firms compete in the marketplace as Cournot rivals and choose outputs. We show that, given costs uncertainties with non-uniform quality of signals across firms, the regulator sets differentiated tax policy. We also e…

Film blowing of silane-modified polyethylene

2009

The grafting of vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) onto polyethylene (PE) with the help of small amounts of peroxides was investigated to film-blow these modified materials. The degree of crosslinking was kept very low to achieve good melt processability and improved mechanical properties. The possibility of obtaining modified PE films with improved properties and regularly distributed crosslinking with a single processing step demonstrates the uniqueness of this study. The additive concentration was established through preliminary studies; with a batch mixer, it was possible to process the modified PE in the film-blowing operation. Water treatment of the modified films after film blowing allowed …

Structure-property relationships of polycarbonate diol-based polyurethanes as a function of soft segment content and molar mass

2014

Segmented thermoplastic polyurethanes (PUs) have been synthesized with polycarbonate diol as soft segment and 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and butanediol as hard segment. Two different series employing two different soft-segment molar mass, 1000 and 2000 g/mol, and by changing the hard-segment content from 32 to 67% have been investigated with the aim to elucidate the effect of the different content variations on the properties. Morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties have been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), wide angle X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, tensile and…

Multiscale modeling of polycrystalline materials: A boundary element approach to material degradation and fracture

2015

Abstract In this work, a two-scale approach to degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is proposed. The formulation involves the engineering component level (macro-scale) and the material grain level (micro-scale). The macro-continuum is modeled using a three-dimensional boundary element formulation in which the presence of damage is formulated through an initial stress approach to account for the local softening in the neighborhood of points experiencing degradation at the micro-scale. The microscopic degradation is explicitly modeled by associating Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) to relevant points of the macro continuum, for representing the polycrystalline microstruct…

Impact of Si on the high-temperature oxidation of AlCr(Si)N coatings

2022

The resistance of wear protective coatings against oxidation is crucial for their use at high temperatures. Here, three nanocomposite AlCr(Si)N coatings with a fixed Al/Cr atomic ratio of 70/30 and a varying Si-content of 0 at.%, 2.5 at.% and 5 at.% were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray in order to understand the oxidation behavior depending on their Si-content. Additionally, a partially oxidized AlCrSiN coating with 5 at.% Si on a sapphire substrate was studied across the coating thickness by depth-resolved cross-sectional X-ray nanodiffraction and scanning trans-mission electron microscopy to investigate the elemental composition, morphol…

Correction: Mechanical properties of provisional dental materials: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2018

Provisional restorations represent an important phase during the rehabilitation process, knowledge of the mechanical properties of the available materials allows us to predict their clinical performance. At present, there is no systematic review, which supports the clinicians’ criteria, in the selection of a specific material over another for a particular clinical situation. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess and compare the mechanical properties of dimethacrylates and monomethacrylates used in fabricating direct provisional restorations, in terms of flexural strength, fracture toughness and hardness. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines. The searche…

Thermo- and Light-Responsive Polymers Containing Photoswitchable Azobenzene End Groups

2009

Telechelic thermo- and light-responsive polymers based on poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) P(OEGMA) with azobenzene functionalities at the end groups were synthesized. In a reversible addition−fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using a functionalized chain transfer agent (CTA) containing a pentafluorophenyl (PFP) activated ester, oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA, Mn ∼ 300 g mol−1) could successfully be polymerized with good control over molecular weight, very high conversions, and narrow molecular weight distributions. Polymers derived from this CTA possessed an activated ester at the α-end of the polymer chain as well as a dithio…
