Neridronate prevents bone loss in patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer.
2004
Today, androgen deprivation therapy is a cornerstone of treatment for advanced prostate cancer, although it presents important complications such as osteoporosis. Neridronate, a relatively new bisphosphonate, is able to prevent bone loss in patients with prostate cancer during androgen ablation. Introduction: Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) is a cornerstone of treatment for advanced prostate cancer. This therapy has iatrogenic complications, such as osteoporosis. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of neridronate, a relatively new bisphosphonate, to prevent bone loss during androgen ablation. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight osteoporotic patients with prostate cancer, tre…
Influence of sutures configuration on the strength of tendon-patch joints for rotator cuff tears treatment
2019
Abstract Purpose Massive rotator cuff tears are common in the aging population. The incidence of failed rotator cuff repairs is still quite high, especially in the treatment of full-thickness tears or revision repairs. In this context, natural and synthetic meshes can be used as augmentation scaffolds or as devices to close the gap between a retracted tendon and the bone. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the ultimate tensile strength of different tendon-patch joints in order to consider their use in the treatment of massive cuff tears. Materials and methods Porcine tendons and a synthetic low-density polypropylene mesh have been used. A preliminary study on the tensile strength of te…
COMPliance and Arthralgia in Clinical Therapy: the COMPACT trial, assessing the incidence of arthralgia, and compliance within the first year of adju…
2014
5 Office-based Professional Association Gynecologic Oncologists e.V. in Germany (BNGO e.V.), Berlin; 6 Background: This prospective study evaluated the relationship between arthralgia and compliance during the first year of adjuvant anastrozole therapy in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer. Patients and methods: COMPliance and Arthralgia in Clinical Therapy (COMPACT) was an open-label, multicenter, noninterventional study conducted in Germany. Patients had started adjuvant anastrozole 3-6 months before the study start. The primary end points were arthralgia, compliance, and the relationship between compliance and arthralgia, assessed at specific time poi…
Extracellular matrix regulation of PTHrP and PTH/PTHrP receptor in a human breast cancer cell line
1999
AbstractIt was previously reported that 8701-BC breast cancer cells express the gene for parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) and its cognate receptor (PTHrP-R), and release immunoreactive PTHrP in the extracellular medium; it was also found that PTHrP, in turn, exerts a role on the proliferative and invasive behavior in vitro of the same cell line. On the other hand, evidence has been produced that adhesion of 8701-BC cells onto different collagen substrates influences in various ways a number of phenotypic expressions, such as cell growth, motility, invasion of reconstituted basement membrane and production of lytic enzymes of the extracellular matrix (ECM). In light of these previ…
Endocannabinoid Role in Synaptic Plasticity and Learning
2009
Endocannabinoids have recently emerged as versatile modulators of synaptic transmission and can act as retrograde neurotransmitters. As they cannot be stored in synaptic vesicles, endocannabinoid signaling is believed to start ‘on-demand,’ via a stimulus-dependent synthesis from membranous precursors at the postsynaptic site. After synthesis, endocannabinoids bind presynaptically to cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptors, leading to a short- or long-term suppression of neurotransmitter release. CB1 receptors are present in a plethora of different synaptic connections in the brain. Electrophysiological and behavioral analyses of mutant mice lacking CB1 receptors and of pharmacologically treated …
Chapter 31 Transcranial magnetic stimulation studies of contralesional space attention deficits
2002
Publisher Summary The power of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to disrupt and modulate the neural activity in focal brain regions has provided researchers in this field a promising tool to empirically test specific neuropsychological models and constructs of contralesional space attention deficits. A group of studies has used TMS to transiently disrupt the cortical activity of the focal brain areas in normal subjects to replicate the effects of neurological lesions. This chapter discusses a number of studies, using single-pulse, paired-TMS, and repetitive TMS (rTMS) and different experimental paradigms that show how this technique can be of fundamental importance, in elucidating the…
MDS-191: Long-Term Efficacy and Safety of Luspatercept in Lower-Risk Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS): Phase 2 PACE-MDS Study
2020
Background: Luspatercept, a first-in-class erythroid maturation agent, has been investigated in patients with LR-MDS and ring sideroblasts (RS) (MEDALIST; Fenaux and Platzbecker NEJM 2020) and in an ongoing Phase 3 trial regardless of RS status (COMMANDS, NCT03682536 ). The previously reported Phase 2 trial of luspatercept (Platzbecker Lanc Onc 2017) includes subtypes of LR-MDS with and without RS, regardless of prior ESA exposure, and various EPO levels. Aims: Evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of luspatercept in LR-MDS. Methods: Patients were IPSS low/int-1, age ≥ 18 years, Hgb NCT01749514 ; NCT02268383 ). Results: As of 13July2019, 115 patients were enrolled, of whom 108 were tre…
Hyaluronan‐coated poly(propylene imine) dendrimers as biomimetic nanocarriers of doxorubicin
2022
A coating technology based on low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA) and ferulic acid (FA) was applied to the coating of low generation poly(propylene imine) dendrimers through a biocompatible hexa(ethylene glycol) spacer. The ensuing HA-FA-HEG-PPID dendrimeric materials showed interesting loading capability (between 7.65% and 9.08%) regarding anticancer agent doxorubicin, and their interactions with the drug appeared to hamper the drug release in the physiological environment. Thus, the stable nanostructured loaded delivery systems were able to internalize into cells expressing the HA receptor CD44 and to demonstrate high cytotoxicity comparable to that shown by equivalent amounts of fr…

Perorāli ievadīta metformīna ietekme uz neiroiekaisumu un smadzeņu neironālo plasticitāti Alcheimera slimības tipa modeļa žurkās
2019
Alcheimera slimība (AD) ir pasaulē visbiežāk sastopamā neirodeģeneratīvā saslimšana, kā arī biežākais demences izraisītājs, turklāt šīs slimības izplatība ar katru gadu pieaug. Līdz šim izmantota simptomātiska terapija un kopš 2003. gada nav apstiprināts neviens jauns medikaments AD ārstēšanai, tādēļ arvien tiek meklēti jauni terapijas virzieni (Hung and Fu, 2017). Ņemot vērā, ka AD pacientu smadzenēs novērojami glikozes metabolisma traucējumi un paaugstināts cerebrālais glikozes līmenis (Campbell et al., 2017), mēs pārbaudījām antidiabētiskā preparāta metformīna devu (75 mg/kg un 100 mg/kg) ietekmi uz neiroieksumu un neironālo plasticitāti streptozocīna (STZ) izraisītāAD tipa modeļa žurkās…
