Metallo-Polymer Chain Extension Controls the Morphology and Release Kinetics of Microparticles Composed of Terpyridine-Capped Polylactides and their …

2016

Control over morphology and porosity of supramolecular complexed polylactide (PLA) microparticles can be achieved by manipulation of the supramolecular interactions between their constituent polymeric building blocks. It is expected that such modular systems are ideal candidates to serve as degradable delivery carriers. In view of this goal, this study reports about a modular fabrication of biodegradable microparticles from terpyridine (TPy) and bisterpyridine (bisTPy) end-functionalized PLAs that can be transiently extended by chain association through differently strong complexation to three metal cations: Ni2+ , Co2+ , or Fe2+ . Further influence on the morphology of the particles can be…

Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Dimethacrylates with Cleavable Ketal Sites: Precursors for Cleavable PEG-Hydrogels.

2017

The authors introduce poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) based macromonomers containing acid-labile ketal moieties as well as terminal methacrylate units that are amenable to radical polymerization. The synthesis of PEGs of different molecular weights (ranging from 2000 to 13 000 g mol-1 with polydispersities <1.15) with a central ketal unit (PEG-ketal-diol) and their conversion to PEG-ketal-dimethacrylates (PEG-ketal-DMA) is introduced. Degradation rates of both PEG-ketal-diols and PEG-ketal-DMA are investigated by in situ 1 H NMR kinetic studies in deuterated phosphate buffer. Hydrogels containing 0, 5, or 10 wt% of PEG-ketal-DMA and 100, 95, or 90 wt% of PEG-DMA, respectively, are synthesized a…

Peculiar behavior of degenerative chain transfer polymerization of a phosphonated methacrylate

2009

Living/controlled radical polymerization of dimethyl(methacryloyloxy)methyl phosphonate (MAPC) has been attempted using degenerative transfer to produce block copolymers. RAFT polymerization of this monomer is sensitive to very low level of oxygen and in any case limited to low monomer conversion. Reverse iodine transfer polymerization (RITP) leads to higher monomer conversion with a limited amount of living polymer (55% by H NMR), precluding an efficient synthesis of block copolymers. A PMMA-b-PMAPC diblock copolymer was therefore synthesized by iodine transfer polymerization (ITP) of MAPC from a PMMA-Imacro-chain transfer agent prepared by RITP. The diblock copolymer, purified by selectiv…

Plasma Polymer Membranes for Immobilising Metalloporphyrins

2013

Atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge formation of organosilicon thin films loaded with zinc 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (Zn(TPP)) was investigated for different deposition conditions. UV–visible spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed the effects of the metalloporpyhrins injection parameters and the plasma polymerisation conditions can affect the dispersion of the metalloporphyrins and the morphology of the coatings. The stability of the embedded Zn(TPP) molecules was investigated by orbitrap mass spectrometry.

The Role of Internal Rotational Barriers in Polymer Melt Chain Dynamics

2002

We present molecular dynamics simulations on 1,4-polybutadiene comparing the dynamics of melt chains between chemically realistic models and a freely rotating chain version of one of the models. These models exhibit the same liquid structure, as measured by the structure factor, and meso- to large-scale chain structure, as measured by the Rouse-mode amplitudes. We show that in this case the Rouse-like chain dynamics as observable in the momentum transfer range of neutron spin-echo experiments is the same for the chains with and without torsion barriers. Our results bear on a recent comparative neutron spin-echo study of the chain dynamics of two polymers with similar chain structure which r…

Spherulite formation in a ?noncrystalline? two-dimensional hydrogen-bond assembly

1996

4-Urazoyl benzoic acid groups 1 are attached as terminal end group to an oligoisobutene. According to wide-angle X-ray scattering the material is amorphous. Differential scanning calorimetry, small-angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and polarizing microscopy show that the polar head groups form ordered two-dimensional assemblies which organize into spherulites. Temperature-dependent SAXS measurements and the d.s.c. analysis give a close insight into the order-disorder (“melting”) process of the two-dimensional clusters which form macroscopic spherulites. The order-disorder transition of the clusters is closely related to the dynamics and order of the polyisobutene cha…

Physicochemical and Rheological Characterization of Different Low Molecular Weight Gellan Gum Products and Derived Ionotropic Crosslinked Hydrogels

2021

A series of four different low molecular weight gellan gum products was obtained by alkaline hydrolysis with the aim to investigate the impact of the molecular weight on the rheological properties of the polysaccharide aqueous dispersions and on the physicochemical characteristics of derived ionotropic crosslinked hydrogels. In particular, thermo-rheological analysis was conducted on aqueous dispersions to study the influence of molecular weight on the thermogelation properties typical of the native polysaccharide while strain sweep experiments were conducted to establish if aqueous dispersion shows a viscoelastic behavior. The effect of different Ca2+ on the rheological properties of hydro…

Interfacial tension and interaction parameters

1994

In view of various contradictory theoretical equations relating the interfacial tension σ between phase-separated polymer solutions to the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter of the system, the idea that σ should depend on the extent of the ‘hump’ in the concentration dependence of the Gibbs energy of mixing was studied. This investigation is based on 12 series of σ( T ) measurements reported in the literature and on additional experiments for the system cyclohexane/polystyrene. To quantify the extent of the ‘hump’, a reduced ‘hump energy’ ɛ was introduced and its value calculated for different temperatures from the measured critical data of the systems. The analysis of the entire experimen…

Bioactive Scaffolds Based on Amine-Functionalized Gellan Gum for the Osteogenic Differentiation of Gingival Mesenchymal Stem Cells

2022

With the aim to produce a cellularized construct for the guided bone regeneration of dento-alveolar defects, here we produce a porous scaffold using an amine derivative of gellan gum to host gingival mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) and allow their osteochondral differentiation. Three derivatives were produced by using the same synthetic procedure, and the viscoelastic properties of their aqueous dispersions were investigated and compared to those of the native polysaccharide to choose the derivative with suitable properties for the scaffold production. Freeze-drying was used to obtain a porous sponge that can be rehydrated with the cells’ suspension to produce an implantable cell containing …

Single Molecules Probing the Freezing of Polymer Melts: A Molecular Dynamics Study for Various Molecule-Chain Linkages

2010

8 pages; International audience; We present molecular dynamics simulations of coarse-grained model systems of a glassforming polymer matrix containing fluorescent probe molecules. These probe molecules are either dispersed in the matrix or covalently attached to the center or the end of a dilute fraction of the polymer chains. We show that in all cases the translational and rotational relaxation of the probe molecules is a faithful sensor for the glass transition of the matrix as determined from a mode-coupling analysis or Vogel-Fulcher analysis of their R-relaxation behavior. Matrix and dumbbell related relaxation processes show a clear violation of the Stokes-Einstein-Debye laws. In accor…
