One‐pot synthesis of [2+2]‐helicate‐like macrocycle and 2+4‐μ4‐oxo tetranuclear open frame complexes : Chiroptical properties and asymmetric oxidativ…
2020
Synthesis of binuclear Cu(II) terminally closed [2+2]‐ double‐stranded helicate‐like macrocycles 1, 1′,1″, 2, 2′, 2″ and 2+4‐μ4‐oxo tetranuclear open frame complexes 3, 3′, 3″, 4, 4′, 4″ are established. Adapting one‐pot self‐assembly technique from simple three components systems: 1,1′‐binaphthyl‐2,2′‐diamine, 4‐methyl‐2,6‐diformyl phenol and cupric salts, the helicate‐like [2+2]‐ macrocyclic complexes 1–1″, 2–2″ and 2+4‐μ4‐oxo tetranuclear complexes 3–3″, 4–4″ were obtained by appropriately altering the reaction condition such as temperature and subcomponent ratio. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were carried out for understanding the structural geometries, intermediates invo…
Performance of the cost-effective Planacon ® MCP-PMTs in strong magnetic fields
2020
We present the behavior of the cost-effective Planacon MCP-PMTs with pore diameter in the presence of axial magnetic fields up to 0.5 T. Having a batch of 62 devices of the same type, two MCP-PMTs were selected and their gain variation measured in different magnetic fields. These two otherwise identical devices satisfied the selection criteria by requiring the lowest (1.15 kV) and one of the highest (1.4 kV) bias voltage values to achieve a given gain. Both MCP-PMTs have a nearly identical tolerance of the strong magnetic field despite the significant difference in the bias voltage. This clarifies the mechanism of the B-field influence on the MCP-PMT gain, emphasizing the importance of the …
L'habitat néolithique récent de Geispolsheim "Forlen" (Bas-Rhin) : contribution à la périodisation de la culture de Munzingen et à l'étude de ses rel…
2011
The recent Neolithic site of Forlen in Geispolsheim, attributed to the recent Munzingen, has yielded a series of enclosures containing ceramic forms unprecedented in the context of Munzingen B. We have detected the influence of late productions by the Pfyn culture and propose the identification of a new stage in the recent Munzingen, which we have unoriginally named Munzingen C, and is typified by the appearance of ceramic forms with rounded profiles. This episode may date from around 3650-3550 BC, a late dating that has been confirmed by two carbon 14 tests. The discovery allows a strong claim to be made that ancient trading networks that linked the Rhine Valley with the Swiss Plateau and …
Complement C5 but not C3 is expendable for tissue factor activation by cofactor-independent antiphospholipid antibodies
2018
The complement and coagulation cascades interact at multiple levels in thrombosis and inflammatory diseases. In venous thrombosis, complement factor 3 (C3) is crucial for platelet and tissue factor (TF) procoagulant activation dependent on protein disulfide isomerase (PDI). Furthermore, C5 selectively contributes to the exposure of leukocyte procoagulant phosphatidylserine (PS), which is a prerequisite for rapid activation of monocyte TF and fibrin formation in thrombosis. Here, we show that monoclonal cofactor-independent antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) rapidly activate TF on myelomonocytic cells. TF activation is blocked by PDI inhibitor and an anti-TF antibody interfering with PDI bin…
Monte Carlo Simulations of Parallel Charged Platelets as an Approach to Tactoid Formation in Clay
2013
The free energy of interaction between parallel charged platelets with divalent counterions has been calculated using Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the electrostatic effects on aggregation. The platelets are primarily intended to represent clay particles. With divalent counterions, the free energy for two platelets or two tactoids (clusters of parallel platelets) shows a minimum at a short separation due to the attraction caused by ion-ion correlations. In a salt-free system, the free energy of interaction has a long-range repulsive tail beyond the minimum. The repulsion increases for tactoids with larger aggregation numbers, whereas the depth of the free-energy minimum is graduall…
Novel supramolecular affinity materials based on (−)-isosteviol as molecular templates
2013
The readily available ex-chiral-pool building block (−)-isosteviol was combined with the C3-symmetric platforms hexahydroxytriphenylene and hexaaminotriptycene providing large and rigid molecular architectures. Because of the persistent cavities these scaffolds are very potent supramolecular affinity materials for head space analysis by quartz crystal microbalances. The scaffolds serve in particular as templates for tracing air-borne arenes at low concentration. The affinities of the synthesized materials towards different air-borne arenes were determined by 200 MHz quartz crystal microbalances.
New skulls of the basal sauropodomorph Plateosaurus trossingensis from Frick, Switzerland: is there more than one species?
2021
The Triassic basal sauropodomorph Plateosaurus trossingensis is well-known from mass accumulations at the German localities of Trossingen and Halberstadt and the Swiss locality of Frick, and is significant especially regarding its ta-phonomy and proposed developmental plasticity. These implications, however, rely on the assumption that this material derives from a single species, which has been questioned. Here we describe new skull material from Frick including eight complete and six partial skulls, more than doubling the number of known skulls of P. trossingensis. This exceptional sample size allows for gaining a deeper understanding of variability that may occur in a single species. The …
This note concerns the exceptional buckle-plate to the Christ cavalier of the Apocalypse discove…
Rail and Joint Bar (Fish Plate) NDE Advances in North America
2010
Improvement and development of rail track nondestructive inspection (NDI) technologies to reduce in-service failures of rail and joint bars (fish plates) in a continuous effort to make rail transport safer is a primary focus for the railroad industry. Researchers at The Transportation Technology Center, Inc., working under the direction of the Association of American Railroads and its Strategic Research Initiative Program, have worked with companies worldwide to develop novel NDI approaches for dynamic inspection of rail and joint bars. In the area of rail inspection an ultrasonic rail (U-Rail) system for noncontact rail flaw inspection has been developed. This system combines high energy l…
