Force-, EMG-, and elasticity-velocity relationships at submaximal, maximal and supramaximal running speeds in sprinters.

1986

The relationships between ground reaction forces, electromyographic activity (EMG), elasticity and running velocity were investigated at five speeds from submaximal to supramaximal levels in 11 male and 8 female sprinters. Supramaximal running was performed by a towing system. Reaction forces were measured on a force platform. EMGs were recorded telemetrically with surface electrodes from the vastus lateralis and gastrocnemius muscles, and elasticity of the contact leg was evaluated with spring constant values measured by film analysis. Data showed increases in most of the parameters studied with increasing running speed. At supramaximal velocity (10.36 +/- 0.31 m X s-1; 108.4 +/- 3.8%) the…

Postural stability in subjects with whiplash injury symptoms: results of a pilot study

2014

Posturographic tests can be used to assess and confirm the body's imbalance in subjects with whiplash injury. Further studies with larger cohorts are necessary to confirm this pilot study. To verify through a posturographic exam the qualitative and quantitative alterations of postural stability in subjects with previous cervical trauma in comparison with healthy subjects.A total of 42 subjects were analysed for the study; 22 as the control group (NM) and 20 (WM) with a positive anamnesis of whiplash injury from 3 to 12 month from diagnosis through a force platform. Centre of pressure (CoP) movements of the two groups with their eyes open and closed were recorded.During the closed eye test, t…

Biomechanical and skeletal muscle determinants of maximum running speed with aging.

2009

Purpose: Aging diminishes the ability to run fast, but the specific mechanisms responsible for this deterioration remain largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated the age-related decline in sprint running ability through a cross-sectional examination of biomechanical and skeletal muscle characteristics in 77 competitive male sprinters aged 17-82 yr. Methods: Ground reaction force (GRF) and kinematic stride cycle parameters were measured during the maximum-velocity phase using a 9.4-m-long force platform. Knee extensor (KE) and ankle plantar flexor (PF) structural characteristics were investigated using ultrasonography and muscle biopsies (vastus lateralis). Force production cha…

A telemedicine platform to improve clinical parameters in paranoid schizophrenia patients: Results of a one-year randomized study

2018

Objective The study objective was to test a smartphone-based MONEO platform designed to improve the clinical condition of paranoid schizophrenia patients. Telemedicine treatment is considered to be as effective as traditional treatment in outpatient clinics. Method A total of 290 patients with paranoid schizophrenia in the symptomatic remission state were recruited to this 12-month multicenter, open-label randomized trial. A study group (n = 191) received a smartphone with the MONEO platform installed. Patients conducted cognitive training twice a week. Patients' mental state was assessed every month via teleconference. A placebo group (n = 99) received a platform with functionality limited…

Peri‐implant marginal bone loss reduction with platform‐switching components: 5‐Year post‐loading results of an equivalence randomized clinical trial

2019

Abstract Aim To compare the clinical performance and marginal bone levels of implants restored with platform‐switching (PS) or platform‐matching (PM) abutments. Materials and Methods Adult patients missing two or more adjacent teeth in the posterior mandible received 2–4 CAMLOG SCREW‐LINE implants and were randomly allocated to the PM or PS group, receiving the corresponding prosthetic components from surgery onwards. Implants were conventionally loaded with single cemented crowns. Patients were followed annually for 5 years. Outcome measures were marginal bone level changes, implant survival, performance of the prosthetic components and clinical parameters plaque index, sulcus bleeding ind…

Posturographic analysis of balance control in patients with haemophilic arthropathy

2007

Summary.  Musculoskeletal disorders in haemophiliacs represent the highest percentage of lesions, giving rise to haemophilic arthropathy (HA) which predominantly affects lower limbs, influencing postural control, standing and walking. Leading a sedentary lifestyle seems to influence strength and muscular resistance in haemophiliacs which, in turn, are related to articular stability and the prevention of articular degenerative processes. The objective of this work was to study alterations in balance to subsequently evaluate the appropriate therapeutics and how this influences the development of arthropathy. Twenty-five haemophiliacs with HA, 25 haemophiliacs without HA (NHA) and 25 healthy c…

Clinical and radiographic performance of self‐locking conical connection implants in the posterior mandible: Five‐year results of a two‐centre prospe…

2021

Abstract Objective This prospective study aims to assess the 5‐year clinical performance of implants with internal conical connection and platform‐switched abutments in the posterior mandible. Material and Methods Healthy adults missing at least two teeth in the posterior mandible and with a natural tooth mesial to the implant site received two or three adjacent implants. After a transmucosal healing period single crown restorations were cemented on platform‐switched abutments. Changes in marginal bone levels were investigated in standardized periapical radiographs from surgery and loading (baseline) to 60‐months post‐loading. Results Twenty‐four patients received 52 implants. Bone remodell…

Evaluation of the postural stability of elderly persons using time domain signal analysis

2012

A force platform is widely used in the evaluation of postural stability in man. Although an abundance of parameters are typically retrieved from force platform data, no uniform analysis of the data has been carried out. In general, the signal analysis does not analyze the underlying postural event, i.e., whether the signal consists of several small corrections or large excursions. In the present work, we studied the postural stability of 4589 elderly persons from Iceland on a force platform under visual and non-visual conditions during stance on a solid surface. We analyzed the internal relationship between frequently used time domain variables. In addition, we conducted a factor analysis u…

Reliability of genomic variants across different next-generation sequencing platforms and bioinformatic processing pipelines

2021

Abstract Background Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is the fundament of various studies, providing insights into questions from biology and medicine. Nevertheless, integrating data from different experimental backgrounds can introduce strong biases. In order to methodically investigate the magnitude of systematic errors in single nucleotide variant calls, we performed a cross-sectional observational study on a genomic cohort of 99 subjects each sequenced via (i) Illumina HiSeq X, (ii) Illumina HiSeq, and (iii) Complete Genomics and processed with the respective bioinformatic pipeline. We also repeated variant calling for the Illumina cohorts with GATK, which allowed us to investigate the e…

Postural balance and health-related factors in middle-aged and older women with injurious falls and non-fallers.

2004

Background and aims: Older jailers aged over 70 years have shown impaired balance abilities, but it is unclear if impairment in balance control can be detected among jallers who are in their 50’s and 60’s. The aim oj this study was to analyze possible differences in balance control and other health-related factors between female fallers and nonfallers aged 50–68 years. Methods: Women 50–68 years of age (N=40) who had fallen outside and needed medical attention were recruited through a larger fall accident study. Non-fallers (N=97) were women representing the same age group who had not fallen during the preceding 12 months. A battery of standing force platform balance tests were administered…
