Auditory Phenomena and Human Life: Phenomenological Experience

2018

The present study analyzes auditory phenomena from the point of view of hermeneutical phenomenology and shows their interconnectedness with the understanding of man, hearing and listening within the context of human life as the horizon of meaningful sonority and silence. The central questions to be answered in this study are these: What is experienced as sound and sonority? How does a human see himself in inclusion of his being from where he listens, understands, and speaks? The study explores the classical standpoints of Husserl’s phenomenology and other philosophical apprehensions which confirm that auditory phenomena is not to be apprehended solely as an isolated horizon but as being per…

EVE Online is not for everyone : Exceptionalism in online gaming cultures

2019

EVE Online is a space-themed massively multiplayer online game that has developed a reputation for being difficult and unwelcoming to new players. In this article, I explore how an emphasis on exceptionalism is present throughout discussions about EVE by its developer, the enthusiast gaming press, and survey responses of current players (N = 647). Taken together, information from these sources reinforces a public perception that EVE is a game that is of interest only to a very specific kind of player. In turn, these findings add further evidence to the long-argued position of feminist game scholars: Not all gaming communities are open to all players. Rather, who plays, what they play, when …

Designing Touchless Gestural Interfaces for Public Displays

INJURY PREVENTION IN YOUNG SOCCER PLAYERS: RESULTS OF A PILOT STUDY

2012

Risk factors for soccer injuries and prevention have been discussed by several authors, but only few have investigated the effectiveness of preventive interventions, in particular in the last few years. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a prevention program on the incidence of soccer-related injuries in three different categories of younger players (Allievi, Giovanissimi e Primavera). The soccer teams took part in a prevention program to decrease injury risk, for two agonistic seasons (2005-06, 2006-07). Before identifying training programs, we valued the younger fitness status: each youth soccer players (aged 13 to 19) performed exercise tests of functional capaci…

Imagination and Körperzustand: illusion and play in Moses Mendelssohn’s aesthetic reflection

2022

The aesthetic reflection in the eighteenth century is deeply traversed by an experience perceived as capable of disrupting the disciplinary and cognitive system of early modernity: To feel the “own body,” that is, to feel its state of well-being or discomfort means to somehow modify from the inside the anthropological project of the Century of Enlightenment and to create the space and the lexicon of a modality of relationship (play, aesthetic illusion) that redefines the relationship with oneself and the context of construction of a future community. Whereas “Knowledge” and “Will” articulate the same strategy based on the relationship between the spiritual activity of a subject and the semi…

HDR image generation from LDR image with highlight removal

2015

The emergency of High Dynamic Range (HDR) display device impels the study of generating HDR image from Low Dynamic Range (LDR) image. Most existing generation methods apply complicated handing to highlight areas in image, which perplexes the algorithm and introduces the probability of generating artifacts. In this paper, we investigate a separated scheme: instead of sophisticated treatment to the highlight areas during expanding, the processing to the highlight areas is separated from the dynamic range expansion, which facilitates the framework and reduces the artifacts. The image quality metric shows that the separated scheme reveals more details with little artifacts compared to the algor…

Roadmap on 3D integral imaging: Sensing, processing, and display

2020

This Roadmap article on three-dimensional integral imaging provides an overview of some of the research activities in the field of integral imaging. The article discusses various aspects of the field including sensing of 3D scenes, processing of captured information, and 3D display and visualization of information. The paper consists of a series of 15 sections from the experts presenting various aspects of the field on sensing, processing, displays, augmented reality, microscopy, object recognition, and other applications. Each section represents the vision of its author to describe the progress, potential, vision, and challenging issues in this field.

Lightfield recording and reconstruction by integral imaging

2011

Integral imaging is a rising 3D imaging technique that can be considered the incoherent version of holography. In integral imaging the multiperspective information of 3D scenes is stored in a 2D picture. Such picture is nothing but a sampling version of the lightfield emitted by the 3D scene. The recorded lightfield can be used for many purposes. One is the display of 3D color scenes to audiences or much more than one person. Other is the 3D display, with full parallax, in personal monitors, like the screen of a Smartphone, a tablet, or the monitor used by a surgeon in an endoscopic operation. Other important types of applications are connected with the topographic reconstruction, slice by …
