Cloning and expression of a novel component of the CAP superfamily enhanced in the inflammatory response to LPS of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis.
2010
The CAP superfamily is a group of proteins that have been linked to several biological functions such as reproduction, cancer, and immune defense. A differential screening between lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged and naive Ciona intestinalis has been performed to identify LPS-induced genes. This strategy has allowed the isolation of a full-length 1471-bp cDNA encoding for a 413-amino-acid protein (CiCAP). In silico analysis has shown that this polypeptide displays a modular structure with similarities to vertebrate CAP-superfamily proteins and to a collagen-binding adhesin of Streptococcus mutans. Domain organization analysis and alignment of CiCAP to other vertebrate CAP proteins have r…
The PLVC display color characterization model revisited
2008
This work proposes a study of the Piecewise Linear assuming Variation in Chromaticity (PLVC) dis- play color characterization model. This model has not been widely used as the improved accuracy compared with the more common PLCC (Piecewise Linear assuming Chromaticity Constancy) model is not significant for CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) display technology, and it requires more computing power than this model. With today's computers, computational complexity is less of a problem, and today's display technologies show a different colori- metric behavior than CRTs. The main contribution of this work is to generalize the PLVC model to multiprimary displays and to provide extensive experimental results…
Towards Other Worlds, Towards Other Meanings: Screenplays on the Edge of the Plot
2015
The essay concerns cinema's representation in literature, focusing on novels about never realized screenplays, especially on those by Alba de Cespedes and Saul Bellow
A decade of research into player communities in online games
2013
The social dynamics of player communities in online games have been the subject of much research during the last decade. Following a systematic review of empirical research publications from 2000–2010, this article synthesizes the key methods and concepts researchers have used to study and characterize player communities. It also synthesizes the key aspects and operationalizations researchers have concentrated on. The analysis shows that qualitative approaches have been more common than quantitative ones. The concepts used to characterize player communities were often not clearly defined or overlapped in meaning. Yet they revealed a prevalence of micro (groups or teams), meso (guilds or org…
The emblem tradition in Shakespeare’s plays: mirror-effects and anamorphoses
2017
ABSTRACT: An emblem is a witty combination of various texts and one image which delivers a moral message. The emblem is an art of the gaze, the purpose of which is to lead the eye to the transcendent ideas lying behind the veil of worldly appearances. Shakespeare was obviously sensitive to the visual potential of emblems. This paper aims to show that Shakespeare drew upon the modus operandi of emblems but rejected the emblem as a fixed ideological discourse. Shakespeare used the emblem in an anamorphic way to confront the spectator with the shifting world he lives in. KEYWORDS: emblems; theater; Shakespeare.
A Quantitative Analysis of the Romanian Translations of Shakespeare’s Bawdy Puns
2020
This article proposes a quantitative analysis of the Romanian translations of 325 ribald Shakespearean puns, which originate in 20 plays and 71 renditions, with special focus on assessing the impact of translator-subjective and objective factors on the rendition process in the pre-communist, communist, and post-communist periods. The findings invalidate several widespread beliefs: Dragoș Protopopescu’s renditions, banned by the communist regime for their ‘modernizing’ approach to the Shakespearean text, bowdlerized more bawdy puns than ‘ESPLA’, which replaced it as the Party-approved Romanian edition of the dramatist’s plays; Adolphe Stern’s translations, harshly criticized in his period, f…
Histocompatibility reaction in tissue and cells of the marine sponge Suberites domuncula in vitro and in vivo: central role of the allograft inflamma…
2001
Sponges (Porifera) are the phylogenetically oldest still extant metazoan phylum. Recently elements of their immune system have been cloned and analyzed, primarily from the demosponges Suberites domuncula and Geodia cydonium. By differential display, two genes were identified in S. domuncula, whose translation products are involved in graft rejection/fusion: the allograft inflammatory factor (AIF-1) and the Tcf-like transcription factor (TCF). Since the AIF-1 and TCF genes are upregulated in vivo after tissue transplantation, especially in allografts, we investigated whether this reaction can be monitored in vitro. Therefore, the autogeneic and the allogeneic mixed sponge cell reaction (MSCR…
2014
Masteroppgave i psykisk helsearbeid ME504 Universitetet i Agder 2014 The aim of this paper is to bring forth knowledge about children and young people's statements about how it is to be a participant in family therapy. To work out and produce this knowledge a literature review has been used as method. An extensive search was conducted in different databases. It turned out to be little research in this field of research. The articles this study is based on are all English, and concerns children and young people's statements about their experience of being participants in family therapy. There are a total of 7 articles included in this study, with participants from 5 to 22 years. The findings…
