A Viscoelastic Model for the Long-Term Deflection of Segmental Prestressed Box Girders

Most of segmental prestressed concrete box girders exhibit excessive multidecade deflections unforeseeable by past and current design codes. To investigate such a behavior, mainly caused by creep and shrinkage phenomena, an effective finite element (FE) formulation is presented in this article. This formulation is developed by invoking the stationarity of an energetic principle for linear viscoelastic problems and relies on the Bazant creep constitutive law. A new method for creating sparse design velocity fields

We present a novel method for the computation of mesh node sensitivities with respect to the boundary node movement. The sensitivity field is sparse in a sense that movement of each boundary node affects only given amount of inner mesh nodes, which can result in considerable savings in the storage space. The method needs minimal control from the user, and it does not place any restrictions (such as block structure) on the mesh. Use of the method is demonstrated with a shape optimization problem using CAD-free parametrization. Serum sIL-2-R levels were measured in 28 sarcoidosis patients at multiple time points before, during, and after therapy, with a mean follow-up time of 10.2 +/- 5.2 months, and the results compared with the clinical activity of the disease. Before therapy, 20 out of 24 episodes with active disease exhibited elevated levels of sIL-2-R (918 +/- 362 U/ml). In inactive disease after tapering off corticoid therapy the sIL-2-R levels were 453 +/- 274 U/ml. Disease activity under therapy also correlated with sIL-2-R serum levels. 23 out of 29 episodes with signs of activity under therapy had elevated sIL-2-R levels (808 +/- 409 U/ml). Abstract Belt drives work often with short center distances and very different wrap arcs so that high adherence characteristics are required at the belt-pulley contact. In addition, the belt flexural stiffness reduces the contact width, but this decrease may be compensated in part by the belt softening due to the shear compliance.

The Impact of Internet and Social Media Use on Well-Being

The present research examines the longitudinal average impact of frequency of use of Internet and social networking sites (SNS) on subjective well-being of adolescents in Germany. Based on five-wave panel data that cover a period of nine years, we disentangle between-person and within-person effects of media use on depressive symptomatology and life satisfaction as indicators of subjective well-being. Additionally, we control for confounders such as TV use, self-esteem, and satisfaction with friends.
