The action of pericope that describes the anointing of Jesus (Matt. 26:6–13) took place in Bethany, in Judea. These areas were then part of the Great Roman Empire. Christ foretold that the woman who poured out the precious oil on His head in the house of Simon the Leper would know the whole world. That is what exactly happened. Many Christians do not know much about history of the Roman Empire, but probably everyone has heard of a nameless woman who anointed Jesus shortly before His passion and death. The faith in C hrisfs resurrection had a great impact on the funeral rites of the early Church. For his followers, the day o f death was not considered as the end o f everything but, indeed, it was regarded the day of birth for heaven. The spirit of hope for etemal life characterized the Funeral Rites o f the first Christian communities. Also the Second Vatican Council has ordered to arrange the Rites in such a way that they would express more clearly the Paschal character of death of the contemporary Christians. The article is a contribution to the biography of the Catholic clergyman, parish priest in the parish of Łubniany located in Upper Silesia – the Rev. Franciszek Pogrzeba. He was one of the fourteen priests who signed the so-called “Appeal to Priests”, in compliance with which they broke off their cooperation with the Catholic German Center Party (Deutsche Zentrumspartei) and supported the Deputies of the “Polish Circle” in the German Parliament. After World War 1, the Rev. Pogrzeba actively engaged for incorporation of Upper Silesia into Poland.
