GEOMATIC METHODOLOGIES FOR THE STUDY OF TEATRO MASSIMO IN PALERMO (ITALY)

2017

Abstract. This work illustrates the use of geomatics techniques for the documentation of Teatro Massimo in Palermo (Italy), one of the most important and big in Italy and in Europe. The theatre is characterized by a very complex structure and is realized also using innovative solution, studied at the time of the project specifically for this building; for example, an original system was realized for a natural air-conditioning system of the auditorium. Due to his complexity, the documentation of the Teatro Massimo requires studying specific survey solutions for the different parts of the building. In this paper, some studies on two of the most representative parts of the building were descri…

CHIMERA: A BIM+GIS SYSTEM FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE

2020

Abstract. In the last years, many researches are conducted on systems for Cultural Heritage, trying to adapt BIM systems to CH needs; furthermore, the interest around the integration of BIM systems and GIS systems spreads. Chimera, presented in this paper, is the final product of about 8 years of research on this broad topic and has been specifically conceived for the realm of CH. It joins the small group of ready-to work information systems that allow the concurrently use of different integrated data, as 3D models, point clouds but also 2D maps or images. It also presents different functionalities that allow to work at a multiscale approach, including switching from a “single object level”…

TERRESTRIAL LASER SCANNING FOR COASTAL GEOMORPHOLOGIC RESEARCH IN WESTERN GREECE

2012

We used terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for (i) accurate volume estimations of dislocated boulders moved by high-energy impacts and for (ii) monitoring of annual coastal changes. In this contribution, we present three selected sites in Western Greece that were surveyed during a time span of four years (2008-2011). The Riegl LMS-Z420i laser scanner was used in combination with a precise DGPS system (Topcon HiPer Pro). Each scan position and a further target were recorded for georeferencing and merging of the point clouds. For the annual detection of changes, reference points for the base station of the DGPS system were marked. Our studies show that TLS is capable to accurately estimate volu…

3D RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ROMAN DOMUS IN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF LYLIBAEUM (MARSALA, ITALY)

2019

Abstract. Generally, terrestrial laser scanning surveys involve a rather large number of scans to ensure a high percentage of overlap required for the scan registration phase (target-based or point-based registration, cloud-to-cloud registration). These approaches result in data redundancy that could slow down both the acquisition and post-processing phases. In recent years, the technological evolution in the field of laser scanners has been directed to the development of devices that are able to perform an onsite pre-registration, to optimize the survey procedures and the reliability of the registration of the scan. The paper presents the results achieved during a terrestrial laser scannin…

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAMMETRY, TLS SURVEY and 3D MODELLING for VR and AR APPLICATIONS in CH

2020

Abstract. The world of valorization of Cultural Heritage is even more focused on the virtual representation and reconstructions of digital 3D models of monuments and archaeological sites. In this scenario the quality and the performances offered by the virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) navigation take primary importance, improving the accessibility of cultural sites where the real access is not allowed for natural conditions or human possibilities. The creation of a virtual environment useful for these purposes requires a specific workflow to follow, combining different strategies in the fields of survey, 3D modelling and virtual navigation. In this work a specific case of stu…

Autonomous hyperspectral UAS photogrammetry for environmental monitoring applications

2014

Abstract. The unmanned airborne system (UAS) remote sensing using lightweight multi- and hyperspectral imaging sensors offer new possibilities for the environmental monitoring applications. Based on the accurate measurements of the way in which the object reflect and emit energy, wide range of affecting variables can be monitored. Condition for reliable applications is reliable and accurate input data. In many applications, installation of geometric and radiometric reference targets in the object area is challenging, for instance, in forest or water areas. On the other hand, UASs are often operated in very poor conditions, under clouds or under variable cloud cover. Our objective is to deve…

Tree species recognition in species rich area using UAV-borne hyperspectral imagery and stereo-photogrammetric point cloud

2017

Abstract. Recognition of tree species and geospatial information of tree species composition is essential for forest management. In this study we test tree species recognition using hyperspectral imagery from VNIR and SWIR camera sensors in combination with 3D photogrammetric canopy surface model based on RGB camera stereo-imagery. An arboretum forest with a high number of tree species was used as a test area. The imagery was acquired from the test area using UAV-borne cameras. Hyperspectral imagery was calibrated for providing a radiometrically corrected reflectance mosaic, which was tested along with the original uncalibrated imagery. Alternative estimators were tested for predicting tree…

From part to point cloud, the modelling of a 3D part

2019

The present paper focuses on the development of the composite materials in the automotiv industry by making a comparative analysis between a 3D model of the part and a real part made by a composite material, measuring the part using the point cloud. The aim is to obtain a high modeling and a more clear visualization of the composite material part.

Collision Avoidance with Potential Fields Based on Parallel Processing of 3D-Point Cloud Data on the GPU

2014

In this paper we present an experimental study on real-time collision avoidance with potential fields that are based on 3D point cloud data and processed on the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). The virtual forces from the potential fields serve two purposes. First, they are used for changing the reference trajectory. Second they are projected to and applied on torque control level for generating according nullspace behavior together with a Cartesian impedance main control loop. The GPU algorithm creates a map representation that is quickly accessible. In addition, outliers and the robot structure are efficiently removed from the data, and the resolution of the representation can be easily ad…
