DNA strand breaks induced by nuclear hijacking of neuronal NOS as an anti-cancer effect of 2-methoxyestradiol
2015
2-Methoxyestradiol (2-ME) is a physiological metabolite of 17β-estradiol. At pharmacological concentrations, 2-ME inhibits colon, breast and lung cancer in tumor models. Here we investigated the effect of physiologically relevant concentrations of 2-ME in osteosarcoma cell model. We demonstrated that 2-ME increased nuclear localization of neuronal nitric oxide synthase, resulting in nitro-oxidative DNA damage. This in turn caused cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in osteosarcoma cells. We suggest that 2-ME is a naturally occurring hormone with potential anti-cancer properties.
Los infractores de tráfico persistentes: el consumo de alcohol y la personalidad como predictores de la retirada del permiso de conducir
2020
ABSTRACT Traffic safety is an important social problem. Many accidents are due to non-compliance with traffic regulations. Serious or repeated offenses are sanctioned with penalty points or court conviction, and sanctions can lead to disqualification from driving. This paper explores the relevance of alcohol consumption and personality factors as predictors of driving disqualification. The aim of the study is to determine whether the behaviors of persistent offenders and their propensity for law-breaking are related to their characteristics and patterns of drinking. A sample of 358 drivers participated in the study: 126 non-offender habitual drivers and 232 persistent traffic offenders disq…

Bader's analysis of the electron density in the Pbca enstatite - Pbcn protoenstatite phase transition
2011
The Bader’s topological analysis of the electron density obtained via ab initio quantum mechanical simulation at Hartree–Fock and DFT level has been performed for experimentally in situ heated structures of enstatite–protoenstatite MgSiO 3 . The measurements have been performed in the temperature range 1200–1400 K. The work was aimed at characterizing both the evolution of the electron arrangement in the crystal and that of the crystal-structure at the enstatite–protoenstatite phase transition in terms of topology of the electron density, with particular care about the Mg–O and the O–O bonds. The observed breaking of some chemical bonds with increasing temperature and/or due to the phase tr…
Multiplicity of positive solutions for a degenerate nonlocal problem with p-Laplacian
2021
Abstract We consider a nonlinear boundary value problem with degenerate nonlocal term depending on the L q -norm of the solution and the p-Laplace operator. We prove the multiplicity of positive solutions for the problem, where the number of solutions doubles the number of “positive bumps” of the degenerate term. The solutions are also ordered according to their L q -norms.
Entanglement and heat capacity in a two-atom Bose–Hubbard model
2012
Abstract We show that a two-atom Bose–Hubbard model exhibits three different phases in the behavior of thermal entanglement in its parameter space. These phases are demonstrated to be traceable back to the existence of level crossings in the ground state of the same system. Significant similarities between the behaviors of thermal entanglement and heat capacity in the parameter space are brought to light thus allowing to interpret the occurrence and the meaning of all these three phases.
Unsupervised recognition of retinal vascular junction points.
2014
Landmark points in retinal images can be used to create a graph representation to understand and to diagnose not only different pathologies of the eye, but also a variety of more general diseases. Aim of this paper is the description of a non-supervised methodology to distinguish between bifurcations and crossings of the retinal vessels, which can be used in differentiating between arteries and veins. A thinned representation of the binarized image, is used to identify pixels with three or more neighbors. Junction points are classified into bifurcations or crossovers according to their geometrical and topological properties. The proposed approach is successfully compared with the state-of-t…
Stem cells, cancer stem-like cells, and natural products.
2012
Somatic stem cells can be found in many rapidly regenerating tissues, e.g., the skin, gastrointestinal mucosa, and hematopoietic system, but are also present at low numbers in non-regenerative organs such as the heart and brain. In these organs, somatic stem cells aid in normal tissue homeostasis and repair after injury as well as self-renewal and the generation of specific progenitor cells during differentiation. Cancer stem-like cells are a small subpopulation of self-renewing cells that are able to proliferate upon appropriate stimulation and differentiate into heterogeneous lineages in tumors. Modulation of the behavior of normal tissue stem cells and cancer stem-like cells is an emergi…
