Some European green roof norms and guidelines through the lens of biodiversity : do ecoregions and plant traits also matter?
2018
Abstract Green infrastructure and in particular green roofs are crucial to meet the challenge of sustainable urbanisation fostered by the current European Research and Innovation agenda. Several documents were issued in the last decades in Europe for regulating the design, construction and up-keep of roof greening. In particular, the actual German guidelines have been widely adopted as a reference basis for green roof design and regulation worldwide, because of its exhaustiveness and proven building- and landscaping tradition. With the aim to assess the effectiveness of green roof guidelines and norms in supporting plant and soil biodiversity in different ecoregions, and particularly of the…
Égalité des chances à l'école et politiques éducatives d'inclusion en Afrique sub Saharienne : de la rhétorique à la réalité pratique
2011
This paper provides an analysis of the relationship between educational policies of inclusion in Sub-Saharan Africa and school achievement in relation to learners with disabilities. The principle of equal opportunity at school requires the definition of a common framework and the establishment of systems to provide different responses to the difficulties and disadvantages of any kind. Inclusive education is presented as a form of education that could take into account the diverse needs of all learners. We present its different theoretical mechanisms and the limits of its effective implementation in the context of sub Saharan Africa. The results show that despite the existence of a national …
Can Migration Decisions Be Affected by Income Policy Interventions? Evidence from Finland
2007
Haapanen M. and Ritsila J. (2007) Can migration decisions be affected by income policy interventions? Evidence from Finland, Regional Studies 41, 339–348. Using Finnish micro-level data, this paper maps out whether migration decisions can be affected by income policy interventions. The analysis focuses on individuals living in peripheral regions and distinguishes peripheral migration from growth-centre migration. In support of the human capital hypothesis, the estimation results imply that migration decisions can be affected by income policy interventions. For example, an intervention that would increase an individual's expected disposable income by 10%, given that he/she does not move to a…
Social Housing in Europe
2017
The debate about the future of social housing in Europe is currently more lively compared to earlier years. The housing demand in general and social housing in particular are intense. They are increasingly worrying the concentration of most of the social housing in the most disadvantaged areas and the low economic levels of tenants living in these apartments. This contribute explores the state of fact of social and urban policies in some European countries, in order to offer an exhaustive framework of the variegated situation.
Near zero energy islands in the Mediterranean: Supporting policies and local obstacles
2014
Abstract Based on a recent technical–economical analysis on the island of Pantelleria, a policy feasibility study for a complete upgrading of the energy system of this Mediterranean Island is carried out. Pantelleria, situated between Sicily and Africa, owns a large potential in terms of renewable energy resources, although there are some obstacles in turning it into a Near Zero Energy system. Starting from a deep energy system audit, the study proposes the project for a near zero energy island, through the efficient transformation of the different existing natural energy resources into electrical energy and heat: the solar, the wind-based and the geothermal systems. In this way, the island…

The network of global corporate control.
2011
The structure of the control network of transnational corporations affects global market competition and financial stability. So far, only small national samples were studied and there was no appropriate methodology to assess control globally. We present the first investigation of the architecture of the international ownership network, along with the computation of the control held by each global player. We find that transnational corporations form a giant bow-tie structure and that a large portion of control flows to a small tightly-knit core of financial institutions. This core can be seen as an economic “super-entity” that raises new important issues both for researchers and policy make…
Land consolidation policies in sicily and their effects on its farmland
2014
The paper deals with the legislative interventions in the field of land consolidation and their effects in improving the Sicilian land property structure. After a preliminary analysis of the legislative framework at national and regional level, a study on the structural evolution of the farming system in Italy and Sicily during the 1961-2010 period was carried out. In order to appreciate the actual impact and the relative efficacy of such interventions, data concerning the actions for land reorganization provided for by the Measure 4.11 contained in the 2000-2006 ROP for Sicily were analysed. On the basis of the data provided by the Regional Board for Agricultural and Food Resources, it has…
Un ponte ancora aperto? Alcune note sull’emigrazione siciliana verso gli Stati Uniti durante il fascismo
2018
During the 1920s, after the promulgation by US government of the Quota Acts, and after the new fascist policies about emigration in Italy (1926), we register a dramatic decrease of the transatlantic migration flows from Italy to the US. Focusing on the case of Sicily, one of the region which had sent more emigrants to the US during the Great Migration, this essay analyses the issue of migratory waves from Southern Italy to the US during the Fascism. In fact, despite of the reshaping of migration policies, some traditional networks between Sicily and America are still working. For example, some new researches about transnational Mafia reveal the existence of dynamic Sicilian-American network…
Gender segregation in Vocational Training (VT). Findings and Proposals from a Participatory Process of Designing Youth Public Policies in Ontinyent, …
2020
