Development and validation of a procedure for estimating the hydrophobicity of structurally unrelated compounds by micellar liquid chromatography

1999

Reversed-phase liquid chromatography has been used most often to estimate values of log P, but despite years of study, there is no universally accepted method of performing these estimations. The main problem has to do with the fact that the hydrophobic parameter, log k w , depends on the hydrogen bond acceptor-donor character of the compounds. The use of micellar mobile phases to perform these estimations is evaluated here, and the influence of the nature of the surfactant (anionic, cationic, and nonionic) on the log k-log P relationships is studied. The use of a nonionic surfactant, such as Brij35, to prepare the mobile phases provided adequate results regardeless of the hydrogen bond acc…

Beads of Acryloylated Polyaminoacidic Matrices Containing 5-Fluorouracil for Drug Delivery

2002

Spherical polymeric microparticles have been prepared by a reverse phase suspension polymerization technique. The starting polymer was alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA), partially derivatized with glycidylmethacrylate (GMA). PHEA-GMA copolymer (PHG) was crosslinked in the presence of N,N'-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) or N,N'-ethylenebisacrylamide (EBA). 5-fluorouracil was incorporated into PHG-DMAA or PHG-EBA beads both during and after the crosslinking process. Swelling studies revealed a high affinity toward aqueous medium, influenced by the presence of 5-fluorouracil. The in vitro release study showed that the release rate depends on the chemical structure of the beads…

Synthesis and studies of calcium channel blocking and antioxidant activities of novel 4-pyridinium and/or N-propargyl substituted 1,4-dihydropyridine…

2014

The novel 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives containing the cationic pyridine moiety at the position 4, and the N-propargyl group as a substituent at position 1 of the 1,4-DHP cycle were designed, synthesised, and assessed in biological tests. Among all the novel compounds, the 4-(N-dodecyl) pyridinium group-containing compounds 11 (without the N-propargyl group) and 12 (with the N-propargyl group) demonstrated the highest calcium antagonistic properties against neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y (IC50 about 5–14 mM) and the vascular smooth muscle A7r5 cell (IC50 – 0.6–0.7 mM) lines, indicating that they predominantly target the L-type calcium channels. These compounds showed a slight total antioxidant act…

Partitioning of macrocyclic compounds in a cationic and an anionic micellar solution: a small-angle neutron scattering study.

2004

Following a previous investigation on partitioning of some macrocycle compounds in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) aqueous solutions and their effect on the micellar structure, a small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study has been performed at fixed surfactant content (0.20 mol/L) and varying macrocycle concentrations from 0.20 up to 1.0 mol/L. Conductivity measurements have been also performed in order to evaluate the effect of the presence of macrocycles on the critical micellar concentration (cmc) of the two surfactants. SANS experimental data were fitted successfully by means of a core-plus-shell monodisperse prolate ellipsoid model. It has been…

Measurement of interactions between polysaccharides and flavour compounds by exclusion size chromatography: Advantages and limits

1998

Interactions between flavour compounds and polysaccharides have been studied by exclusion size chromatography, the Hummel and Dreyer method. Hydrogen bonding was found between 2-acetyl thiazole and dextrines of different degrees of polymerisation. The number of binding sites and the affinity constant increase by increasing the degree of polymerisation. Hydrogen bonding was also responsible for the interactions between xanthane and 1-octen-3-ol or 2-acetyl pyrazine, with 1 mole of 1-octen-3-ol bound per pentasaccharide repeating unit. Unfortunately, the number of flavour compounds, which can be studied with this method, is limited due to their low water solubility and their low UV absorption.

The use of utraviolet-visible spectrophotometry in the determination of average properties of nonylphenol ethylene oxide condensates

1983

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry is usd in the determination of average molecular weight (M), average degree of polymerization (X), the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) and ethylene oxide percentage of nonylphenol ethylene oxide condensates. The method is based on determination of the absorptivity a, expressed in g lt-1 cm−1, from the absorbances measured at 275 nm for a series of dilutions of an aqeuous ethanolic solution (60:40, v/v/) of a given product, followed by numerical interpolation of this value in the expression a = f(HLB), log a = f(log M), and log a = f(log X). These expressions are obtained from reference samples or samples previously analyzed. The proposed method gives relat…

Synthesis of Water-Soluble Copolymers Carrying Long-Chain (C12 to C30 ) Aliphatic Moieties

2011

Water-soluble copolymers from mono-1-alkyl itaconates and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone are synthesized and characterized. Themono-1-alkyl itaconates are prepared from itaconic anhydride and the related alcohol: 1-dodecanol, 1-octadecanol, 1-docosanol, and 1-triacontanol. The mono-1-triacontyl itaconate is synthesized fromplant growth regulator policosanols extracted from Agave fourcrouydes, where 1-triacontanol is the major product. The reactivity ratios, calculated according to the Mao-Huglin method for copolymerizations conducted to medium-high conversions, indicate a tendency toward alternation for all copolymerization reactions. Water solubility of copolymers is provided as a function of copol…

Reduced protein adsorption on plastics via direct plasma deposition of triethylene glycol monoallyl ether

1997

The direct plasma-induced deposition of tri(ethylene glycol) monoallyl ether is reported. RF plasma polymerization of this monomer was carried out under both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed plasma operation. The major focus of this work was optimization of the degree of retention of the C-O-C bonds of the starting monomer during the deposition process. This successfully was accomplished using low RF power during the CW runs and low RF duty cycles during the pulsed plasma experiments. Spectroscopic analysis of the plasma films revealed a strong dependence of film composition on the RF power and duty cycles employed. In particular, an unusually high level of film chemistry compositional contr…
