A spectrophotometric flow procedure for the determination of cationic surfactants in natural waters using a solenoid micro-pump for fluid propulsion
2006
An automatic flow-analysis procedure for spectrophotometric determination of cationic surfactants in surface water using a solenoid micro-pump for propelling solutions of reagents and sample is des...
Histamine, an effective initiator for the synthesis of polysulfides
2020
The synthesis of polysulfides from thioepoxides traditionally makes use of toxic organometallic initiators. We demonstrate the use of histamine as an efficient initiator. The polymerization can be carried out under solvent-free and metal-free conditions at mild temperature to obtain high-quality polysulfides. A synergistic acid and base catalysis mechanism is proposed. The results enable a safer and cleaner production of next-generation polymers.
A fluorescent molecular sensor for pH windows in traditional and polymeric biocompatible micelles: comicellization of anionic species to shift and re…
2011
A new approach is presented to obtain fluorescent sensors for pH windows that work in water and under biomimetic conditions. A single molecule that features all-covalently linked components is used, thus making it capable of working as a fluorescent sensor with an OFF/ON/OFF response to pH value. The components are a tertiary amine, a pyridine, and a fluorophore (pyrene). The forms with both protonated bases or both neutral bases quench the pyrene fluorescence, whereas the form with the neutral pyridine and protonated amine groups is fluorescent. The molecular sensor is also equipped with a long alkyl chain to make it highly hydrophobic in all its protonated and unprotonated forms, that is,…
Ceria/polymer nanocontainers for high-performance encapsulation of fluorophores
2019
We report the synthesis of high-performance organic–inorganic hybrid fluorescent nanocapsules comprising a polymer shell armored with an inorganic layer and a liquid core containing a fluorophore. The polymeric capsules are synthesized by free radical miniemulsion polymerization and contain covalently bound carboxylate surface functionalities that allow for the binding of metal ions through electrostatic interaction. A cerium(IV) oxide nanoparticle layer, formed in situ at the surface of the hybrid nanocapsules, acts as oxygen scavenger and keeps external reactive molecular oxygen from entering into the capsules, eventually resulting in a reduction of the photooxidation of encapsulated fluo…
Of Thiols and Disulfides: Methods for Chemoselective Formation of Asymmetric Disulfides in Synthetic Peptides and Polymers.
2018
In protein or peptide chemistry, thiols are frequently chosen as a chemical entity for chemoselective modification reactions. Although it is a well-established methodology to address cysteines and homocysteines in aqueous media to form S-C bonds, possibilities for the chemoselective formation of asymmetric disulfides have been less approached. Focusing on bioreversibility in conjugation chemistry, the formation of disulfide bonds is highly desirable for the attachment of thiol-containing bioactive agents to proteins or in cross-linking reactions, because disulfide bonds can combine stability in blood with degradability inside cells. In this Concept article, recent approaches in the field of…
Influence of a density mismatch on TMPTMA shells nonconcentricity
2011
Some laser target designs require low-density organic foam shells to study fusion on the French high-power laser laser mega joule. Low-density trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate foam shells composed of C, H, and O, 2 mm diameter, 100-μm wall thickness, and 250 mg cm−3 density are synthesized by a microencapsulation technique using a droplet generator. These shells have to reach a sphericity higher than 99.9% and a nonconcentricity (NC) lower than 1%. The wall thickness variation is one of the most difficult specifications to meet. An important factor in reducing this defect is the density matching between the three phases of the emulsion at polymerization temperature. The influence of a den…
MRI-Visible Poly(ε-caprolactone) with Controlled Contrast Agent Ratios for Enhanced Visualization in Temporary Imaging Applications
2013
International audience; Hydrophobic macromolecular contrast agents (MMCAs) are highly desirable to provide safe and efficient magnetic resonance (MR) visibility to implantable medical devices. In this study, we report on the synthesis and evaluation of novel biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone)-based MMCAs. Poly(α-propargyl-ε-caprolactone-co-ε-caprolactone)s containing 2, 5, and 10 mol % of propargyl groups have been prepared by ring-opening copolymerization of ε-caprolactone and the corresponding propargylated lactone. In parallel, a diazido derivative of the clinically used diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)/Gd3+ complex has been synthesized. Finally, MRI-visible poly(ε-caprolactone)…
Novel polyaminoacidic copolymers as nonviral gene vectors
2000
Human gene therapy is one of the most promising methods developed in recent years, providing great potential for the treatment of a variety of diseases. Complexes formed between DNA and cationic polymers are attracting increasing attention as novel synthetic vectors for the delivery of genes. We have synthesized polycations with quaternary ammonium groups in their side chains for self-assembly with calf thymus DNA. This paper describes the functionalization of α,β-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy), a synthetic macromolecule having many potential applications in the field of biomedical sciences, with glycidyltrimethylammonuim chloride (GTA) in order to introduce positive charges into their chains. …
