A Polyphasic Approach to Study the Intraspecif ic Diversity Amongst Vibrio vulnificus Isolates

Summary A polyphasic taxonomic approach using phenotypic and molecular genetic techniques, was carried out on the species Vibrio vulnificus in order to study its intraspecific diversity. Seven techniques, including phenotypic (API 20E, BIOLOG, total protein profiles, serotyping, ELISA), and genotypic methods (ribotyping and AFLP), were employed on 80 V. vulnificus strains of biotypes 1 and 2, including 9 reference cultures. The isolates came from different geographic origins (USA, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Japan, Thailand) and types of samples (clinical, health/diseased fish, seafood, water). Hp, Gc, Cp, Tf, Bg and Pi phenotypes in leprosy patients and healthy controls from West Bengal (India)

On a sample of n=601 leprous individuals and n=386 healthy controls from West Bengal (India) the question is discussed, if there are existing any associations between leprosy and several serum protein groups like haptoglobin, Gc, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, β2 I and Pi. No associations were found concerning the haptoglobins and transferrins. Certain associations came out respecting ceruloplasmin, β2 I and Pi phenotypes. However, these associations, which were found in connection with the different types and clinical courses of leprosy, should be reexamined by further research. Olive (Olea europaea L.) is an ancient crop which spread from the Middle East towards the westem Mediterranean region. In addition lo its agronomical and economical importance, the olive industry has a great social and cultural interest as part of our heritage. In order to characterize and to study the genetic relationship among cultivars, five polymorphic microsatellite loci were used in this study and were generated a total of 56 polymorphic alleles with an average of 11 alleles by locus. The “Rossa Siciliana” is an autochthonous small Sicilian dairy cattle population, accounting for 5-7,000 individuals.This breed is characterized by high ability to live on poor pasture lands, moderate milk production, and traditionally linked to cheese production. Aim of this work was to investigate milk protein polymorphisms in this population. A total of 62 individual milk samples were collected from 19 extensive farms spread in the “Parco dei Nebrodi” area (Messina). The aim of this work was to analyze the genetic diversity and the phylogenetic relationships among the Valle del Belice (VDB) breed and the other sheep breeds considered as ancestors, using -lactoglobulin (BLG) promoter region polymorphisms. The BLG promoter region of 50 randomly chosen animals from the four breeds (VDB n=20; Comisana (COM) n=10; Pinzirita (PIN) n=10; Sarda (SAR) n=10) were sequenced and aligned, and results showed the presence of 36 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and one deletion.
