Water-Blown Polyisocyanurate Foams From Vegetable Oil Polyols

2008

Polyols with the hydroxyl value OHV from 290 to 318 mg KOH/g are synthesized from rapeseed, sunflower seed, flaxseed, or coconut oils by the way of their: (1) transesterification with triethanolamine or (2) amidization with diethanolamine. The influence of water as the blowing agent on the storage stability of the polyol premix system is assessed from values of the polyol premix system pH, acid value, and variations in such parameters as cream and gel time. Water-blown polyisocyanurate (PIR) foams (150 · II × 300; II—isocyanate index) characterized by good mechanical characteristics, dimensional stability at 70°C and at relative humidity RH = 95% as well as by a very low water absorbance, …

The Effect of Montmorillonite Type Nanoparticles on Stiffness and Flammability of Rapeseed Oil Based Polyisocyanurate Foams

2013

Polyisocyanurate foams incorporating polyols derived from rapeseed oil are developed, with the polyol system comprising up to 80% of rapeseed oil esters. To enhance the mechanical characteristics and fire resistance of the foams, they are filled with three different types of organically modified clay (organoclay) in the range of loading from 1 to 5% by weight. Marked increase in tensile stiffness of nanocomposite foams is observed.

Stability in physiological saline of intravenous busulfan in a polyolefin pack

2008

Abstract Introduction Although it has been used orally, the variability in its absorption and the risk of causing vomiting has lead to a push towards the intravenous use of busulfan. This study looks at the stability of 60 mg of busulfan, in fixed volumes of 250 mL (0.24 mg/mL) and 500 mL (0.12 mg/mL) of physiological saline and different conservation conditions, in a new plastic pack made from polyolefin/polyamide laminates. Material and methods High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection was used to determine the concentration of busulfan derivate with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate trihydrate. Stability was assessed for both concentrations; refrigerated and at room t…

On the mechanism of compatibilization of polyolefin/liquid crystalline polymer blends with graft copolymers

2000

The compatibilization mechanism of some compatibilizers for blends of polyolefins with a liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) was studied. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) were blended with a semirigid LCP (SBH) in a batch mixer, either with and without compatibilizers. The latter were two commercially available samples of functionalized polyolefins, that is, a PE-g-MA (HDM) and a PP-g-AA (Polybond 1001) copolymer and some purposely synthesized PE-g-LCP and PP-g-LCP copolymers. Microtomed films of the binary and the ternary blends were annealed at 240 degrees C on the hot stage of a polarizing microscope and the changes undergone by their morphology were recorded as a function of time. …

Application of Silsesquioxanes in the Preparation of Polyolefin-Based Materials

2023

This paper is a review of studies on the use of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) of various structures in the synthesis of polyolefins and the modification of their properties, namely: (1) components of organometallic catalytic systems for the polymerization of olefins, (2) comonomers in the copolymerization with ethylene, and (3) fillers in composites based on polyolefins. In addition, studies on the use of new silicon compounds, i.e., siloxane–silsesquioxane resins, as fillers for composites based on polyolefins are presented. The authors dedicate this paper to Professor Bogdan Marciniec on the occasion of his jubilee.

Progress in Understanding of the Interactions between Functionalized Polyolefins and Organo-Layered Double Hydroxides

2014

The dispersion of organo-layered double hydroxides (O-LDH) in functionalized polyolefins (POs) is investigated. Two different polyethylene matrices (maleic anhydride (MAH) and diethyl maleate functionalized) are tested and a hydrogenated fatty acid modified LDH is used. The attention is focused on evidencing the interaction between the functional groups of the polymer and the O-LDH through FT-IR. Moreover, a combination of solvent fractionation, morphological, and rheological characterizations enables to gain a deeper insight into the structure of these composites. In particular, the formation of bridging bonds between the particles and MAH functionalized macromolecules is assumed, possibly…

Pro-Degradant Activity of Naturally Occurring Compounds on Polyethylene in Accelerate Weathering Conditions

2019

In this work, naturally occurring compounds, such as Vitamin E (VE) and Ferulic Acid (FA), at high concentrations, have been considered as pro-degradant agents for Low Density Polyethylene (PE). However, all obtained results using the naturally occurring molecules as pro-oxidant agents for PE have been compared with the results achieved using a classical pro-oxidant agent, such as calcium stearate (Ca stearate) and with neat PE. The preliminary characterization, through rheological, mechanical and thermal analysis, of the PE-based systems highlights that the used naturally occurring molecules are able to exert a slight plasticizing action on PE and subsequently the PE rigidity and crystalli…

Synthesis and catalytic properties for olefin polymerization of new vanadium complexes containing silsesquioxane ligands with different denticity

2017

A series of new vanadium-silsesquioxanes (2a − 2d) was prepared by reacting VCl4 with not fully condensed silsesquioxanes (having from one to four silanol groups) and evaluated as pre-catalysts in olefin polymerization. The activation of 2a − 2d with EtAlCl2 generated highly active catalysts for ethylene polymerization, yielding high molar mass polymers with narrow dispersity. Ultra-high molar mass polyethylenes, Mw up to 4 × 106 g mol−1, were obtained with methylaluminoxane and Al(iBu)3/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] as activators. Upon treatment with methylaluminoxane and boron compounds, all vanadium pre-catalysts were active in 1-octene polymerization as well, and produced isotactic-rich poly(1-octen…
