Cocoa polyphenols and their potential benefits for human health.
2012
This paper compiles the beneficial effects of cocoa polyphenols on human health, especially with regard to cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders, and cancer prevention. Their antioxidant properties may be responsible for many of their pharmacological effects, including the inhibition of lipid peroxidation and the protection of LDL-cholesterol against oxidation, and increase resistance to oxidative stress. The phenolics from cocoa also modify the glycemic response and the lipid profile, decreasing platelet function and inflammation along with diastolic and systolic arterial pressures, which, taken together, may reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality. Cocoa polyph…
Sedative Effect and Standardization Parameters of Herbal Medicinal Product Obtained from the Ocimum americanum L. Herb
2021
Abstract Sedative phytomedications continue to play an important role in the management of a considerable amount of anxiety symptoms because of the various side effects of synthetic sedatives and tranquilizers. However, developing new herbal drugs needs their appropriate quality control according to the relevant requirements. The aim of the study was to determine the sedative properties of the tinctures obtained from the American basil (Ocimum americanum L., Lamiaceae Martinov family) herb and to develop the standardization parameters for the promising herbal medicinal product. The open field test was used to evaluate the sedative effect of the prepared tinctures: (1) with the added of O. a…
Investigation on the influence of spray-drying technology on the quality of Sicilian Nero d’Avola wines
2018
The purpose of the present work was to find a correlation between microencapsulation technology applied to wines and the resulting quality of the wine itself in terms of volatile composition and phenolic profile. To this aim, samples of Nero d'Avola wines produced in Sicily (Italy) were investigated in order to: i) elucidate the aromatic composition by means of HSâSPME coupled with GCâMS; ii) assess the polyphenolic content by UHPLC mass spectrometry; iii) compare the results obtained from both the screenings with those relative to the same wines that had previously been subjected to spray-drying. The results showed a marked reductionThe results here obtained evidenced a marked reductio…
p Natural polyphenols as anti-inflammatory agents p
2009
Celiac Disease is a worldwide spread condition affecting 1:100-1:200 individuals. It is a permanent food intolerance to ingested gluten in genetically predisposed subjects. In this review we analyze the biochemical markers of the disease going from laboratory findings to histology passing through genetics. Gluten intolerance is a unique model of autoimmune disease in which we can recognize the main environmental factor (gluten) and the more complex genetic background. In additional way, serological markers for monitoring the disease and a safe and effective therapy (gluten free diet) are also available. In deed the environmental factor such as gluten intake is necessary to trigger the disea…
HPLC-DAD profile of phenolic compounds and In vitro antioxidant activity of Ficus carica L. fruits from two Algerian varieties
2022
Ficus carica L., commonly known as the fig tree, is a plant belonging to the Moraceae family whose fruits are traditionally used for edible and therapeutic purposes. The study aimed to investigate the lyophilized aqueous extracts of two native Algerian fig varieties, azendjar (Az) and taamriouth (Ta), as a potential source of antioxidant compounds for possible use as ingredients in pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals. The HPLC-DAD analysis revealed the presence of two phenolic acids (3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid and vanillic acid) and two flavonoids (rutin and quercetin) at levels 3.67, 4.80, 84.16, and 6.87 µg/g respectively for Az variety extract, and 6.90, traces, 7.46 and 3.37 µg/g respectiv…
Effect of polyphenols on enniatins-induced cytotoxic effects in mammalian cells
2012
Enniatins (ENs) are fungal secondary metabolites produced by genus Fusarium. The ENs exert antimicrobial and insecticidal effect, and has also been demonstrated cytotoxic effects on several mammalian cell lines. On the other hands, it has been proved that natural polyphenols have antioxidant effect. In this study, cell effects at low levels of exposure of four ENs (A, A(1), B and B(1)) and five polyphenols (quercetin, quercetin-3-β-D-glucoside, rutin, myricetin and t-pterostilbene) present in wine; and the cytoprotective effect of these polyphenols exposed simultaneously with ENs in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO-K1) cells, were studied. Cell effects were determined by the MTT test after 24 h o…
Dietary polyphenols in chemoprevention and synergistic effect in cancer: Clinical evidences and molecular mechanisms of action
2020
Abstract Background Epidemiological studies has revealed that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables could lower the risk of certain cancers. In this setting, natural polyphenols are potent anticancer bioactive compounds to overcome the non-target specificity, undesirable cytotoxicity and high cost of treatment cancer chemotherapy. Purpose The review focuses on diverse classifications of the chemical diversity of dietary polyphenol and their molecular targets, modes of action, as well as preclinical and clinical applications in cancer prevention. Results The dietary polyphenols exhibit chemo-preventive activity through modulation of apoptosis, autophagy, cell cycle progression, inflammation, …
Importance pharmacologique des dérivés polyphénoliques
1996
Summary The polyphenol derivatives possess many biological and pharmacological properties. However, the main therapeutical uses are limited to hepatoprotective and vasculoprotective activities of flavonoids (sensu largo). This rewiev will summarize some of the important and recently updated reports of in vitro and in vivo biological assays to show antioxidative, antihypertensive, antiphlogistic, antiviral, potent antitumoral and chimiopreventive activities.
Phenolic profile of oils obtained from “horchata” by-products assisted by supercritical-CO2 and its relationship with antioxidant and lipid oxidation…
2019
Abstract In this study, the effect of different supercritical CO 2 (SC-CO 2 ) pressures (10–40 MPa) on phenolic compounds extraction in oils obtained from “ horchata ” by-products was evaluated, and the results were compared to those obtained after conventional oil extraction (CE). Moreover, the relationship between the individual phenolic compounds and the total antioxidant capacity as well as oil oxidative quality parameters was compared. The phenolic profile and contents were largely influenced by extracting conditions. The main phenolic compound obtained by SC-CO 2 was the isohydroxymatairesinol, particularly at 30 and 40 MPa, while 3-vinylphenol was the predominant compound in oils ext…
Antioxidant Bioactivity of Extracts from Beach Cast Leaves of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile
2021
The marine environment is a generous source of biologically active compounds useful for human health. In 50 years, about 25,000 bioactive marine compounds have been identified, with an increase of 5% per year. Peculiar feature of algae and plants is the production of secondary metabolites, such as polyphenols, synthesized as a form of adaptation to environmental stress. Posidonia oceanica is a Mediterranean endemic and dominant seagrass and represents a biologically, ecologically and geologically important marine ecosystem. Within this study, methanolic and ethanolic extracts were generated from fresh and dried Posidonia
