A blend of polyphenolic compounds explains the stimulatory effect of red wine on human endothelial NO synthase

A high intake of polyphenolic compounds is likely to have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. Especially red wine is a rich source of polyphenols, and we have previously shown that French red wine upregulates eNOS, a protective enzyme in the cardiovascular system. The current study tested (poly)phenolic constituents of red wine for their ability to enhance eNOS expression (and the activity of a 3.5-kb human eNOS promoter) in human EA.hy 926 endothelial cells. AbstractInhibition of cancer growth by resveratrol (trans-3,5,4'trihydroxystilbene; RESV), a phytoalexin present in many plant species, is limited by its low bioavailability. Pterostilbene (3,5-dimethoxy-4'-hydroxystilbene; PTER) and quercetin (3,3',4',5,6-pentahydroxyflavone; QUER), two structurally related and naturally occurring small polyphenols, show longer half-life in vivo. Effect of summer pruning on some fruit quality traits in Hayward kiwifruit

Introduction . The aim of our study was to analyze the effect of various levels of light availability in the fruit microenvironment (induced by summer pruning) on some fruit quality traits. Materials and methods . Two levels of summer pruning were set: removal of either 30% or 60% of the canopy leaf area. These treatments were compared with the control (unpruned vines). High pressure processing of carrot juice: Effect of static and multi-pulsed pressure on the polyphenolic profile, oxidoreductases activity and colour.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the influence of static and multi-pulsed hydrostatic pressure processing (HPP) treatments on the polyphenolic profile, oxidoreductase activity, colour, and browning index of carrot juice. Phenolic acids, flavonoids, lignans and other polyphenols were the predominant polyphenols detected with Triple-TOF-LC-MS/MS. The highest concentration of ferulic acid, didymin, dihydro-p-coumaric acid, sesaminol and matairesinol isomers were found among all the compounds detected. However, few data are available on the antitumoral activities of its dimer, epsilon-viniferin, also present in human diet. So, the effects of resveratrol, epsilon-viniferin, of their acetylated forms (resveratrol triacetate, epsilon-viniferin pentaacetate) and of vineatrol (a wine grape extract) were compared on human adenocarcinoma colon cells. Effects of Zizyphus lotus L. (Desf.) polyphenols on Jurkat cell signaling and proliferation.

We assessed the effects of Zizyphus lotus L. (Desf.) polyphenols (ZLP) on T-cell signaling and proliferation. Our results showed that ZLP exerted no effect on the increases in intracellular free calcium concentrations, [Ca(2+)]i, in human Jurkat T-cells. However, ZLP modulated the thapsigargin-induced increases in [Ca(2+)]i in these cells. ZLP treatment was found to decrease the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2). In addition, ZLP induced a rapid (t1/2=33s) and dose-dependent decrease in intracellular pH (pHi) in human Jurkat T-cells. Effects of irrigation on fruit ripening behavior and metabolic changes in olive

Olive (Olea europaea, cv Leccino) fruits grown under different water regimes were analyzed by metabolomics and specific transcript accumulation analyses. The fruit from non-irrigated (rain-fed) and irrigated trees cultivated under field conditions, with a seasonal water amount equivalent to the calculated crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was compared in the last developmental phase and, in particular, at commercial harvest.
