Estimation of the size of liposomes by modified HDC

1991

Internal calibration in modified hydrodynamic chromatography has been realized by the approach of Prieve and Hoysan, i.e. the use of polystyrene monodisperse latexes to evaluate the equivalent capillary radius, R. The value obtained has been used to estimate the average sizes of a variety of liposome samples from egg yolk lecithin.

The second osmotic virial coefficient A2 and its entropic and enthalpic parts of athermal and exothermal solutions of polystyrene…

Competitive Adsorption of Functionalized Polymers

1996

The adsorption and desorption of functionalized polystyrene-block-polybutadiene diblock copolymers from dilute solutions in toluene onto silicon wafers are investigated by means of null ellipsometry. The short polybutadiene block is functionalized by a reaction with 4-(3,5-dioxo-1,2,4-triazolidin-4-yl)benzoic acid. On the average there are six functional groups per chain. The polystyrene block does not adsorb on the surface. The adsorption depends on the length of the polystyrene block, and chains with short polystyrene blocks yield higher surface coverage than larger ones. When short and long chains are put together, the short chains displace the long ones in equilibrium conditions nearly …

Synthesis and large scale fractionation of non-linear polymers: brushes and hyperbranched polymers

2002

Polymer brushes with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) backbone and polystyrene side chains were synthesized by radical polymerization of ω-methacryloyl-polystyrene macromonomers. Hyperbranched PMMA was obtained by means of self-condensing group transfer copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with an initiator-monomer containing a polymerizable methacryloyl moiety and an initiating silylketeneacetal function. Both non-linear products were fractionated using the method of continuous polymer fractionation, consisting in a particular type of continuous countercurrent extraction. The combination of methyl ethyl ketone (solvent) with acetone (AC) (precipitant) turned out to be suitable for the f…

Synthesis of 3D dendritic gold nanostructures assisted by a templated growth process: Application at the detection of traces of molecules

2020

International audience; Complex architectures like 3D gold dendritic nanostructures were synthesized by an in situ templated growth method using a thin film of a block copolymer [polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine)] deposited onto silicon substrates. The overall study has demonstrated the strong link between the morphology, size, and distribution of the structures and the synthetic physicochemical parameters, such as pH, reaction temperature, concentration, and nature of reactants. A nonequilibirum state of the medium has been required to create a fractal growth of the gold structures onto a prepatterned gold-seeded surface and has led to a better control of the structures' surface coverage…

Coil overlap in moderately concentrated polyelectrolyte solutions: effects of self-shielding as compared with salt-shielding as a function of chain l…

2016

The generalized intrinsic viscosity {η} (hydrodynamic volume of the solute at arbitrary polymer concentration c) – introduced by analogy to the intrinsic viscosity [η] – provides access to the degree of coil overlap Ω for polyelectrolyte solutions in pure water or in saline water. The experimental basis of this investigation consists in viscosity measurements as a function of c for a large number of sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Na-PSS) samples covering the molecular weight range from 0.91 to 1000 kg mol−1. The accurate modeling of these dependencies with a maximum of three parameters yields detailed information on Ω as a function of (c[η]) in the absence and in the presence of extra salt. …

Hydrophobically Directed Aldol Reactions: Polystyrene-SupportedL-Proline as a Recyclable Catalyst for Direct Asymmetric Aldol Reactions in the Presen…

2007

The cover picture shows the aldol reaction between ketones and arylaldehydes carried out by using a polystyrene-supported L-proline catalyst. This material furnishes aldol products in high yields and stereoselectivities. Screening of solvents showed that these reactions take place only in the presence of water. This solvent effect, coupled with the high stereoselectivities observed, has been explained by the formation of a hydrophobic core in the inner surface of the resin with the hydrophilic proline moiety in the resin/water interface. Such a microenvironment promotes the aldol reaction and increases the stereoselectivity. Recycling investigations have shown that this material can be reus…

Temperature Variation Enables the Design of Biobased Block Copolymers via One‐Step Anionic Copolymerization

2021

A one-pot approach for the preparation of diblock copolymers consisting of polystyrene and polymyrcene blocks is described via a temperature-induced block copolymer (BCP) formation strategy. A monomer mixture of styrene and myrcene is employed. The unreactive nature of myrcene in a polar solvent (tetrahydrofuran) at -78 °C enables the sole formation of active polystyrene macroinitiators, while an increase of the temperature (-38 °C to room temperature) leads to poly(styrene-block-myrcene) formation due to polymerization of myrcene. Well-defined BCPs featuring molar masses in the range of 44-117.2 kg mol-1 with dispersities, Ð, of 1.09-1.21, and polymyrcene volume fractions of 30-64% are acc…

How Low Can You Go? Low Densities of Poly(ethylene glycol) Surfactants Attract Stealth Proteins.

2018

It is now well-established that the surface chemistry and “stealth” surface functionalities such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains of nanocarriers play an important role to decrease unspecific protein adsorption of opsonizing proteins, to increase the enrichment of specific stealth proteins, and to prolong the circulation times of the nanocarriers. At the same time, PEG chains are used to provide colloidal stability for the nanoparticles. However, it is not clear how the chain length and density influence the unspecific and specific protein adsorption keeping at the same time the stability of the nanoparticles in a biological environment. Therefore, this study aims at characterizing the…
