Core-shell polyacrylate and polystyrene-block-polyacrylate stars

The polymerization of p-(iodomethyl)styrene (PIMS) yields well-defined branched polymers with reactive iodomethyl groups. The branched poly[p-(iodomethyl)styrene] was used as the transfer agent in the iodine mediated radical polymerization of vinyl monomers. The polymerization proceeds in a controlled way and yields polystyrene and poly(t-butyl acrylate) star polymers with reactive groups at the end of their arms. Polymers so obtained were also used to prepare stars with block copolymer arms: polystyrene-block-poly(t-butyl acrylate). Tracer diffusion coefficients D* of both components were measured in mixtures of polystyrene (PS) and polymethylstyrene (PMS), a random copolymer from 60 wt.-% of m-methylstyrene and 40 wt.-% of p-methylstyrene. The results are interpreted in terms of the free-volume theory which yields master curves even for “asymmetric” mixtures of oligomer and polymer chains, if D* is drawn versus the distance from the glass transition temperature, T–Tg. Whereas D* was measured by the forced Rayleigh scattering technique, we also studied photon correlation spectroscopy in these mixtures and observed “slow modes” with decay constants that correspond to diffusion coefficients 2–3 decades smaller than the i…

Solution properties of polyelectrolytes

Abstract Chromatographic data for sodium polystyrene sulphonate were obtained on both silica- and polymer-based size-exclusion supports using mobile phases of various pH and ionic strength. Deviations of the elution volume were observed towards both lower and higher values relative to the reference calibration graph obtained with uncharged standards. An empirical correlation is proposed in order to account for all the secondary effects observed. Ein fraktioniertes Polystyrol vom Molekulargewicht Mw ≈ 540000 wurde in Chloroform, Toluol, Methylathylketon und Cyclohexan sowie in drei Mischungen von Toluol und Methylathylketon untersucht. Da das Chloroform ein gutes, das Cyclohexan dagegen ein Θ-Losungsmittel fur Polystyrol darstellt, nehmen die Dimensionen des Fadenmolekuls beim Ubergang zwischen den Losungsmitteln ab. Size Dependence of Tracer Diffusion in Supercooled Liquids

We have determined by forced Rayleigh scattering the diffusion coefficients D of several photochromic tracers with van der Waals radii between 0.38 and 8 nm (the largest ones being photolabeled polystyrene micronetworks) in 10 glass-forming liquids at temperatures between the glass temperature Tg and ∼1.2Tg. The results were analyzed in terms of power law plots, D(T) ∝ T/η(T)ξ, where η is the solvent shear viscosity, and temperature shifts, D(T) ∝ T/η(T + ΔT). The shift ΔT was related with the width of the rotational correlation time distribution via the time−temperature superposition principle.

Deposition and production of highly reproducible hybrid Cu[(tBu)4Pc]-polystyrene thin layers via spin casting

This study focuses on the determination of a protocol for the production of a hybrid material composed of a polymer and a macrocyclic complex, namely polystyrene and a tetra-tert-butyl-copper phthalocyanine (Cu[(tBu)4Pc]), in order to obtain a layer thickness of about 100 nm and a controlled porosity in a highly reproducible way. Several methods were implemented and their reproducibility was evaluated through elements of characterization such as optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Mixtures of high molecular weight polystyrene (P n = 961.5 ; T g = 373 K) and sec-butyl-terminated oligostyrene (P n = 10.6 ; T g = 302 K) show a dependence of the glass transition on the composition (i.e., number-average molecular weight) which cannot be described by the classic equations of Fox & Flory or Kanig & Ueberreiter. Addition of small amounts of the oligostyrene strongly decreases the glass transition, and above an oligomer content of 40 wt.-% the glass transition remains constant within experimental error. Spherical and rod-like colloids with polymer-brush surfaces

In this paper, we describe a strategy to overcome incompatibility of colloidal particles and polymer coils as well as immiscibility of spherical and rod-shaped nanoparticles. Two new types of model colloids are presented, colloidal nanospheres with hairy surfaces (spherical brushes) and polymacromonomers to represent cylindrical brushes. The spherical brushes are synthesized from polyorganosiloxane-μ-gels of diameter 20 nm by grafting onto anionically prepared polystyrene macromonomers of molecular weight M w=5000 g/mol. In a polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) triblock copolymer (SBM) a morphological transition from a lamellar (ll) morphology (with sequence ABCB) to the knitting pattern (kp) morphology occurs upon hydrogenation of the center PB block. Structural information of the nonhydrogenated and the hydrogenated material is provided from small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For the nonhydrogenated SBM sample the SAXS profile correlates well with a simple periodic lamellar structure. The hydrogenated sample forming the kp morphology displays a more complex SAXS pattern.
