Quantitative Structure-Antioxidant Activity Models of Isoflavonoids: A Theoretical Study

2015

Seventeen isoflavonoids from isoflavone, isoflavanone and isoflavan classes are selected from Dalbergia parviflora. The ChEMBL database is representative from these molecules, most of which result highly drug-like. Binary rules appear risky for the selection of compounds with high antioxidant capacity in complementary xanthine/xanthine oxidase, ORAC, and DPPH model assays. Isoflavonoid structure-activity analysis shows the most important properties (log P, log D, pKa, QED, PSA, NH + OH ≈ HBD, N + O ≈ HBA). Some descriptors (PSA, HBD) are detected as more important than others (size measure Mw, HBA). Linear and nonlinear models of antioxidant potency are obtained. Weak nonlinear relationship…

The re Structure of Cyclopropane

2000

A long-standing controversy regarding the re structure of cyclopropane is resolved by performing high-level quantum chemical calculations and analyzing the experimental rotational constants for C3H6 and C3H4D2 augmented by calculated vibrational corrections. For the latter, a least-squares fit yields the following set of parameters:  re (CC) = 1.5030(10) A, re(CH) = 1.0786(10) A, and αe(HCH) = 114.97(10)°, which compare favorably with both the pure computational result obtained at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVQZ level as well as an earlier estimate of the re structure of cyclopropane based on analysis of gas-phase electron diffraction data. Our results are in rather poor agreement with a structure base…

High-Generation Amphiphilic Janus-Dendrimers as Stabilizing Agents for Drug Suspensions

2018

Pharmaceutical nanosuspensions are formed when drug crystals are suspended in aqueous media in the presence of stabilizers. This technology offers a convenient way to enhance the dissolution of poorly water-soluble drug compounds. The stabilizers exert their action through electrostatic or steric interactions, however, the molecular requirements of stabilizing agents have not been studied extensively. Here, four structurally related amphiphilic Janus-dendrimers were synthesized and screened to determine the roles of different macromolecular domains on the stabilization of drug crystals. Physical interaction and nanomilling experiments have substantiated that Janus-dendrimers with fourth gen…

A Proposal to Compare Consistently the Inequality Among the Poor

2013

A poverty index should be sensitive to the number of poor people, the extent of the shortfall of the poor, and the inequality among the poor. A difficulty arises when inequality among the poor needs to be assessed. The inequality may be analyzed in terms of either incomes or gaps. Depending on what side we focus on, the inequality level comparisons may be contradictory. This paper proposes a reinterpretation of the inequality component involved in the decompositions of well-known poverty indices. The alternative indices we introduce measure equally the income and gap inequality among the poor. The comparisons in inequality as measured by these indices are then independent of the viewpoint. …

HIV-Infected Children and Nutrition: The Friend and The Foe

2019

The impact of nutrition on HIV-infected children has been evaluated in multiple studies. Our review of the current trends of nutrition-related studies revealed that the focus has moved from simply the disease consequences of HIV to ensuring that antiretroviral therapy-treated children are well nourished to ensure growth and development. This update aims to present the state of the art regarding nutrition of HIV-infected children and the real potential for nutrition to serve as a dynamic therapy in this group. Recent World Health Organization reports indicate that the HIV/AIDS disease is curbing in incidence worldwide despite the high 1.8 million children, less than 15 years, reported in 201…

Settore IUS/07 - Diritto Del LavoroArt. 32 L. 183/2010 raises several questions related to its application mainly due to its poor drafting. This essay analyses the controversial issue of the meaning of paragraph 4 letter c) and letter d) which concern respectively the transfer of the employment contract in accordance with Art. 2112 Civil Code and the creation and/or the ascertaining of an employment relationship with someone other than the holder of the contract. The Author provides the coordinates for a proper and duly restrictive understanding of the norms on limitation in the light of its literal interpretation and in accordance with EU law.

Summary ― The work presents the results of the bio-archaeological analyzes carried out on human skeletal remains found in fourteen burials of Medieval chronology at the Archaeological Park of Valle dei Templi in Agrigentum (Sicily). The aim of the work was the acquisition of the information necessary for the reconstruction of the biological profile of each individual throught the determination of sex the estimate of the biological age at death the estimate of height and the evaluation of pathologies and markers of occupational stress through current anthropological diagnostic methodologies and techniques. Althought the poor state of conservation of some individuals has not allowed their whole anthropological characterization the investigations have highlighted the heterogeneity relating to the age groups and have allowed us to ascertain the presence of pathological alterations in subjects of mature age sometimes of unknown etiology such as DISH (Diffuse Idiopathic Hyperostosis). The sample size is not representative of the entire population but subsequent insights will provide a better understanding of the population dynamics of Medieval Agrigentum.Settore BIO/08 - Antropologia

The effect of chitosan on the bioaccessibility and intestinal permeability of acyclovir

2019

Chitosan is object of pharmaceutical research as a candidate permeability enhancer. However, chitosan was recently shown to reduce the oral bioavailability of acyclovir in humans. The effect of chitosan on two processes determining the oral bioavailability of acyclovir, bioaccessibility and intestinal absorption, was now investigated. Acyclovir's bioaccessibility was studied using the dynamic TNO gastro-Intestinal Model (TIM-1). Four epithelial models were used for permeability experiments: a Caco-2 cell model in absence and presence of mucus and both rat and porcine excised intestinal segments. Study concentrations of acyclovir (0.8 g/l) and chitosan (1.6 g/l and 4 g/l) were in line with t…
