Osteoporosis, densidad mineral ósea y complejo CKD-MBD (I): consideraciones diagnósticas

2018

Response of Osteoporotic Jaw Bone to Implantation of Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Bioceramics Supplemented with Autologous Mesenchymal Cells

2016

To target areas of the skeletal system which are clinically significant sites is a new strategy as the"local treatment of osteoporosis". Synthetic bioceramics implanted into critical sized bone defect of rats with experimental osteoporosis demonstrateds better effect to bone tissue repair in osteoporosis and/or osteoporosis status. Stem cell transplantation may improve bone mineral density in animal models of osteoporosis. An adequate blood supply of mesenchymal cells (MSCs and osteoprogenitors) is important for efficient bone regeneration. The concentration and quality of MSCs may vary significantly, depending on the individual (especially in older people), the cell obtaining sites and tec…

Bone loss in inflammatory Bowel disease: our multicentric study

2011

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at increased risk of developing disorder in bone and mineral metabolism The study was aimed to determine if inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a risk factor for osteoporosis in 103 adult patients. We included 103 IBD patients, 67 patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and 36 with ulcerative colitis (UC). Bone mineral density was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We used T score to express bone loss (osteopenia: -2.5 SD 2 years) and active disease would be risk factors of bone mineral loss in IBD.

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN LOW BONE MINERAL DENSITY, METABOLIC SYNDROME AND SEX STEROIDS DEFICIENCY IN MEN.

2019

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between low bone mineral density (BMD), metabolic syndrome (MS) and sex hormones deficiency in men. METHODS: We included in this retrospective study 199 men with osteoporosis or osteopenia and 167 men with normal BMD as controls, aged between 55-85 years old. Patients’ evaluation included: medical history and physical examination, X-ray of thoracic and lumbar spine, measuring BMD at hip and lumbar spine, serum glucose and lipid profile, serum levels of total testosterone (tT), free testosterone (fT) and estradiol (E2). RESULTS: The results revealed a significant association between low BMD and MS (p=0.011). Vertebral fractures were more frequently assoc…

Immunohistochemical Evaluation of Periodontal Regeneration Using a Porous Collagen Scaffold.

2021

(1) Aim: To immunohistochemically evaluate the effect of a volume-stable collagen scaffold (VCMX) on periodontal regeneration. (2) Methods: In eight beagle dogs, acute two-wall intrabony defects were treated with open flap debridement either with VCMX (test) or without (control). After 12 weeks, eight defects out of four animals were processed for paraffin histology and immunohistochemistry. (3) Results: All defects (four test + four control) revealed periodontal regeneration with cementum and bone formation. VCMX remnants were integrated in bone, periodontal ligament (PDL), and cementum. No differences in immunohistochemical labeling patterns were observed between test and control sites. N…

Processing of rock core microtomography images: Using seven different machine learning algorithms

2016

The abilities of machine learning algorithms to process X-ray microtomographic rock images were determined. The study focused on the use of unsupervised, supervised, and ensemble clustering techniques, to segment X-ray computer microtomography rock images and to estimate the pore spaces and pore size diameters in the rocks. The unsupervised k-means technique gave the fastest processing time and the supervised least squares support vector machine technique gave the slowest processing time. Multiphase assemblages of solid phases (minerals and finely grained minerals) and the pore phase were found on visual inspection of the images. In general, the accuracy in terms of porosity values and pore…

The selective estrogen receptor modulator, bazedoxifene, reduces ischemic brain damage in male rat

2014

While the estrogen treatment of stroke is under debate, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) arise as a promising alternative. We hypothesize that bazedoxifene (acetate, BZA), a third generation SERM approved for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, reduces ischemic brain damage in a rat model of transient focal cerebral ischemia. For comparative purposes, the neuroprotective effect of 17β-estradiol (E2) has also been assessed. Male Wistar rats underwent 60min middle cerebral artery occlusion (intraluminal thread technique), and grouped according to treatment: vehicle-, E2- and BZA-treated rats. Optimal plasma concentrations of E2 (45.6±7.8pg/ml) and BZA (20.7±2.1ng/ml) w…

Safety Considerations of Inhaled Corticosteroids in the Elderly

2014

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) are widely used in the treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. However, high-dose regimens and long-term use of ICSs have the potential to cause a variety of local and systemic side effects such as candidiasis, cataracts, glaucoma, and osteoporosis. The use of ICSs can also be associated with the risk of bone fractures, diabetes mellitus and pneumonia. These ICS-related side effects are of particular importance in elderly patients due to the presence of comorbidities and age-related behavioral, cognitive, and psychological problems, which can all interact with inhaled treatment. We reviewed the available literature on the clinically …

Circulating cathepsin K and cystatin C in patients with cancer related bone disease: clinical and therapeutic implications.

2007

Abstract The clinical significance of serum cathepsin K and cystatin C was assessed in patients with breast cancer (BCa) or prostate cancer (PCa) with confined disease (M0) or bone metastasis (BM). Cathepsin K and cystatin C circulating levels were determined by ELISAs in 63 cancer patients, in 35 patients with nonmalignant diseases and in 42 healthy blood donors (control group). In BCa patients, cathepsin K serum levels were significantly lower than in sex matched control group (HS; p  = 0.0008) or in patients with primary osteoporosis (OP; p  = 0.0009). On the contrary, cystatin C levels were significantly higher in BCa patients than in HS ( p  = 0.0001) or OP ( p  = 0.017). In PCa patien…
