Sedimentary humic substances from lakes in Latvia

1997

Humic and fulvic acids, isolated from sediments of lakes in different trophic states (Latvia) were studied. The humic substances (HS) were characterized by their elemental and functional composition, their spectral properties, and molecular mass. The humus properties strongly depend on the origin of the sedimentary HS. Substantial similarity between sedimentary HS from oligotrophic and dystrophic water bodies was found, unless the biology of these lakes greatly differs. Humic molecules from sediments of oligotrophic and dystrophic lakes are smaller, more uniform, and contain lower amounts of carboxyl- and hydroxyl-groups than HS from meso- and eutrophic water bodies. On the other hand, sedi…

Examination of coagulant additives on qualitative composition of selected thermal waters

2017

On the territory of Poland occur rich deposits of thermal waters. Although the utilisation of these waters is continuously extending, Poland is not exploiting their full geothermal potential due to high investment costs. Thermal waters industry in Poland to date indicates operations within mainly balneology as well as recreation objectives. Higher temperature values of these waters foster a washout in the surrounding rocks resulting in a high concentration of diluted substances which must be often removed. The following study investigates thermal waters from three intakes for which coagulation processes were conducted. Research clearly shows that coagulant additives not impact on the qualit…

Multi-elemental EDXRF mapping of polluted soil from former horticultural land.

2004

The distribution of major and trace elements was systematically investigated by use of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) on a former horticultural soil. The purpose of the study was to combine mapping of soil element concentration levels with multivariate statistics for characterisation of soil metal pollution in relation to previous and present land use. A 1-ha study site was chosen from a former horticulture where a previous preliminary survey indicated increased concentration levels of toxic elements. The soil was sampled from the top 20 cm of the soil surface in a 10×10-m grid-like pattern covering the 1-ha study area. In addition, three soil profiles were studie…

Economic Concentrations vs State of Competitive Space

2017

Achieving market performance is the main objective of companies in business transactions. Developing competitiveness and gaining a large market share is conditional on achieving the proposed objectives. A way to increase the market power is to do mergers or takeovers. They can be vertical or horizontal, depending on the type of activity realized by the parties. Effects resulting from the economic mergers made under certain conditions, can distort the competitive environment on the market, with a serious damage. This leads to the need to analyze them in the compatibility with the competitive environment. Permission to achieve a merger occurs after a comprehensive study of cases considering t…

Utebarnehager – et sted for demokratisk praksis?

2013

The questions in the title is posed to discuss how an outdoor kindergarten space is contextualized and understood by those who are staying there. Nature is often seen as an especially open space, free from strong guidelines and structures. Being part of an educational practice gives the place new structures. The activities the children participate in and the employees expressed attitudes and practices are part of different discourses, which give certain limits or possibilities for what is going on at the Hut, and thus influence a democratic practice. Especially children’s play activities represent an opposition to the adult’s framing of the place. Democracy presupposes some frames, but if t…

Las dimensiones filosófica y antropológica de la interpretación educativa

2006

The central thesis sustained in this article focuses on the idea that any complete educational exposition needs a philosophical an anthropological dimension. This article presents three philosophical conceptions which sustain and give coverage to the disciplines that are taught in some Spanish universities: Oviedo, Granada and Valencia. Although these positions are quite different they share a common starting point: the defence of a philosophical conception as the basis of the Theory of the Education.

Marcatge posicional i prominència en el vocalisme àton

2008

It has long been noticed that more perceptible elements tend to associate to positions that are structurally stronger to the end that several prominent features converge in the same site; and vice versa: elements of low perceptibility prototypically associate to less prominent positions ("positional markedness"). The main aim of this paper is to present the effects of positional markedness in the a-tonic vowel system of Catalan through the analysis of two cases that have not been studied in depth, i.e. the occurrence of different epenthetic vowels according to the position in which they appear in Alghero and western Catalan, and the presence of different patterns of vowel reduction in weste…

A focused ultrasound treatment system for moving targets (part I): generic system design and in-silico first-stage evaluation

2017

Abstract Background Focused ultrasound (FUS) is entering clinical routine as a treatment option. Currently, no clinically available FUS treatment system features automated respiratory motion compensation. The required quality standards make developing such a system challenging. Methods A novel FUS treatment system with motion compensation is described, developed with the goal of clinical use. The system comprises a clinically available MR device and FUS transducer system. The controller is very generic and could use any suitable MR or FUS device. MR image sequences (echo planar imaging) are acquired for both motion observation and thermometry. Based on anatomical feature tracking, motion pr…

Type 2 diabetes family histories, body composition and fasting glucose levels: A cross-section analysis in healthy sedentary male and female

2013

Background: Diabetes type 2 is a world wide spread disease with a multifactorial pathogenetic evolution. Various factors like obesity, physical inactivity and poor lifestyle habits contribute to its development. The aim of this study was to verify if in young healthy sedentary male and female there is positive correlation between family history to type 2 diabetes and an increase in body weight and fat mass, or alterations in basal glycemia values. Methods: Totally183 male and 237 female healthy sedentary subjects were analysed in 2012, in Italy. They were divided in three groups: FH+ with first degree family history, FH++ with second degree family history and FH− with no family history. Ant…

ASTEROIDS SEARCH RESULTS IN LARGE PHOTOGRAPHIC SKY SURVEYS

2017

Photographic observations of XX century contained numerous and varied information about all objects  and  events  of  the  Universe  fixed  on  plates.  The original and interesting observations of small bodies of the Solar  system  in  previous  years  can  be  selected  and  used for various scientific tasks. Existing databases and online services can help make such selection easily and quickly.  The observations of chronologically earlier ppositions, photometric  evaluation  of  brightness  for  long  periods  of time allow refining the orbits of asteroids and identifying various non-stationaries. Photographic observations of Northern Sky Survey project  and  observations  of  clusters  …
