----- The article relates the recognition theory of Axel Honneth and the sociology of education. It gives a brief exposition of the formulations and…

"optimism Is a Strategy for Making a Better Future": A Systematic Review on the Associations of Dispositional Optimism with Health-Related Quality of…

2022

Abstract. Cancer is a deadly disease that can lead to psychological suffering and decreased quality of life (QoL). Personality has been proven to have an effect on QoL and, in particular, Dispositional Optimism (DO) has been studied in relation to overcoming health crisis. The aim of this systematic review is to deepen the state of art of the relationship between QoL and DO in cancer patients. PubMed and Embase databases were systematically searched. Fifteen studies were included with a total of 5,249 cancer patients. All of the studies consider the relationship between DO and QoL, some studies analyze the correlation between the two variables and found a positive association. The majority…

The Moderating Role of Intellectual Humility in the Adoption of ICT: A Study Across Life-Span

2018

Literature has shown age-related differences in the adoption process. In this way, it is very important to encourage the adoption of ICT by the elderly, in order to maintain their independence in daily life. However, some specific cognitive variables were not considered in theoretical models until a decade ago. One of the emerging fields in this area is the science of learnable intelligence, which investigates the role of thinking dispositions. The variable which we have focused on is intellectual humility. For this propose, a sample of 306 participants from 18 to 87 years was selected. Age was selected as a predictor variable. Intellectual humility was tested as a moderator between ageing …

2022

Data from: Temperature-associated habitat selection in a cold-water marine fish

2016

Habitat selection is a complex process, which involves behavioural decisions guided by the multiple needs and constraints faced by individuals. Climate-induced changes in environmental conditions may alter those trade-offs and resulting habitat use patterns. In this study we investigated the effect of sea temperature on habitat selection and habitat use of acoustically tagged Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) at the Norwegian Skagerrak coast. Significant relationships between ocean temperature and habitat selection and use were found. Under favourable sea temperature thresholds (< 16°C), cod selected vegetated habitats, such as eelgrass and macroalgae beds, available in shallow areas. Selectio…

Artificial Neural Network Based Abdominal Organ Segmentations: A Review

2015

There are many neural network based abdominal organ segmentation approaches from medical images. Computed tomography images were mostly used in these approaches. Applied techniques are usually based on prior information regarding position, shape, and size of organs in these methods. In the literature, there are only a few neural network based techniques that were implemented to segment abdominal organs from magnetic resonance based images. In this paper, we present these methods and their results.

Identical fits of nonnegative matrix/tensor factorization may correspond to different extracted event-related potentials

2010

Nonnegative Matrix / Tensor factorization (NMF/NTF) have been used in the study of EEG, and the fit (explained variation) is often used to evaluate the performance of a nonnegative decomposition algorithm. However, this parameter only reveals the information derived from the mathematical model and just exhibits the reliability of the algorithms, and the property of EEG can not be reflected. If fits of two algorithms are identical, it is necessary to examine whether the desired components extracted by them are identical too. In order to verify this doubt, we performed NMF and NTF on the same dataset of an auditory event-related potentials (ERPs), and found that the identical fits of NMF and …

Recognition of Cardiac Arrhythmia by Means of Beat Clustering on ECG-Holter Recordings

2012

The follow-up of some cardiac diseases may be achieved by ECG-holter record analysis. A heartbeat clustering method can be used to reduce the usually high computational cost of such Holter analysis. This study describes a method aimed at cardiac arrhythmia recognition based on this approach, by means of unsupervised inspection of morphologically similar heartbeat groups. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is used as the feature selection method since the complexity increases exponentially with the number of features. A modification of the k-means algorithm was developed for centroid computation, taking into account heartbeat length changes. Experimental set consisted of ECG records from the…
