Paths of grammaticalization of Early Latin per/per-: A cognitive hypothesis
2016
The paper describes the semantic network of the Early Latin preverb per- and its relation with the corresponding preposition per ‘through’. Making use of the Cognitive Grammar framework, we argue that the basic spatial semantics of both preverb and preposition (here called the “PER relation”) can account for the whole set of concrete and abstract meanings per and per- express. In spite of this common semantic nucleus, however, per- and per differ as to the mechanisms at work in the development and organization of their semantic continua, thus imposing a differentiated analysis at the semantic as well as the morphosyntactic level. In this respect, the notions of grammaticalization and lexica…

Paths of grammaticalisation of the Early Latin per/per-: a cognitive hypothesis
2010
We intend to analyse the polysemic network of the Early Latin preverb per- and the relationship linking it with the corresponding preposition per ‘through’. Our corpus is constituted by Plautus’ comedies and Cato’s De Agri Cultura, which represent a substantial sample of the oldest Latin attestations in an extensive and non-fragmentary form. This choice allows a broad survey of the formerly grammaticalised usages of the preverb, constituting a firm platform to gain a perspective on its evolutionary lines. Our analysis is based on the Functional-Cognitive approach to grammaticalisation (Langacker 1987, 1991; Heine et al. 1991; Hopper & Traugott 1993), as well as on the existent functional an…
MEDIUM-TERM DETERMINANTS OF INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT POSITIONS: THE ROLE OF STRUCTURAL POLICIES
2012
This paper provides an empirical investigation of the medium-term determinants of international investment positions for a large sample of advanced and emerging economies. In addition to the usually considered drivers of foreign assets and liabilities, the analysis focuses on the role of structural policy indicators. Using cross-section and panel regression techniques the results suggest that structural policy settings are important medium-term drivers of capital flows, having a relatively large impact on gross and net foreign capital positions and on their composition. In particular, the results suggest that certain kinds of structural policy reform could help to narrow global imbalances,…
Prepositions and pronouns in connected discourse of individuals with aphasia
2018
The lexical-grammatical divide has been a widely addressed topic in aphasia. Speech parts are generally classified as either belonging to a lexical or a grammatical category based on the frequency of acquisition of new members in their paradigms (open vs. closed classes), thus neglecting heterogeneity within categories. Such an approach has led to contradictory findings. First, prepositions form closed classes, but are classically taken as lexical items. Pronouns, also belonging to a closed class, are analyzed as grammatical elements. Second, both within the group of prepositions and pronouns, forms with different syntactic and semantic properties co-exist. Following the theoretical notions…
Intra-party heterogeneity in policy preferences and its effect on issue salience: Developing and applying a measure based on elite survey data
2017
Quantitative research on party politics often has to assume that parties are unitary actors with homogeneous policy preferences simply because intra-party heterogeneity is difficult to measure. This article proposes a measure of preference heterogeneity based on surveys of party elites. We draw on Comparative Candidates Survey (CCS) data from 28 elections in 21 developed democracies to quantify intra-party heterogeneity and validate this measure. The usefulness of the measure is demonstrated by studying the effects of intra-party heterogeneity on issue salience. We find support for the hypothesis that heterogeneity regarding a policy issue tends to be negatively associated with the emphasi…
Temperature dependence of the local structure and lattice dynamics of wurtzite-type ZnO
2014
Temperature-dependent (10–300 K) Zn K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of polycrystalline wurtzitetype ZnO were analyzed using ab initio multiple-scattering theory and taking into account anisotropy of the crystallographic structure and thermal disorder. We employed two different simulation approaches: classical molecular dynamics (MD) and reverse Monte Carlo coupled with an evolutionary algorithm (RMC/EA method). The accuracy of several force-field models, which are commonly used in the MD simulations of bulk and nanostructured ZnO, was tested based on a comparison between the experimental and simulated Zn K-edge EXAFS spectra. It was found that available force…
Chemical composition of two-photon oxidized graphene
2017
Chemical composition of two-photon oxidized single-layer graphene is studied by micrometer X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Oxidized areas with a size of 2 × 2 μm2 are patterned on graphene by tightly focused femtosecond pulsed irradiation under air atmosphere. The degree of oxidation is controlled by varying the irradiation time. The samples are characterized by four wave mixing (FWM) imaging and Raman spectroscopy/imaging. Micrometer-XPS is used to study local chemical composition of oxidized areas. XPS imaging shows good contrast between oxidized and non-oxidized areas. Gradual oxidation is observed from growth of signals attributed mainly to hydroxyl (Csingle bondOH) and epoxide …
Oppositori a Messina nel Trecento. Il caso di Enrico Rosso
2021
The paper wil…
