A new technique for the treatment of nasal telangiectasia using atmospheric plasma (voltaic arc dermabrasion): Postoperative pain assessment by therm…

2020

Background Nasal telangiectasias are superficial, small vessels in the ala nasi and nasolabial crease with a varying origin. They represent an unaesthetic condition, frustrating patients who frequently request their removal. Microsclerotherapy, electrosurgery, different types of laser therapy, needle-assisted electrocoagulation, and TRASER therapy have been described for treating this condition. Aims The aim of this study is to describe a novel technique that removes nasal telengectiasias using voltaic arc dermabrasion (VAD). Patients/methods Voltaic arc dermabrasion treatment was used to remove nasal telangiectasia in 23 patients. The post-treatment condition was monitored by means of phot…

Positive Effect of Steroids in Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome

2019

We present a case of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome with severe clinical manifestation. Apart from initial aphasia, hemiparesis, and a generalized seizure, the patient had a prolonged loss of consciousness. Although blood pressure was normalized, the clinical status deteriorated continuously. After adding steroids to the therapy, the patient recovered rapidly, suggesting that this could have been a useful therapeutic approach. Even the vasogenic edema in the cerebral magnetic resonance imaging disappeared shortly within 6 days.

Diabetes mellitus secondary to Cushing's disease

2018

Associated with important comorbidities that significantly reduce patients’ overall wellbeing and life expectancy, Cushing’s disease (CD) is the most common cause of endogenous hypercortisolism. Glucocorticoid excess can lead to diabetes, and although its prevalence is probably underestimated, up to 50% of patients with CD have varying degrees of altered glucose metabolism. Fasting glycemia may nevertheless be normal in some patients in whom glucocorticoid excess leads primarily to higher postprandial glucose levels. An oral glucose tolerance test should thus be performed in all CD patients to identify glucose metabolism abnormalities. Since diabetes mellitus (DM) is a consequence of cortis…

Tartrate-Resistant Acid Phosphatase 5b: A Novel Serum Marker of Bone Resorption

2000

Human serum contains two forms of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), 5a and 5b. Of these, 5a contains sialic acid and 5b does not. We show here that antigenic properties and pH optimum of TRAP purified from human osteoclasts are identical to those of serum TRAP 5b and completely different from those of serum TRAP 5a, suggesting that 5b would be derived from osteoclasts and 5a from some other source. We developed a novel immunoassay specific for 5b using a monoclonal antibody O1A as capture antibody. O1A did not bind acid phosphatase derived from platelets and erythrocytes. Western analysis showed that O1A was specific for TRAP in both human bone and serum. We measured bound TRAP ac…

Effect of β-cryptoxanthin plus phytosterols on cardiovascular risk and bone turnover markers in post-menopausal women: a randomized crossover trial.

2014

Abstract Background and aim Post-menopausal women are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and bone demineralization. Phytosterols (PS) may be used for hypercholesterolemia in some groups and β-cryptoxanthin (β-Cx) displays a unique anabolic effect on bone. Our aim was to assess the changes in cardiovascular and bone turnover markers from the oral intake of β-Cx and PS in post-menopausal women. Methods and results A randomized, double-blind, crossover study with β-Cx (0.75 mg/day) and PS (1.5 g/day), single and combined, was performed in 38 postmenopausal women. Diet was supplemented with 1 × 250 mL milk-based fruit drink/day for 4 weeks with a wash-out period of 4-weeks in between. Ser…

Anthropometric parameters and permanent remission of comorbidities 10 years after open gastric bypass in a cohort with high prevalence of super-obesi…

2017

Abstract Background and aim Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is an effective treatment for weight loss in patients with morbid obesity. However, few studies have assessed its long-term efficacy in super-obese patients. The study objective was to analyse the long-term effectiveness of RYGB and its effect on improvement of comorbidities after 10 years of follow-up, and to compare the results depending on baseline BMI ( 2 vs ≥50 kg/m 2 ). Patients and methods A retrospective study was conducted in 63 patients referred for RYGB with a 10-year or longer follow-up period. Mean BMI before surgery was 55 kg/m 2 . Results Mean BMI decreased to 38.1 kg/m 2 at 10 years of follow-up. The success rates a…

Similar efficacy of low and standard doses of transdermal estradiol in controlling bone turnover in postmenopausal women

2006

To investigate the effects of a low transdermal estradiol dose on bone metabolism and to compare it with both the standard dose and absence of treatment. In this study performed in a third-level academic center, 66 healthy postmenopausal women underwent hormone therapy (HT) with patches containing estradiol at standard (0.050 mg/day, HT50, 33 women) or low dosage (0.025 mg/day, HT25, 33 women) and 70 women were without treatment (NT). The values (mean of three samples) of several bone biochemical parameters were compared between groups after adjusting for confounding factors. Bone mineral density (BMD) was assessed (by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) in the spine and hip in all cases, and …

Effects of alcohol-free beer on lipid profile and parameters of oxidative stress and inflammation in elderly women

2009

We assessed the influence of alcohol-free beer on factors implicated in atherosclerosis, such as lipid profile, oxidative stress parameters, and proinflammatory cytokines, in postmenopausal women, a population particularly at risk for atherosclerotic disease. The study was carried out in 29 nuns, 58 to 73 y old, who live in a convent with a disciplined, regular, and homogeneous lifestyle. The nuns maintained their habits and diet routine, but their meals were supplemented with 500 mL/d of alcohol-free beer (0.0%) divided into two doses over a 45-d period. Lipid profile, inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, interleukins 1 and 6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and parameters of o…

Outcomes of monopolar versus bipolar endometrial ablation on uterine bleeding and psychophysical wellbeing.

2017

Background To compare outcomes of endometrial ablation with monopolar versus bipolar resection on uterine bleeding and psychophysical wellbeing. Methods In a prospective randomized study, 100 perimenopausal patients, without desire of pregnancy and with no response to pharmacological treatment, underwent endometrial ablation from 2012 to 2014. They were randomly divided in two groups: 50 patients treated with monopolar electrode resection loop (group A) and 50 patients treated with bipolar electrode resection loop (group B). Operative parameters were immediately assessed. Menstrual outcome parameters and psycho-physical well-being parameters were evaluated after 12 months. Results No signif…

Isoflavones and cardiovascular disease

2010

The specific profile of estrogens on cardiovascular risk, with limiting action on atherogenesis but a less clear protection on cardiovascular episodes, might be improved by other agonists of the estrogen receptor, such as isoflavones. By using a systematic search based on the electronic Medline database plus a hand-search of reference lists of selected review papers, we reviewed the rapidly growing body of experimental and clinical data that, on average, follow a pattern of benefit rather similar to estrogens. Experimental models have used endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells, isolated arteries, and live animals, including monkeys. The clinical evidence arises from studies on the li…
