Influence of St John's wort on catecholamine turnover and cardiovascular regulation in humans
2004
BACKGROUND: St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a popular over-the-counter antidepressant. Its antidepressive effect has been attributed in part to inhibition of monoamine transporters and monoamine oxidase, on the basis of in vitro studies. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study, 16 healthy subjects (11 men and 5 women; mean age, 31 +/- 5 years) ingested either St John's wort (300 mg three times daily) or placebo for 7 days. Imipramine treatment (50 mg three times daily) in 7 subjects served as a positive control. After treatment, physiologic and biochemical tests included cardiovascular reflex testing, graded head-up tilt testing, and plasma catec…
Interoceptive and multimodal functions of the operculo-insular cortex: tactile, nociceptive and vestibular representations.
2013
The operculo-insular cortex has been termed the 'homeostatic control center' or 'general magnitude estimator' of the human mind. In this study, somatosensory, nociceptive and caloric vestibular stimuli were applied to reveal, whether there are mainly common, or possibly specific regions activated by one modality alone and whether lateralization effects, time pattern differences or influences of the aversive nature of the stimuli could be observed. Activation of the dorsal posterior insula was caused by all stimuli alike thus terming this area multimodal. Early phases of the noxious heat and caloric vestibular stimulation led to responses in the anterior insula. Using conjunction analyses we…
Group Versus Individual Cognitive Treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Changes in Severity at Post-Treatment and One-Year Follow-up
2009
Background: Very few studies have compared the efficacy of individual and group cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) by taking into consideration the change in OCD severity in both the short and long term. Aims: To conduct an open trial of individual versus group CBT for OCD, comparing the clinical and statistically significant changes in severity both at post-treatment and one year later. Method: Forty-two OCD subjects were assigned to individual (n = 18) or group CBT (n = 24, in four groups). Sixteen and 22 subjects completed the treatment in the individual and group conditions, respectively. The Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale w…
Postoperative pain after one-visit root-canal treatment on teeth with vital pulps: Comparison of three different obturation techniques
2011
Objectives. To investigate and compare postoperative pain after one-visit root canal treatment (RCT) on teeth with vital pulps using three different obturation techniques. Study Design. Two hundred and four patients (10 men and women) aged 12 to 77 years were randomly asDesign. Two hundred and four patients (10 men and women) aged 12 to 77 years were randomly asesign. Two hundred and four patients (10 men and women) aged 12 to 77 years were randomly assigned into three treatments groups: cold lateral compaction of gutta-percha (LC), Thermafil technique (TT), and Backfill - Thermafil obturation technique (BT). Postoperative pain was recorded on a visual analogue scale (VAS) of 0 …
Periodontal health and esthetic results in impacted teeth exposed by apically positioned flap technique.
2010
Objectives: This study evaluates the periodontal health status and the esthetic results of teeth subjected to orthodontic traction, after their exposure by an apically positioned flap. Study design: Fifteen patients were included in the study, ages between 11 and 28 years old. The fenestrated teeth and their homologous contralateral normally erupted teeth, used as control, were evaluated. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the position of the gingival margin (p = 0.005), with an average distance between cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and gingival margin of 2.47 mm (SD 1.19) in control teeth and of 1 mm (SD 1.31) in the operated teeth, and in the depth of palatal pro…
TUMORS OF THE LATERAL AND THIRD VENTRICLE
2005
Abstract OBJECTIVE: Intraventricular tumors usually are managed by approaches and microsurgical techniques that need retraction and dissection of important brain structures. Minimally invasive endoscopic procedures achieve a remarkable alternative to conventional microneurosurgical techniques. Endoscope-assisted microneurosurgery may be a minimally invasive technique with maximally effective treatment. Using the keyhole concept for planning the surgical strategy, the reduction of the brain retraction is achieved, which is one of the main benefits of this technique. METHODS: We treated 35 patients (16 female patients and 19 male patients) with tumors in the lateral (n = 8) and the third (n =…
Optical and Visual Simulation of Standard and Modified Spherical Aberration Implantable Collamer Lens Post Myopic LASIK Surgery
2013
To evaluate the visual quality achieved in patients undergoing standard or modified implantable Collamer lens (ICL) to correct residual myopic error after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery. The adaptive optics visual simulator was used to simulate LASIK surgery of moderate and high myopia with a myopic regression corrected by a standard and modified ICL. Visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS) were measured in 14 subjects at 3- and 4.5-mm pupil. Point spread function and simulated retinal images were calculated.Comparing LASIK plus standard ICL and LASIK plus modified ICL simulations, for moderate myopia, VA improvement was less than 1 line in all VA contrasts an…
Brain-core temperature of patients before and after orthotopic liver transplantation assessed by DWI thermometry
2018
To assess brain-core temperature of end-stage liver disease patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) using a temperature measurement technique based on the apparent diffusion coefficient of the cerebrospinal fluid in the lateral ventricles. The study group was composed of 19 patients with a model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score of 23.7 who underwent MR imaging before and after OLT. MR imaging studies were performed with a 1.5T MR scanner. Brain-core temperature (T: °C) was calculated using the following equation from the apparent diffusion coefficient (D) of the cerebrospinal fluid in the lateral ventricles: $$T = {{2256.74} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{2256.74} {…
Quantitative sensory testing in the German Research Network on Neuropathic Pain (DFNS): reference data for the trunk and application in patients with…
2013
Age- and gender-matched reference values are essential for the clinical use of quantitative sensory testing (QST). To extend the standard test sites for QST-according to the German Research Network on Neuropathic Pain-to the trunk, we collected QST profiles on the back in 162 healthy subjects. Sensory profiles for standard test sites were within normal interlaboratory differences. QST revealed lower sensitivity on the upper back than the hand, and higher sensitivity on the lower back than the foot, but no systematic differences between these trunk sites. Age effects were significant for most parameters. Females exhibited lower pressure pain thresholds (PPT) than males, which was the only si…
