Tutkimuksen tehtävänä on selvittää, mikä on ympäristökasvatuksen merkitys yhteiskunnan muutoksessa ympäristöystävällisempään suuntaan. Tutkimuksen näkökulma yhdistää ympäristökasvatukseen ympäristösosiologian ja kasvatussosiologian näkökulmia. Arvokasvatus nousee yhdeksi tärkeäksi aihealueeksi samoin kuin yhteiskunnan muutokseen keskittyvä kriittinen pedagogiikka.
