Effect of consumption of a carob pod inositol-enriched beverage on insulin sensitivity and inflammation in middle-aged prediabetic subjects.
2016
This study assessed the effects of an inositol-enriched beverage (IEB) on blood glucose levels and inflammation status in subjects with an impaired fasting glucose (IFG) state according to body mass index (BMI). This was a 12 week, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial employing forty-four IFG subjects (fasting glucose levels 100-125 mg dl-1) that were divided into two intervention groups: one receiving a IEB (n = 24) containing mainly pinitol (2.0 g twice a day), and the other a sweetened beverage based on sucrose (SB; n = 20). Anthropometric and biochemical measurements, postprandial and fasting nocturnal glycaemia (continuous glucose monitoring system), and inflammatory parameters (…
Measuring postural-related changes of spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity after repeated long-duration diving: Frequency domain approaches
2012
Sustained water immersion is thought to modulate orthostatic tolerance to an extent dependent on the duration and repetition over consecutive days of the diving sessions. We tested this hypothesis investigating in ten healthy subjects the potential changes in the cardiovascular response to head-up tilt induced by single and multiple resting air dives. Parametric cross-spectral analysis of spontaneous RR interval and systolic arterial pressure variability was performed in three experimental sessions: before diving (BD), after single 6-hour dive (ASD), and after multiple 6-hour dives (AMD, 5 consecutive days with 18-hour surface interval). From this analysis, baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) was …
Quadriceps Femoris Torque and EMG Activity in Seated versus Supine Position
2003
To compare voluntary and electrically evoked knee extensor torque, surface electromyography (EMG), and activation level obtained under seated versus supine position, i.e., with shortened versus lengthened rectus femoris (RF) muscle. The knee extensor torque obtained during maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and after single and paired stimuli applied at rest was measured under seated (i.e., 90 degrees hip angle) and supine (i.e., 180 degrees hip angle) conditions. The associated EMG activity from biarticular RF and monoarticular vasti was also recorded, and activation level was estimated by means of the twitch interpolation technique.Knee extensor MVC was 10.6% higher in the seated compare…
The progression of paraspinal muscle recruitment intensity in localized and global strength training exercises is not based on instability alone.
2011
Abstract Colado JC, Pablos C, Chulvi-Medrano I, Garcia-Masso X, Flandez J, Behm DG. The progression of paraspinal muscle recruitment intensity in localized and global strength training exercises is not based on instability alone. Objective To evaluate electromyographic activity of several paraspinal muscles during localized stabilizing exercises and multijoint or global stabilizing exercises. Design Cross-sectional counterbalanced repeated measures. Setting Research laboratory. Participants Volunteers (N=25) without low-back pain. Intervention Subjects performed (1) localized stabilizing exercises (callisthenic exercises with only body weight as resistance): static lumbar extension, stable …
Strength and Latency of the HP-SAP Closed Loop Variability Interactions in Subjects Prone to Develop Postural Syncope
2019
The coupling and latency between heart period (HP) and systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variability can be investigated along the two arms of the HP-SAP closed loop, namely along the baroreflex feedback from SAP to HP, and along the feedforward pathway from HP to SAP. This study investigates the HP-SAP closed loop variability interactions through cross-correlation function (CCF). Coupling strength and delay between HP and SAP variability series were monitored in 13 subjects prone to develop orthostatic syncope (SYNC, 28±9 yrs, 5 males) and in 13 subjects with no history of postural syncope (noSYNC, age: 27±8 yrs, 5 males). Analysis was carried out at rest in supine position (REST) and durin…
Endoscopic subfascial sectioning of incompetent perforating veins in treatment of primary varicosis
1992
Subfascial elimination of incompetent perforating veins is the most effective therapeutic principle in the treatment of trophic skin disorders associated with varicosis. A recently developed endoscopic technique allows accurate sectioning of perforating veins with direct observation of the veins and minor trauma. From November 1986 to July 1991 endoscopic sectioning of perforating veins was performed in 72 patients (103 legs). The most frequently transected perforating veins were Cockett's veins (n = 219), 24 cm perforating veins (n = 83), and Boyd's perforating veins (n = 82). Postoperative delayed wound healing was observed in 3 (2.9%) legs with pronounced trophic skin disorders in the lo…
Comparison of the subjective satisfaction of the donor site morbidity : free radial forearm flap versus anterolateral thigh flap for reconstruction i…
2018
Background The purpose of the study was to compare the differences of the subjective satisfaction of the donor site morbidity between the free radial forearm flap (FRFF) and anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF) for tongue reconstruction. Material and Methods One hundred and nineteen patients underwent FRFF or ALTF reconstruction were retrospectively evaluated by a standardized self-established donor site morbidity questionnaire which included 5 domains, sensibility, movement disabilities, cosmetics, social activities and general impacts on the quality of life. Results The Cronbach’s coefficient alpha of the questionnaire was 0.707. The exploratory factor analysis revealed that the 5 items of the…
Enhanced Recovery after Implementation of Surgery Protocol in Living Kidney Donors: The ISMETT Experience
2019
Abstract Introduction Laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy (LLDN) has become the standard procedure for living kidney transplantation. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal perioperative management aimed at facilitating rapid patient recovery after major surgery by modifying the response to stress induced by exposure to surgery. This association can further reduce hospital stay, surgical stress, and perioperative morbidity of living kidney donors. Material and methods In this retrospective analysis conducted at our institute, we compared the first 21 patients who underwent LLDN enrolled with the ERAS protocol with 55 patients who underwent LLDN with the fast-track protocol…
Exploring directionality in spontaneous heart period and systolic pressure variability interactions in humans: implications in the evaluation of baro…
2004
Although in physiological conditions RR interval and systolic arterial pressure (SAP) are likely to interact in a closed loop, the traditional cross-spectral analysis cannot distinguish feedback (FB) from feedforward (FF) influences. In this study, a causal approach was applied for calculating the coherence from SAP to RR ( Ks-r) and from RR to SAP ( Kr-s) and the gain and phase of the baroreflex transfer function. The method was applied, compared with the noncausal one, to RR and SAP series taken from 15 healthy young subjects in the supine position and after passive head-up tilt. For the low frequency (0.04–0.15 Hz) spectral component, the enhanced FF coupling ( Kr-s = 0.59 ± 0.21, signi…
Impact of chronic psychosocial stress on autonomic cardiovascular regulation in otherwise healthy subjects.
2005
Elevated psychosocial stress might favor the occurrence of cardiovascular disease; however, mechanisms are incompletely understood. We hypothesized that patients (n=126; 44±1 years of age) referred to an internal medicine clinic because of symptoms related to chronic psychosocial stress would demonstrate signs of autonomic dysregulation compared with controls (n=132; 42±1 years of age). We used autoregressive spectral analysis of RR interval variability to obtain indirect markers of sympathetic and of vagal (respectively, low-frequency and high-frequency components, both expressed in normalized units) oscillatory modulation of sinoatrial node, as well as of sympathetic vasomotor regulation…
