Relapse risk after autologous transplantation in patients with newly diagnosed myeloma is not related with infused tumor cell load and the outcome is…
2006
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) multicentre randomized phase III study was designed to assess the safety and efficacy of CD34+ selection in newly diagnosed myeloma patients undergoing autologous transplantation. DESIGN AND METHODS: One hundred and eleven patients responsive to initial chemotherapy were randomized to receive CD34+ selected (arm A) or unselected PBPC (arm B) after conditioning with high-dose melphalan and TBI. ASO-PCR was used to assess purging efficacy and reinfused tumor load. Tumor load could be assessed in 59 patients. RESULTS: CD34+ selection gave a median tumor cell depletion of 2.2 logs (0.77-5.96). No tumor ce…

Patient-centered outcomes after surgical treatment of peri-implantitis: a prospective clinical study.
2022
Background: Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory process affecting soft and hard tissues surrounding dental implants, causing progressive marginal bone loss. Peri-implant surgery is the treatment of choice. However, evidence about its impact on patients' quality of life (QoL) is limited. This study aimed to assess pain and QoL in the first seven post-operative days and measure patient satisfaction at the end of this period. Material and methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in patients with peri-implantitis. Patients reported pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS) ranging from 0 to 100mm every day during the first week after surgery. They then completed the OHIP-14sp questionnaire…
Intraperitoneal adhesions-an ongoing challenge between biomedical engineering and the life sciences
2011
Peritoneal adhesions remain a relevant clinical problem despite the currently available prophylactic barrier materials. So far, the physical separation of traumatized serosa areas using barriers represents the most important clinical strategy for adhesion prevention. However, the optimal material has not yet been found. Further optimization or pharmacological functionalization of these barriers could give an innovative input for peritoneal adhesion prevention. Therefore, a more complete understanding of pathogenesis is required. On the basis of the pathophysiology of adhesion formation the main barriers currently in clinical practice as well as new innovations are discussed in the present r…
Effect of preemptive analgesia with ibuprofen in the control of postoperative pain in dental implant surgeries: A randomized, triple-blind controlled…
2019
Background Preemptive analgesia has as its basic principle the administration of analgesics before the onset of painful stimuli, in order to reduce or prevent postoperative pain, but this question is little explored in implantology. Thus, this study was conducted in order to evaluate the clinical efficacy of ibuprofen in pain prevention after unit implant surgery. Material and Methods For this triple-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled and randomized clinical trial, 54 insertion surgeries of unitary implants were performed. Two groups have received two different protocols 1 hour before surgery: Ibuprofen group (IBU) 600 mg of ibuprofen; and (2) placebo group (maize starch). The intensity of…
Circulating Levels of Ferritin, RDW, PTLs as Predictive Biomarkers of Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation Risk after Cardiac Surgery in Extracorporeal …
2022
Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common arrhythmia after cardiac surgery in conventional extracorporeal circulation (CECC), with an incidence of 15–50%. The POAF pathophysiology is not known, and no blood biomarkers exist. However, an association between increased ferritin levels and increased AF risk, has been demonstrated. Based on such evidence, here, we evaluated the effectiveness of ferritin and other haematological parameters as POAF risk biomarkers in patients subjected to cardiac surgery. We enrolled 105 patients (mean age = 70.1 ± 7.1 years; 70 men and 35 females) with diverse heart pathologies and who were subjected to cardiothoracic surgery. Their blood sample…
Pacientu aprūpe pēc mikrodiskektomijas operācijas agrīnajā periodā
2016
2018
Kopsavilkums Nosaukums: Operācijas laika izvēles ietekme uz apendektomijas rezultātu Fons: Apendektomija ir viena no pasaulē visbiežāk veiktajām akūtajām ķirurģiskajām manipulācijām. Vēsturiski to veic nekavējoties un neatkarīgi no diennakts laika.
Minimally Invasive Video-Assisted Thyroidectomy: Analysis of Complications From a Systematic Review
2019
Background. Nowadays, minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT) is considered a safe and effective option. However, its complication rate has not been specifically discussed yet. The aim of this systematic review was enrolling a large number of studies to estimate early and late complications (transient and definitive, uni- and bilateral laryngeal nerve palsy; transient and definitive hypocalcemia; cervical hematoma; hypertrophic or keloid scar) of MIVAT compared with conventional technique. Methods. The review was performed according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) criteria in PubMed and Embase. Search terms were “minimally inva…
The LANN technique to reduce postoperative functional morbidity in laparoscopic radical pelvic surgery
2005
BACKGROUND: We investigated the feasibility and advantages of introducing Laparoscopic Neuro-Navigation (LANN) into the field of laparoscopic gynecologic radical pelvic surgery. STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective pilot study, 261 consecutive patients underwent laparoscopic radical pelvic surgery for cervical cancer or deep infiltrating endometriosis of the parametria. During the procedure, dissection and electrostimulation, and consequently, sparing of the pelvic parasympathetic nerves by transection of the parametria, were performed. Postoperative bladder dysfunction was documented. RESULTS: Laparoscopic dissection and electrostimulation of the pelvic splanchnic nerves were feasible in all pat…
