Mycotoxin contamination of animal feedingstuff: detoxification by gamma irradiation and reduction of aflatoxins and ochratoxin A concentrations

2014

Mycotoxins are fungal secondary metabolites identified in many agricultural products screened for toxigenic moulds. They have been reported to be carcinogenic, teratogenic, tremorogenic, haemorrhagic and dermatitic to a wide range of organisms. With the increasing stringent regulations for mycotoxins imposed by importing countries such as those of the European Union, many cereals that are not safe for human consumption are used in formulations intended for animal feed. Gamma-rays are reported in the scientific literature to destroy ochratoxin A and aflatoxin in food crops and feed. The present study provides preliminary data for establishing the effect of dose of gamma-irradiation, ranging …

Characterisation and Anaerobic Batch Degradation of Materials Accumulating in Anaerobic Digesters Treating Poultry Slaughterhouse Waste

2001

We characterised materials accumulating in two failed mesophilic semi-continuous anaerobic digesters treating poultry slaughterhouse waste and, for reference, materials in the two well-performing digesters, to find the anaerobic degradability of these materials and the factors affecting their degradation. We also studied materials accumulating and stratifying in various layers in one of the two well-performing digesters. The material from the most severely failed digesters produced methane sluggishly and did not improve appreciably even with 33 percent dilution suggesting that the recovery of failed process is slow. The methane production was apparently affected by the accumulated long-chai…

High-resolution genotyping of Campylobacter strains isolated from poultry and humans with amplified fragment length polymorphism fingerprinting.

1999

ABSTRACT For epidemiological studies of Campylobacter infections, molecular typing methods that can differentiate campylobacters at the strain level are needed. In this study we used a recently developed genotyping method, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), which is based on selective amplification of restriction fragments of chromosomal DNA, for genetic typing of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli strains derived from humans and poultry. We developed an automated AFLP fingerprinting method in which restriction endonucleases Hin dIII and Hha I were used in combination with one set of selective PCR primers. This method resulted in evenly distributed band patterns for amp…

Investigating on the environmental sustainability of organic animal products? The case of organic eggs

2020

Abstract The organic farming of laying hens is experiencing a growing trend in Italy, following an increase in consumer demand for organic eggs. The present study aimed to investigate the environmental performance of organic egg production for the first time in the Italian context. To this end, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of organic egg production in a farm rearing laying hens located in Northern Italy was performed. The analysis was carried out in a cradle to farm gate perspective, with 1 kg of eggs selected as functional unit. Primary data relating to animal performances and resources consumed was collected on site, and subsequently integrated with secondary data, including estimates …

CHARACTERIZATION OF CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF BIOCHAR FOR ENERGY PURPOSES AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION

2014

Biochar production processes as well as its various applications provide numerous benefits to both environment and economy (Lehmann et al., 2006; Basu, 2010). However, understanding the physicochemical structure of this valuable product has to be improved in order to be able to obtain the aforementioned benefits and to avoid environmental costs. In this study, chicken or poultry manure (PM) was chosen as feedstock for biochar preparation. This biomass is traditionally used by farmers as an effective organic fertilizer (Chan et al., 2008). Indeed, it is considered a valuable source for readily available plant nutrients, such as N, P, K and other micronutrients (Huang et al., 2011). Notwithst…

Combined use of modified atmosphere packaging and high pressure to extend the shelf-life of raw poultry sausage

2014

International audience; The contribution of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) in extending the shelf-life of high-pressure treated raw poultry sausages was examined by considering microbial and oxidative stability (TBARs) aspects. Raw poultry sausages packaged under air or modified atmosphere (50% CO2–50% N2) were pressurized at 500 MPa during 5 min at a maximum temperature of 10.5 °C, subsequently allowed to refrigerated storage during 22 days. During storage, samples were tested at time intervals for headspace gas composition, pH, TBARs, Aerobic Mesophilic Counts (AMC) and Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) counts. The high pressure treatment could represent an efficient means of extending the …

Role of poultry meat in a balanced diet aimed at maintaining health and wellbeing: an Italian consensus document

2015

The relationship between the consumption of meat and health is multifaceted, and it needs to be analyzed in detail, with specific attention to the relevant differences that characterize the effects of the different meat types, as yet considered by only a limited literature. A variable but moderate energy content, highly digestible proteins (with low levels of collagen) of good nutritional quality, unsaturated lipids (mainly found in the skin and easily removed), B-group vitamins (mainly thiamin, vitamin B6, and pantothenic acid), and minerals (like iron, zinc, and copper) make poultry meat a valuable food. Epidemiological studies performed across the world, in highly diverse populations wit…

Genome-wide mapping of signatures of selection using a high-density array identified candidate genes for growth traits and local adaptation in chicke…

2023

Abstract Background Availability of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping arrays and progress in statistical analyses have allowed the identification of genomic regions and genes under selection in chicken. In this study, SNP data from the 600 K Affymetrix chicken array were used to detect signatures of selection in 23 local Italian chicken populations. The populations were categorized into four groups for comparative analysis based on live weight (heavy vs light) and geographical area (Northern vs Southern Italy). Putative signatures of selection were investigated by combining three extended haplotype homozygosity (EHH) statistical approaches to quantify excess of haplotype homoz…

Food and Environment: Trace Element Content of Hen Eggs from Different Housing Types

2013

AbstractEleven trace elements (Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, V, Zn) were quantitatively determined in hen egg samples collected from different poultry housing types (large-scale poultry farms, organic farms and domestic farms) over the territory of Latvia. Samples were wet digested and quantitatively analysed by total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF). The accuracy of analytical method was verified with analysis of certified reference material NCS ZC73017 (GSB-10)-Apple. The most variable range of concentrations and the highest content of elements were determined for hen egg samples derived from organic farms, while egg samples from domestic farms and poultry farms mos…
