Powdery mildew resistance genes in Latvian barley varieties
2004
Thirty-three Latvian spring barley varieties and breeding lines and 90individual progenies from these were tested at the seedling stage for their reaction to a maximum 37 isolates of Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei. Eighteen varieties were composed of two or three lines with different resistance. TwelveMl powdery mildew resistance genes(a1, a6, a7, a8, a9, a12, a13, at, g, k1, (Kr) and La) and four Ml genes closely linked to the Mla locus [a(Al2), a(No3), a(Em2) and a(Ru3)] were found. Mla8, Mlg and Mlk1 were the most frequent genes that occurred among the tested genotypes. The results confirm the pedigrees of all genotypes apart from cv. Agra and the breeding line L-215.
Development of a Matrix-Matched Sphalerite Reference Material (MUL-ZnS-1) for Calibration of In Situ Trace Element Measurements by Laser Ablation-Ind…
2016
Sphalerite (ZnS) is an abundant ore mineral and an important carrier of elements such as Ge, Ga and In used in high-technology applications. In situ measurements of trace elements in natural sphalerite samples using LA-ICP-MS are hampered by a lack of homogenous matrix-matched sulfide reference materials available for calibration. The preparation of the MUL-ZnS1 calibration material containing the trace elements V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Tl and Pb besides Zn, Fe and S is reported. Commercially available ZnS, FeS, CdS products were used as the major components, whereas the trace elements were added by doping with single-element ICP-MS standard solutions a…
Langmuir-Blodgett Mono- and Multilayer Assemblies of Amphiphilic Liquid- Crystalline n-Alkyl-4′-n-alkoxybiphenyl-4-carboxylates. I
1991
Five n-Alkyl-4′-Alkoxy-biphenyl-4-carboxylates were investigated as Langmuir monolayers at the air/ water interface and as Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films on solid supports. All five compounds form stable monolayers at the air/water interface and can be transferred onto solid supports yielding LB-films, whose structures and kinetic behavior strongly depend on the headgroup. The structures of the LB-films were investigated by means of optical textures and X-ray diffraction and compared with the structures of the corresponding bulk phases which were investigated by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry and X-ray powder diffraction. The LB-films of the acid and the two methyl esters exhibit …
The effect of pH on polymorph formation of the pharmaceutically active compound tianeptine.
2012
The anti-depressant pharmaceutical tianeptine has been investigated to determine the dynamics of polymorph formation under various pH conditions. By varying the pH two crystalline polymorphs were isolated. The molecular and crystal structures have been determined to identify the two polymorphs. One polymorph is an amino carboxylic acid and the other polymorph is a zwitterion. In the solid state the tianeptine moieties are bonded through hydrogen bonds. The zwitterion was found to be less stable and transformed to the acid form. During this investigation an amorphous form was identified.
Different structural destinations: comparing reactions of [CuBr2(3-Brpy)2] crystals with HBr and HCl gas
2011
Reaction of green crystalline solid trans-[CuBr2(3-Brpy)2] 1 (3-Brpy = 3-bromopyridine) with HBr (aq) vapour yields brown crystalline salt (3-BrpyH)2[CuBr4] 2 with quantitative conversion. Notably 2 adopts a different crystal structure to the three mutually isostructural compounds (3-XpyH)2[CuCl4] (X = Cl, Br) and (3-BrpyH)2[CuBr2Cl2] which result from reaction with HCl. Crystalline product 2 has been characterised by X-ray powder diffraction and its conversion back to 1 at 370–400 K has been followed in situ by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Crystalline 1 and 2 are further notable for the presence of intermolecular C–Br⋯Br–Cu halogen bonds and (only in the case of 2) N–H⋯Br–Cu hydro…
The protein dynamical transition does not require the protein polypeptide chain
2011
We give experimental evidence that the main features of protein dynamics revealed by neutron scattering, i.e., the “protein dynamical transition” and the “boson peak”, do not need the protein polypeptide chain. We show that a rapid increase of hydrogen atoms fluctuations at about 220 K, analogous to the one observed in hydrated myoglobin powders, is also observed in a hydrated amino acids mixture with the chemical composition of myoglobin but lacking the polypeptide chain; in agreement with the protein behavior, the transition is abolished in the dry mixture. Further, an excess of low-frequency vibrational modes around 3 meV, typically observed in protein powders, is also observed in our mi…
Synthesis, characterization and thermal properties of small R2R′2N+X−-type quaternary ammonium halides
2005
Twenty-one R {sub 2} R {sup '} {sub 2}N{sup +} X {sup -} -type (R=methyl or ethyl, R {sup '}=alkyl, X=Br or I) quaternary ammonium (QA) halides have been prepared by using a novel one-pot synthetic route in which a formamide (dimethyl-, diethylformamide, etc.) is treated with alkyl halide in the presence of sodium or potassium carbonate. The formation of QA halides was verified with {sup 1}H-NMR, {sup 13}C-NMR, MS and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of four QA halides (two bromide and two iodide) were determined using X-ray single crystal diffraction, and the powder diffraction method was used to study the structural similarities between the single crystal and microcrystalline bu…
Open Cell Al-Si Foams by a Sintering and Dissolution Process
2014
Open cell foams from AlSi12 alloy were successfully fabricated by the Sintering and Dissolution Process, using NaCl as space holder (60 %). The size of the aluminum alloy powder is less than 45 μm, while the space holder powder size is 315-500 μm, 630-800 μm and 800-1250 μm respectively. The appropriate quantities of alloy powder and salt were mixed and cold pressed at 250 MPa. The sintering process was done at 500 °C and 545 °C, in vacuum (10-5 torr) for 10, 20 and 30 minutes respectively. The space holder was eliminated by holding the sintered samples in running hot water (70 °C). After the salt was dissolved, the samples were dried and the mass loss was analyzed. Keywords: Aluminum foam…
Phases and phase transitions of (NaCl)1?x(NaCN)x
1985
(NaCl)1−x(NaCN)x mixed crystals with CN-concentrationsx of 0.87, 0.76, 0.71 and 0.65 have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Apart from the cubic room temperature phase, a rhombohedral and an orthorhombic phase have been identified. In addition a glass state has been observed which is characterized by a strong broadening of the cubic powder lines. The phase diagram shows a wide coexistence gap between the non-cubic phases and the glass state.
A Mixed-Ligand Approach for Spin-Crossover Modulation in a Linear FeII Coordination Polymer
2014
In this work, we present a family of Fe(II) coordination polymers of general formula [Fe(btzx)(3-3x)(btix)(3x)](ClO4)2 with interesting spin-crossover properties. These coordination polymers have been synthesized using chemical mixtures of two different but closely related ligands, 1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (btzx) and 1,4-bis(triazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (btix), and the effect of a gradual substitution of the ligand in the spin transition temperature has been investigated. Several chemical mixtures have been structurally characterized by X-ray powder diffraction indicating a clear critical amount in the composition of the mixture after which mixed phases rather than a single phase c…
