Diffusive Behavior and the Modeling of Characteristic Times in Limit Order Executions

2007

We present a study of the order book data of the London Stock Exchange for five highly liquid stocks traded during the calendar year 2002. Specifically, we study the first passage time of order book prices needed to observe a prescribed price change Delta, the time to fill (TTF) for executed limit orders and the time to cancel (TTC) for canceled ones. We find that the distribution of the first passage time decays asymptotically in time as a power law with an exponent L_FPT ~ 1.5. The median of the same quantity scales as Delta^1.6, which is different from the Delta^2 behavior expected for Brownian motion. The quantities TTF, and TTC are also asymptotically power law distributed with exponen…

Dynamic anomaly in the glass transition region of orthoterphenyl

1991

We report on incoherent and coherent neutron scattering results in the supercooled liquid and the glassy regime of the van der Waals fluido-terphenyl using the backscattering and spin echo technique, respectively. A critical comparison of both techniques is presented. The data are analysed in the time domain assuming that microscopic correlation times (τ) scale with the viscosity η according to τ(T)∼η(T)/T. With this assumption we obtain an agreement with several predictions of mode coupling theory: the existence of a critical temperatureT c is shown, independently for both incoherent and coherent data, by a cusp in the temperature dependence of the Debye-Waller factorf Q (T). BelowT c fQ(T…

Ripening-dominated crystallization in polydisperse hard-sphere-like colloids

2009

We report on the crystal growth scenario in gravity-matched, polydisperse hard-sphere-like colloids at increasing particle concentration. In the fluid-crystal coexistence region, the crystal size as a function of time shows two separate regimes corresponding to crystal growth and crystal ripening. At higher supersaturation the crystal size grows according to the same power law through the whole experimental window of a few days: crystal growth and ripening merge together. We show that our observations cannot be explained by considering the slowing down of single-particle dynamics due to increasing volume fraction. We suggest that size fractionation occurring at the crystal-fluid interface i…

Power laws and crossovers in off-critical surface-directed spinodal decomposition.

2000

We study the dynamics of phase separation in binary mixtures near a surface with a preferential attraction for one of the components of the mixture. We obtain detailed numerical results for a range of mixture compositions. In the case where the minority component is attracted to the surface, wetting layer growth is characterized by a crossover from a surface-potential-dependent growth law to a universal law. We formulate a simple phenomenological model to explain our numerical results.

Estimation of annual energy output of a wind turbine using wind speed probability distribution

2016

In this work, annual energy output of a variable speed wind turbine is analyzed using annual Weibull wind speed probability distribution function. The power coefficient variation with tip speed ratio in torque control region as well as pitch angle variation for maximum power output from wind turbine are analyzed for identifying control system parameters. The wind turbine power output and variation of power coefficient with tip speed ratio as well as pitch angle are examined / reported using annual Weibull distribution function. Finally the variation of the estimated annual energy output of the given wind turbine with the mean wind speed is presented.

Free energy and states of fractional-order hereditariness

2014

AbstractComplex materials, often encountered in recent engineering and material sciences applications, show no complete separations between solid and fluid phases. This aspect is reflected in the continuous relaxation time spectra recorded in cyclic load tests. As a consequence the material free energy cannot be defined in a unique manner yielding a significative lack of knowledge of the maximum recoverable work that can extracted from the material. The non-uniqueness of the free energy function is removed in the paper for power-laws relaxation/creep function by using a recently proposed mechanical analogue to fractional-order hereditariness.

The 'power' of tourism in Portugal

2012

The author analyses the upper tail of the distribution of tourism supply in Portugal from 2002 to 2009, using data from the Instituto Nacional de Estatística database. Tourism supply is defined in terms of the lodging capacity of hotel establishments in about 250 tourist destinations. The paper shows that the empirical distribution of tourism supply in Portugal is heavy-tailed and consistent with a power law behaviour in its upper tail. Such behaviour seems to be stable over the years, provided that, for the time horizon covered by the data sets, the scaling parameter is always close to the value of two. The power law hypothesis is tested positively through the use of graphical and analyti…

Observation of the suppression of the flux of cosmic rays above 4x10^19eV

2008

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays above 2.5 × 10¹⁸ eV, derived from 20,000 events recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory, is described. The spectral index γ of the particle flux, J ∝ E-γ, at energies between 4 × 10¹⁸ eV and 4 × 10¹⁹ eV is 2.69 ± 0.02(stat) ± 0.06(syst), steepening to 4.2 ± 0.4(stat) ± 0.06(syst) at higher energies. The hypothesis of a single power law is rejected with a significance greater than 6 standard deviations. The data are consistent with the prediction by Greisen and by Zatsepin and Kuz'min.

Effects of the air density value on a wind generator electricity production capability

2016

The paper main issue is the evaluation of the influence of the air density value on the electricity production capability of a wind generator. Two different density air mathematical models, where the density has not a constant value, are here taken into account and compared in terms of reliability, accuracy and computational burden. Evaluations are carried out thanks to a horizontal axis wind generator full model built by the Authors in Matlab/Simulink environment. Simulation results are compared with real data.
