Where lol is: function and position of lol used as a discourse marker in YouTube comments

Lol is probably one of the most popular words in computer-mediated communication. It is generally taken to be the acronym of “laughing out loud”, but it is not always used to indicate a humorous response; rather, it is multifunctional. Drawing on previous studies of the different functions of lol, this paper explores a possible correlation between the position and function of non-lexicalized lol in the specific context of YouTube comments. The hypothesis is that the function of lol largely depends on its position: clause-initial lol is not used with the same functions as clause-final lol. Abstract Bald-faced lies are utterances that seem to lack the intent of the speaker to deceive the hearer, which is usually assumed in the definition of proper lying. Therefore, the so-called non-deceptionists call the latter assumption into question. The so-called deceptionists, sticking to the traditional definition of lying, argue in turn that bald-faced lies either are no real lies or are connected to an intention to deceive. Metaphor is considered a figurative use of language, a term that seems to recall the imagistic dimension characterizing this kind of utterances. Tzvetan Todorov (1967) speaks of “figure” as “visibility of speech”: as a figure, metaphor provides a kind of figurability to what is communicated. As Paul Ricoeur wrote in La métaphore vive (Ricoeur, 1975), metaphor makes “speech appear”. En el presente trabajo se ha llevado a cabo un estudio de la atenuación pragmática a partir del análisis de un corpus de muestras escritas que recogen una actividad de simulación o role-playpropuesta a estudiantes adolescentes (15-18 años): la escritura de un WhatsApp en la que se rechaza una invitación. El uso de un grupo de grabaciones de hablantes afásicos perteneciente al corpus PerLA (Percepción, lenguaje y afasia), se analiza para ver cómo estos hablantes formulan y desarrollan los textos narrativos.
