In vivo histology of Barrett's esophagus and associated neoplasia by confocal laser endomicroscopy.

2006

Background & Aims: Confocal laser endomicroscopy allows subsurface analysis of the intestinal mucosa and in vivo histology during ongoing endoscopy. Here, we have applied this technique to the in vivo diagnosis of Barrett's epithelium and associated neoplasia. Methods: Fluorescein-aided endomicroscopy was performed by applying the endomicroscope over the whole columnar-lined lower esophagus. Images obtained within 1 cm of the columnar-lined lower esophagus were stored digitally and a targeted biopsy examination or endoscopic mucosal resection of the examined areas was performed. In vivo histology was compared with the histologic specimens. All digitally stored images were re-assessed by a b…

Diagnostic value of CD34 immunostaining in desmoplastic trichilemmoma.

1998

Desmoplastic trichilemmoma (DT) is a variant of trichilemmoma, characterized by a central prominent desmoplastic component which may simulate invasive carcinoma. We have studied the morphologic and immunohistochemical features of seven cases of DT. Immunohistochemistry was performed on paraffin sections using monoclonal antibodies to CD34 (QBEND/10), vimentin and GCDFP-15. CD34 was also tested in seven cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), three with outer root sheath differentiation and four with morphea-form features, and five squamous cell carcinomas. Histologically, features of conventional trichilemmoma were seen at the periphery of the seven lesions. In contrast, at the center, the epi…

Association of elevated phospho-tau levels with alzheimer-typical 18F-Fluoro-2-Deoxy-D-Glucose positron emission tomography findings in patients with…

2003

Abstract Background Mild cognitive impairment is considered to be a transitional stage between normal aging and dementia. Phosphorylated tau protein in cerebrospinal fluid and even more decrements of cerebral glucose metabolism in parietal, temporal, or cingulate regions have shown favorable specificity for the diagnosis of Alzheimer dementia and could be useful supplementary tools to determine Alzheimer pathology in early stages. Methods We measured cerebrospinal fluid tau phosphorylated at threonine 181 protein, cerebrospinal fluid total tau, and cerebral glucose metabolism using 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography in 16 patients with mild cognitive impairment and ag…

14-3-3 in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with variant and sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease measured using capture assay able to detect low lev…

2002

Abstract A protein capture assay was used to measure 14-3-3 (γ-isoform) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with either variant or sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD). The results were compared with those obtained using Western blotting. Elevated levels of 14-3-3γ were found in 58% of variant CJD (vCJD) patients and 82% of sporadic CJD (spCJD) patients using the protein capture assay. Using a Western blotting technique, the presence of CSF 14-3-3γ was detected in 58% of vCJD patients and in 89% of spCJD patients. When the results from the protein capture assay and the Western blot were combined, 14-3-3γ was detected in 77% of vCJD patients and in 91% of spCJD patients. These r…

Decreased Paraoxonase-2 Expression in Human Carotids During the Progression of Atherosclerosis

2008

Objective— Many gene products involved in oxidation and inflammation are implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We investigated paraoxonase 2 (PON2), 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), and 5-LO activating protein (FLAP) expression and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in carotid lesions to assess their involvement in plaque formation. Methods and Results— We measured gene expression and MDA levels in atherosclerotic plaques from 59 patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy, and in plaque-adjacent tissue from 41/59 patients. Twenty-three fetal carotids and 6 mammary arteries were also investigated. Real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry revealed decreased PON2 expression i…

EAU Guidelines on Vesicoureteral Reflux in Children

2012

Context: Primary vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a common congenital urinary tract abnormality in children. There is considerable controversy regarding its management. Preservation of kidney function is the main goal of treatment, which necessitates identification of patients requiring early intervention. Objective: To present a management approach for VUR based on early risk assessment.Evidence acquisition: A literature search was performed and the data reviewed. From selected papers, data were extracted and analyzed with a focus on risk stratification. The authors recognize that there are limited high-level data on which to base unequivocal recommendations, necessitating a revisiting of thi…

Cognitive impairment and its relation with disease measures in mildly disabled patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: baseline results…

2009

Background Cognitive impairment is a common symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS), but the association between cognitive impairment and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) disease measures in patients with relapsing–remitting (RR) MS is unclear. Objectives To study the prevalence of cognitive impairment and its relation with MRI disease measures in mildly disabled patients with RRMS. Methods Patients aged 18–50 years with RRMS (McDonald criteria) and an Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score ≤4.0, who were enrolled in the Cognitive Impairment in Multiple Sclerosis (COGIMUS) study, underwent baseline standardized MRI complete neurological examination and neuropsychological testing. Results…

Customized and non-customized live-born birth-weight curves of single and uncomplicated pregnancies from the Burgundy perinatal network. Part I – met…

2017

International audience; Objectives: To establish non-customized and customized birth-weight curves of single and uncomplicated pregnancies according to gestational age.Materials and methods: We used data for 64,173 mother-infants pairs from the Burgundy perinatal network database (France) over the period 2005-2013. A validated procedure was used to link mothers with their newborns, and maternal and fetal pathologies likely to affect birth weight were excluded. Multiple regression analysis with covariate selection was used to build a customized growth curve with maternal and fetal parameters. Results: Using this methodology, three different curves were generated: an unadjusted curve for birth…

Intrauterine growth restriction and congenital malformations: a retrospective epidemiological study

2013

Background: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and small for gestational age (SGA) birth have been considered possible indicators of the presence of malformations. The aim of this study is to evaluate such relationships in a population of newborns, along with other epidemiological and auxological parameters, in particular the ponderal index (PI). Methods: We analyzed the birth data of 1093 infants, classified according to weight for gestational age as SGA, appropriate for gestational age (AGA) or large for gestational age (LGA). The prevalence of malformations was analyzed in relation to weight percentile at birth and SGA birth, maternal smoking, pregnancy diseases and PI. Results: Our …

Positive Predictive Value of French Hospitalization Discharge Codes for Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack.

2015

Background: We aimed at measuring the positive predictive value (PPV) of data in the French Hospital Medical Information Database (FHD). Summary: This retrospective multicenter study included 31 hospitals from where 56 hospital stays were randomly selected among all hospitalizations for the years 2009 and 2010 with at least 1 principal diagnosis of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Three algorithms were evaluated. Algorithm 1 selected discharge abstracts with at least 1 principal diagnosis identified by one of the relevant International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision codes. Algorithm 2 selected s…
