Diffeomorphisms, Noether charges, and the canonical formalism in two-dimensional dilaton gravity

1995

We carry out a parallel study of the covariant phase space and the conservation laws of local symmetries in two-dimensional dilaton gravity. Our analysis is based on the fact that the Lagrangian can be brought to a form that vanishes on-shell giving rise to a well-defined covariant potential for the symplectic current. We explicitly compute the symplectic structure and its potential and show that the requirement to be finite and independent of the Cauchy surface restricts the asymptotic symmetries.

A noodle, hockey stick, and spaghetti plate: a perspective on high‐resolution paleoclimatology

2010

The high-resolution reconstruction of hemispheric-scale temperature variation over the past-millennium benchmarks recent warming against more naturally driven climate episodes, such as the Little Ice Age and the Medieval Warm Period, thereby allowing assessment of the relative efficacies of natural and anthropogenic forcing factors. Icons of past temperature variability, as featured in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports over nearly two decades, have changed from a schematic sketch in 1990, to a seemingly well-solved story in 2001, to more explicit recognition of significant uncertainties in 2007. In this article, we detail the beginning of the movement to reconstru…

Dance to your own drum: Identification of musical genre and individual dancer from motion capture using machine learning

2020

Machine learning has been used to accurately classify musical genre using features derived from audio signals. Musical genre, as well as lower-level audio features of music, have also been shown to...

Metodi per la ricostruzione virtuale e la visualizzazione di opere d'architettura perdute

2022

Digital technologies for architecture representation have strongly modified uses and rules inherited from a millennial tradition. In the initial development period CAD tools worked as electronic drafting machines and digital drawings were almost similar to hand-made drawings; plans, fronts, sections and the like. In this period perspective and axonometric drawings were rarely executed because architects realized that these drawings had to be substituted by 3D digital models views, but modeling tools were not so familiar to professionals, both for software and hardware limitations. The evolution of architecture digital representation is still in progress, but it is possible to outline a prec…

AUGMENTED REALITY

2012

Already used in very specific areas such as in military and medical or academic research, in 2009 thanks to improved technology, augmented reality is to reach wider audiences and as information campaigns, advertising-augmented published in newspapers or on the network, and through a growing number of applications for mobile phones, particularly iPhone. The Augmented Reality on the desktop computer is based on the use of markers, or ARtags, and stylized drawings, which are shown to the webcam, are recognized by the PC, and which are overlaid in real-time multimedia content: video, audio, 3D objects, and other information like link, historical or/and geographical elements, relationship betwee…

Experimental confirmation of the 'protein traffic hypothesis' by routine diagnostic tests

2010

The 'protein traffic hypothesis' suggests that the inflammation associated with autoimmune disease, trauma and disturbances of blood circulation is the result of misguided protein trafficking. The hypothesis divides the antigen spectrum into an intracellular component and an extracellular component. While the intracellular component is recognised by MHC class-I molecules and is presented to CD8 T-lymphocytes, the extracellular component is recognised by MHC class-II molecules and is presented to CD4 T-lymphocytes. To test this hypothesis, CD4 and CD8 T-cell counts of 271 HIV-negative patients of the University Hospital, Mainz, Germany were examined retrospectively. The results corroborate t…

TGF-β signalling is required for CD4⁺ T cell homeostasis but dispensable for regulatory T cell function.

2013

Signalling by the cytokine TGF-β regulates mature CD4+ T cell populations but is not involved in the survival and function of regulatory T cells.

LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints and its applications.

2014

How to select and weigh features has always been a difficult problem in many image processing and pattern recognition applications. A data-dependent distance measure can address this problem to a certain extent, and therefore an accurate and efficient metric learning becomes necessary. In this paper, we propose a LogDet divergence-based metric learning with triplet constraints (LDMLT) approach, which can learn Mahalanobis distance metric accurately and efficiently. First of all, we demonstrate the good properties of triplet constraints and apply it in LogDet divergence-based metric learning model. Then, to deal with high-dimensional data, we apply a compressed representation method to learn…
