Early detection of contamination and defect in foodstuffs by electronic nose: A review

Abstract Electronic nose (e-nose) has emerged as a potential instrument in various areas of food safety assessment for rapid early detection of contamination and defect in food production chain. E-nose is an innovative measurement system designed for detecting and discriminating complex odors through mimicking the working mechanism and the principal building blocks of the mammalian olfactory system. This paper describes a literature update of the applications of the e-nose for ensuring health and safety in the food industry. Finally, its future trend, perspectives and challenging problem are also mentioned.

Inequalities in mortality in small areas of eleven Spanish cities (the multicenter MEDEA project)

The objectives of this study are to identify inequalities in mortality among census tracts of 11 Spanish cities in the period 1996-2003 and to analyse the relationship between these geographical inequalities and socioeconomic deprivation. It is a cross-sectional ecological study where the units of analysis are census tracts. We obtained an index of socioeconomic deprivation and estimated SMR by each census tract using hierarchical Bayesian models which take into account the spatial structure. In the majority of the cities geographical patterns in total mortality were found in both sexes, which were similar to those for the index of socioeconomic deprivation. Atmospheric radiative transfer models (RTMs) simulate the light propagation in the Earth's atmosphere. With the evolution of RTMs, their increase in complexity makes them impractical in routine processing such as atmospheric correction. To overcome their computational burden, standard practice is to interpolate a multidimensional lookup table (LUT) of prestored simulations. In Part I of the present work, the theoretical aspects of a proposed procedure to determine the expected principal stress directions under multiaxial random loading have been discussed. This procedure consists of averaging the instantaneous values of the three Euler angles through weight functions. In Part II here, a numerical simulation is presented to illustrate the above theoretical method. As an example, the algorithm proposed is applied to some experimental biaxial in- and out-of-phase stress states to assess the correlation between the expected principal stress directions and the position of the experimental fatigue fracture plane for such tests.

Small family business performance: comparison between family and non-family enterprises

This study compares small family business performance between the Finnish family and non-family enterprises. The sample (2,004 firms) was derived to represent nationally small businesses, in collaboration with the Statistics Finland (Centre) in Helsinki. The answer rate of the study was 90% (data collected by mail questionnaires and telephone interviews). The method of the study was to compare family and non-family enterprises with ROA (return on assets) on an enterprise population level (Finland).
