Industrialization Strategies and Regional Actors

Against the backdrop of the partly normative, partly empirical policy framework, the major regional industrial policy documents of the African Union, EAC, ECOWAS, SACU and SADC are examined as to their applicability. The empirical cases of the West African dairy and textile value chains are used to discuss the difficulties of regional priority-setting. The precise roles of (a) regional financial institutions, (b) regional development aid, including the panoply of ‘private sector development’ (PSD) projects and (c) regional business associations are defined. A concise summary of the essentials of common industrial policy concludes the chapter.
FINLAND: The Importance of the Private Sport Sector Has Increased in the 2000s

The voluntary sector and the public sector continue to be the main actors in the Finnish sport system; however, in the last decades their importance has declined. Along with the economic downturn, the number of services offered in the public sector has been reduced, and the nature of volunteering has also changed. Voluntary work has received market-based and consumer-like features. Services previously produced by volunteers are currently settled by payments. Owing to changes in the voluntary sector and in the public sector, the importance of the private sector has increased in the 2000s.

Innovation and creativity in the automobile industry: environmental proposals and initiatives

Environmental issues are demanding deep changes, both by governments as well as by the private sector through strategic management, across all sectors. This is particularly the case in the automotive services sector, where the need to reduce CO2 emissions has become a central target. In this paper, the researchers seek to evaluate these innovative initiatives. For this purpose, the main tax measures are analysed as well as the strategies being developed by automobile companies in the context of the European Union in general and Spain in particular. It is found that different public policies and managerial initiatives are being used to achieve this goal.

Factors associated with innovative climate: what is the role of stress?

We explored the role of occupational stress as a potential determinant of innovative climate by using samples of employees from health care organizations and from enterprises in the metal and retail industries (total N=1767). Factor analyses of the responses to a questionnaire suggested that stress represents a distinguishable element independent of other correlates of innovative climate, including, for example, goal clarity, sufficiency of feedback and communication. In multiple regression analyses, high stress was associated with poor innovative climate but did not moderate the effects of other correlates on innovativeness.
