The relationship between adipokines and the onset of type 2 diabetes in middle-aged men: The PRIME study

2016

Abstract Aims Epidemiological evidence suggests that adipokines may be associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes, but the evidence to date is limited and inconclusive. This study examined the association between adiponectin and leptin and the subsequent diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in a UK population based cohort of non-diabetic middle-aged men. Methods Baseline serum levels of leptin and adiponectin were measured in 1839 non-diabetic men aged 50–60 years who were participating in the prospective population-based PRIME study. Over a mean follow-up of 14.7 years, new cases of type 2 diabetes were determined from self-reported clinical information with subsequent validation by general prac…

Predictors of leptin concentration and association with cardiovascular risk in patients with coronary artery disease: results from the AtheroGene stu…

2016

AbstractContext: Leptin is produced in white adipose tissue, but also in human coronary atherosclerotic lesions. Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the prognostic value of leptin in patients with proven coronary artery disease (CAD) (N = 1907).Methods: AtheroGene is a contemporary CAD cohort study (N = 3229). Median follow-up time was 3.8 (Quartile 1/3 with 2.8/4.9) years. Results: Leptin concentration was associated with a hazard ratio (HR) for the fully adjusted model of HR = 1.32 in women but was not significant in men. The endpoint cardiovascular death and non-fatal myocardial infarction was observed in 167 patients. Conclusion: In women with known CAD, increased leptin concentr…

Titanium and zirconium complexes that contain a tridentate bis(phenolato) ligand of the [OOO]-type

2003

Abstract The oxygen-linked bis(phenol) 2-oxapropanediyl-1,3-bis(2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol), [OOO]H2, was prepared in good yield by the condensation of 2-tert-butyl-6-hydroxymethyl-4-methylphenol at 155 °C. This bis(phenol) reacted cleanly with titanium tetrachloride to give the orange titanium dichloro complex [OOO]TiCl2 in virtually quantitative yield. The solubility in pentane indicates a monomeric structure for [OOO]TiCl2 in solution. The reaction of titanium tetra(isopropoxide) gave the di(isopropoxy) complex [OOO]Ti(OiPr)2 which also adopts a monomeric structure of C2v-symmetry in solution. The reaction of the dichloro complex [OOO]TiCl2 with benzyl Grignard reagent in diethyl ether …

Gettare, con l’acqua sporca (vari segni diacritici, διακριτικά), anche il bambino (lo spirito aspro, δασεία)

2010

The author agrees with the spelling reform for Modern Greek introduced in 1984 in all respects, except as regards spiritus asper (δασεία). The fact is that the latter sign, in addition to rendering comprehensible aspiration phenomena still present in modern words (per es. πενθ-ήμερο, ὑφ-ηγητής, ἀφ-ήλιο), would be an effective guide to foreign words of Greek origin (e.g. English hypocrisy, homonymy, hygiene, German Hypokrisie, Homonymie, Hygiene, French hypocrisie, homonymie, hygiène, Spanish hipocresia, homonimia, higiene). One thus gets the impression that, so to speak, “the baby has been thrown out with the bathwater”. As a final consideration, in Italian practice relating to ancient Gree…

“Etymologia Est Origo Vocabulorum…”

1985

SUMMARYThe study wants to contribute to the explication of Isidore of Sevilla's conception of etymology starting with the definition "Etymologia est origo vocabulorum, cum vis verbi vel nominis per interpretationem colligitur" (Etym. I, xxix, 1). At first sight the problem of interpretation results from the contradiction between the static character of the principal clause (est origo) and the dynamic character of the subordinate clause (colligitur). This contradiction is resolved in favour of the dynamic aspect by changing origo into originatio on the basis of a teleological and historical interpretation. In a second step, an attempt has been made to arrive at a comprehensive assessment of …

Fingimientos y atenuación en el uso de "creo"

2018

The article analyses the development of attenuation functions in different uses of creo in colloquial conversations. This propositional attitude verb, the most polysemic and polyfunctional one in its category, has been traditionally considered an attenuating device because it can be used by speakers to convey distancing from their message. However, the fact that it is a subjectifier in its first person form could be understood as a contradiction with its function being primarily attenuating. This paper explores the semantic and pragmatic values of the different uses of creo in order to determine what triggers attenuation. 215 examples from two conversational corpora, VAL.ES.CO. 2002 and VAL…

Spelling out consequences : conditional constructions as a means to resist proposals in organisational planning process

2016

Organisational planning processes often materialise as a series of meetings, where the future of the organisation is jointly discussed and negotiated as a part of local decision-making sequences. Using conversation and discourse analytical approaches, this article investigates how proposals concerning the future can also be resisted by employing a specific device, a conditional construction ( if X, then Y). The data for the study originate from a city organisation, whose customer services are being developed. The results show how the conditional constructions work in two interrelated ways. First, by introducing a problematic hypothetical situation, they outline the undesirable consequences…

Immune-mediated change in the expression of a sexual trait predicts offspring survival in the wild.

2011

9 pages; International audience; BACKGROUND: The "good genes" theory of sexual selection postulates that females choose mates that will improve their offspring's fitness through the inheritance of paternal genes. In spite of the attention that this hypothesis has given rise to, the empirical evidence remains sparse, mostly because of the difficulties of controlling for the many environmental factors that may covary with both the paternal phenotype and offspring fitness. Here, we tested the hypothesis that offspring sired by males of a preferred phenotype should have better survival in an endangered bird, the houbara bustard (Chlamydotis undulata undulata). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We…
