Heavy-tail properties of relaxation time distributions underlying the Havriliak–Negami and the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts relaxation patterns

Abstract A detailed discussion of asymptotic properties of the Havriliak–Negami and the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts relaxation time distributions is presented. The heavy-tail property of the Havriliak–Negami relaxation time distribution, leading to the infinite mean relaxation time, is discussed. In contrast, the existence of the finite mean relaxation time for the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts response is shown. The discussion of the Cole–Davidson and the Cole–Cole cases is also included. Using the Tauberian theorems we show that these properties are determined directly by the asymptotic behavior of the considered empirical functions.

Analysis of the finite difference time domain technique to solve the Schrödinger equation for quantum devices

An extension of the finite difference time domain is applied to solve the Schrödinger equation. A systematic analysis of stability and convergence of this technique is carried out in this article. The numerical scheme used to solve the Schrödinger equation differs from the scheme found in electromagnetics. Also, the unit cell employed to model quantum devices is different from the Yee cell used by the electrical engineering community. A bound for the time step is derived to ensure stability. Magnus expansion and the two-neutrino oscillations in matter

We show that the Magnus expansion can help to deal with the problem of matter-neutrino oscillations in the nonadiabatic regime of the two-neutrino-flavor case. An analytic result for the electron-neutrino survival probability is derived in a quite simple way without reference to any particular electron density.

Spectroscopic data, spin-orbit functions, and revised analysis of strong perturbative interactions for theA 1Σ+andb 3Πstates of RbCs

The current interest in producing ultracold RbCs molecules by optical excitation from weakly bound Feshbach resonances and stimulated decay to the absolute ground state requires detailed analyses of the intermediate excited states. In this study, we present two sets of experimental Fourier-transform spectroscopic data of the $A{ }^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$-$b{ }^{3}\ensuremath{\Pi}$ complex. The $A$-$b$ mixed vibrational levels are the most likely candidates to be intermediates in the molecular formation. The more recent and more accurate data set is from mixed $A$-$b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X$ transitions, while the second is derived in large part from $(4){ }^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{…

Monitoring the stability of thin and medium back-up filters of the Newton-XMM EPIC camera

We are conducting a measurement program on back-up filters of the XMM-Newton EPIC camera aimed at monitoring possible aging effects during the mission lifetime. One thin and one medium EPIC back-up filters have been stored since 1997 in an environment similar to that one of the flight filters (dry nitrogen box before launch, high vacuum after launch). The transmission of the two filters has been measured periodically in the 1900-10000 angstrom wavelength range where effects of aging would be clearly evident. Dynamics of a FitzHugh-Nagumo system subjected to autocorrelated noise

We analyze the dynamics of the FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) model in the presence of colored noise and a periodic signal. Two cases are considered: (i) the dynamics of the membrane potential is affected by the noise, (ii) the slow dynamics of the recovery variable is subject to noise. We investigate the role of the colored noise on the neuron dynamics by the mean response time (MRT) of the neuron. We find meaningful modifications of the resonant activation (RA) and noise enhanced stability (NES) phenomena due to the correlation time of the noise. On the Frequency Behaviour, Stability and Isolation Properties of Dry Friction Oscillators

This paper proposes a new approach to the frequency responses of one-degree-of-freedom oscillators subject to periodic excitations in presence of mixed dry-viscous friction. The idea is to get free from the analysis of one fixed system by letting the physical parameters cover their own whole ranges and investigating the various behavioural aspects of wide classes of oscillators. Stability of the intrinsic energy vanishing in the Schwarzschild metric under a slow rotation

The linearized Kerr metric is considered and put in some Gauss coordinates which are further {\em intrinsic} ones. The linear and angular 4-momenta of this metric are calculated in these coordinates and the resulting value is just zero. Thus, the global vanishing previously found for the Schwarzschild metric remains linearly stable under slow rotational perturbations of this metric.
