Experimental investigation of resonant activation

2000

We experimentally investigate the escape from a metastable state over a fluctuating barrier of a physical system. The system is switching between two states under electronic control of a dichotomous noise. We measure the escape time and its probability density function as a function of the correlation rate of the dichotomous noise in a frequency interval spanning more than 4 frequency decades. We observe resonant activation, namely a minimum of the average escape time as a function of the correlation rate. We detect two regimes in the study of the shape of the escape time probability distribution: (i) a regime of exponential and (ii) a regime of non-exponential probability distribution.

Dynamically Stable Ergostars Exist: General Relativistic Models and Simulations

2019

We construct the first dynamically stable ergostars (equilibrium neutron stars that contain an ergoregion) for a compressible, causal equation of state. We demonstrate their stability by evolving both strict and perturbed equilibrium configurations in full general relativity for over a hundred dynamical timescales ($\gtrsim 30$ rotational periods) and observing their stationary behavior. This stability is in contrast to earlier models which prove radially unstable to collapse. Our solutions are highly differentially rotating hypermassive neutron stars with a corresponding spherical compaction of $C=0.3$. Such ergostars can provide new insights into the geometry of spacetimes around highly c…

Jet stability, dynamics and energy transport

2011

Relativistic jets carry energy and particles from compact to very large scales compared with their initial radius. This is possible due to their remarkable collimation despite their intrinsic unstable nature. In this contribution, I review the state-of-the-art of our knowledge on instabilities growing in those jets and several stabilising mechanisms that may give an answer to the question of the stability of jets. In particular, during the last years we have learned that the limit imposed by the speed of light sets a maximum amplitude to the instabilities, contrary to the case of classical jets. On top of this stabilising mechanism, the fast growth of unstable modes with small wavelengths p…

Flavor of cosmic neutrinos preserved by ultralight dark matter

2019

Within the standard propagation scenario, the flavor ratios of high-energy cosmic neutrinos at neutrino telescopes are expected to be around the democratic benchmark resulting from hadronic sources, $\left( 1 : 1 : 1 \right)_\oplus$. We show how the coupling of neutrinos to an ultralight dark matter complex scalar field would induce an effective neutrino mass that could lead to adiabatic neutrino propagation. This would result in the preservation at the detector of the production flavor composition of neutrinos at sources. This effect could lead to flavor ratios at detectors well outside the range predicted by the standard scenario of averaged oscillations. We also present an electroweak-in…

Kinetically Modified Non-Minimal Chaotic Inflation

2015

We consider Supersymmetric (SUSY) and non-SUSY models of chaotic inflation based on the phi^n potential with 2<=n<=6. We show that the coexistence of a nonminimal coupling to gravity, fR=1+cR phi^(n/2), with a kinetic mixing of the form fK=cK fR^m can accommodate values of the spectral index, ns, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, favored by the Bicep2/Keck Array and Planck results for 0<=m<=4 and 2.5x10^(-4)<=rRK=cR/cK^{n/4}<=1, where the upper limit is not imposed for n=2. Inflation can be attained for subplanckian inflaton values with the corresponding effective theories retaining the perturbative unitarity up to the Planck scale.

MiniBooNE: first results on the muon-to-electron neutrino oscillation search

2008

MiniBooNE's first results on a search for an electron neutrino excess in a muon neutrino beam are presented, together with an analysis of the data within a two neutrino Vμ → Ve appearance-only oscillation context. MiniBooNE finds excellent agreement between data and Standard Model predictions in the oscillation analysis energy region. If neutrino and antineutrino oscillations are the same, MiniBooNE excludes at ~98% confidence level the two neutrino Vμ → Ve appearance-only oscillation interpretation of the LSND anomaly. MiniBooNE also finds a discrepancy at energies below the oscillation analysis range, which is currently not understood and under investigation.

Studying the microlenses mass function from statistical analysis of the caustic concentration

2011

The statistical distribution of caustic crossings by the images of a lensed quasar depends on the properties of the distribution of microlenses in the lens galaxy. We use a procedure based in Inverse Polygon Mapping to easily identify the critical and caustic curves generated by a distribution of stars in the lens galaxy. We analyze the statistical distributions of the number of caustic crossings by a pixel size source for several projected mass densities and different mass distributions. We compare the results of simulations with theoretical binomial distributions. Finally we apply this method to the study of the stellar mass distribution in the lens galaxy of QSO 2237+0305.

A novel approach to quantifying the sensitivity of current and future cosmological datasets to the neutrino mass ordering through Bayesian hierarchic…

2017

We present a novel approach to derive constraints on neutrino masses from cosmological data, while taking into account our ignorance of the neutrino mass ordering. We derive constraints from a combination of current and future cosmological datasets on the total neutrino mass $M_\nu$ and on the mass fractions carried by each of the mass eigenstates, after marginalizing over the (unknown) neutrino mass ordering, either normal (NH) or inverted (IH). The bounds take therefore into account the uncertainty related to our ignorance of the mass hierarchy. This novel approach is carried out in the framework of Bayesian analysis of a typical hierarchical problem. In this context, the choice of the ne…

Spiral Inflation with Coleman-Weinberg Potential

2015

We apply the idea of spiral inflation to Coleman-Weinberg potential, and show that inflation matching well observations is allowed for a symmetry-breaking scale ranging from an intermediate scale to GUT scale even if the quartic coupling $\lambda$ is of $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$. The tensor-to-scalar ratio can be of $\mathcal{O}(0.01)$ in case of GUT scale symmetry-breaking.

Modelling uncertainties in phase-space boundary integral models of ray propagation

2020

Abstract A recently proposed phase-space boundary integral model for the stochastic propagation of ray densities is presented and, for the first time, explicit connections between this model and parametric uncertainties arising in the underlying physical model are derived. In particular, an asymptotic analysis for a weak noise perturbation of the propagation speed is used to derive expressions for the probability distribution of the phase-space boundary coordinates after transport along uncertain, and in general curved, ray trajectories. Furthermore, models are presented for incorporating geometric uncertainties in terms of both the location of an edge within a polygonal domain, as well as …
