On the Background to Hilbert’s Paris Lecture “Mathematical Problems”
2018
Much has been written about the famous lecture on “Mathematical Problems” (Hilbert 1901) that David Hilbert delivered at the Second International Congress of Mathematicians, which took place in Paris during the summer of 1900 (Alexandrov 1979; Browder 1976). Not that the event itself evoked such great interest, nor have many writers paid particularly close attention to what Hilbert had to say on that occasion. What mattered – both for the text and the larger context – came afterward. Mathematicians remember ICM II and Hilbert’s role in it for just one reason: this was the occasion when he unveiled a famous list of 23 problems, a challenge to those who wished to make names for themselves in …
A posteriori error estimates for time-dependent reaction-diffusion problems based on the Payne-Weinberger inequality
2015
We consider evolutionary reaction-diffusion problem with mixed Dirichlet--Robin boundary conditions. For this class of problems, we derive two-sided estimates of the distance between any function in the admissible energy space and exact solution of the problem. The estimates (majorants and minorants) are explicitly computable and do not contain unknown functions or constants. Moreover, it is proved that the estimates are equivalent to the energy norm of the deviation from the exact solution.
Open-ended projects opened up — aspects of openness
2017
Abstract—One of the most important areas of competence for professional engineers is the ability to function well in project work, in particular they need to be able to efficiently solve open-ended problems in different collaborative settings. The development of this ability is however not prominent in engineering education despite numerous authors suggesting openended problems as a pedagogical tool to promote development of collaborative problem solving competence by including elements of group or project work in courses. In our own long experience of using open-ended problems in collaborative student projects, we have identified a lack of systematic progression in learning outcomes and sk…
Technical Education in Jeopardy? Assessing the Interdisciplinary Faculty Structure in a University Merger
2019
AbstractThe social responsibility of universities is to contribute to solving the ‘wicked problems’ facing humanity, including climate change, poverty, conflicts and the lack of energy resources. Interdisciplinarity is an approach that enables solving these problems and helps higher education institutions become more socially responsible while meeting the requirements of their stakeholders. In this chapter, we analyse a multidisciplinary and sector-breaking merger of three higher education institutions in Finland, where the merger is justified by its contribution to solving wicked problems through increased structural interdisciplinarity. We examine the suggested faculty structures and view…
ADHD Symptoms and peer problems: Mediation of executive function and theory of mind
2017
Background: The social maladjustment suffered by many children with attention defi cit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is maintained over time, increasing the risk of subsequent adverse outcomes. The objectives of the study were to explore the mechanisms that operate between ADHD symptoms and social problems with peers, considering the mediation of FE and ToM. Method: 35 children with ADHD and 37 with typical development matched in age and IQ were compared. Parents assessed ToM skills and relationships with peers, and teachers provided EF ratings. Results: The analyses showed statistically signifi cant indirect mediation effects of EF in the relationship between ADHD symptoms and problems in …
Terminoloģijas problēmas tulka darbā digitālās mākslas jomā
2017
Problem Transformation Methods with Distance-Based Learning for Multi-Target Regression
2020
Multi-target regression is a special subset of supervised machine learning problems. Problem transformation methods are used in the field to improve the performance of basic methods. The purpose of this article is to test the use of recently popularized distance-based methods, the minimal learning machine (MLM) and the extreme minimal learning machine (EMLM), in problem transformation. The main advantage of the full data variants of these methods is the lack of any meta-parameter. The experimental results for the MLM and EMLM show promising potential, emphasizing the utility of the problem transformation especially with the EMLM. peerReviewed
The variation of the law applicable to the family property regime in EU regulations n. 2016/1103 and 1104
2021
The essay examines the discipline of EU regulations n. 2016/1103 and 1104 concerning the identification of the law applicable to the family property regime. Specifically, the work reflects on problems arising after a change, during the relationship, of the substantial law applicable to the couple?s property regime.
