Modelling and optimization of modular system for power generation from a salinity gradient
2019
Abstract Pressure retarded osmosis has been proposed for power generation from a salinity gradient resource. The process has been promoted as a promising technology for power generation from renewable resources, but most of the experimental work has been done on a laboratory size units. To date, pressure retarded osmosis optimization and operation is based on parametric studies performed on laboratory scale units, which leaves a gap in our understanding of the process behaviour in a full-scale modular system. A computer model has been developed to predict the process performance. Process modelling was performed on a full-scale membrane module and impact of key operating parameters such as h…
Modeling and Analysis of a New Process for Pyruvate Production
2005
Early process development is crucial for the economic and environmental performance of a final production process. A new process for the production of pyruvate is presented as a case study to show how process modeling and an analysis of the results regarding economic and environmental aspects improves the understanding of the process, its cost structure, and its environmental impact. It also enables the quantification of process improvements and the comparison of alternative designs. The model of the pyruvate production shows how strain and fermentation improvements propagate through the process and affect its economic and environmental performance. The comparison of two alternative purific…
Graphical modeling and query language for hospitals
2013
Abstract Background So far there has been little evidence that implementation of the health information technologies (HIT) is leading to health care cost savings. One of the reasons for this lack of impact by the HIT likely lies in the complexity of the business process ownership in the hospitals. The goal of our research is to develop a business model-based method for hospital use which would allow doctors to retrieve directly the ad-hoc information from various hospital databases. Methods We have developed a special domain-specific process modelling language called the MedMod. Formally, we define the MedMod language as a profile on UML Class diagrams, but we also demonstrate it on example…
Incremental forming using KUKA KR210-2 industrial robot - research regarding design rules and process modelling
2021
Incremental sheet forming (ISF) process show a great potential in the manufacturing of small series production or prototype development parts. One of the sheet metal forming process, where the contact between punch and metal sheet is in a single point, is known as single point incremental forming (SPIF). The part is manufacture with a simple tool, known as punch, that performs a series of combined movements on the vertically and horizontally directions. The paper introduces a study regarding the design rules and process modelling of this unconventional process, by means of a KUKA KR210-2 industrial robot as technological equipment able to control the correlated movement of the punch. Supple…
Approach to Product Quality Requirements in the Context of Aeronautical Domain Process Modeling
2021
Structural components account for a significant proportion of the number of components in an aircraft. The manufacturing methods and techniques by which these products are made, are considered critically, due to the importance of components. The volume and complexity of the requirements of each product are quite high. The intend of this research is to address the interaction of the product requirements in the manufacturing phase, when the value of the product increases the most, reason why the interest is highest. The requirements regarding the realization of the manufacturing processes, specific to the aerospace field, aim at the technological process parameters and are requirements genera…
Towards flexible process support with a CASE shell
1994
CASE technology for improving information systems development (ISD) is mostly based on the creation and verification of IS models using a fixed set of techniques. However, ISD is a complex activity, which requires well selected and suited methodologies and development practices for different situations. This calls for CASE shells (metaCASE environments) in which the methodologies can be tailored. Further, the quality of produced deliverables (e.g. specifications and models) is dependent on the development process. The focus of this paper is on integrating a flexible process support into a CASE shell. The ISD process is specified using a graphical process model, the purposes of which are the…
Exploring Process-Modelling Practice: Towards a Conceptual Model
2008
Despite the importance of process modelling for business process management and related tasks, there are few theories and empirical studies of process-modelling practice available that can serve as the basis for understanding and improving this important practice. To contribute to the development of better theory, this paper proposes a model of process modelling practice, focussing on the relations between process modelling purpose, process modelling process, model artefact, process modelling outcome as well as initial and eventual modelling and process maturity. The proposed model is based on the existing literature and validated in a study of 34 Norwegian process-modelling projects. Resul…
Developing a customizable process modelling environment: Lessons learnt and future prospects
1998
MetaCASE environments are design environments with customisable method support. Currently these environments are shifting from individual production support towards multi-user design environments. When adapting such an environment, the organisational context becomes important. We must focus on and improve the infrastructure (procedures and policies) and support (guidelines, help). Part of organisational support in design environments is process modelling: process models facilitate understanding and communication, process support gives guidance and helps enforcing procedures and policies. In a customisable design environment improvement is seen as a shift, a relatively gradual change that th…
Business Process Models and Information System Usability
2015
Abstract The paper describes the use of business process models for effective managing of information system execution processes and transparent representation of execution statuses. Contrary to traditional approaches where business process models are used only in the initial stages of information system development, the proposed approach suggests direct utilization of business process models during the use of information systems. Information system usability can be improved by using new means of representation, and business process models can serve as an efficient way to visualize execution processes in information systems.
