Acid trehalase is involved in intracellular trehalose mobilization during postdiauxic growth and severe saline stress in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The role of the acid trehalase encoded by the ATH1 gene in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is still unclear. In this work, we investigated the regulation of ATH1 transcription and found a clear involvement of the protein kinase Hog1p in the induction of this gene under severe stress conditions, such as high salt. We also detected changes in the acid trehalase activity and trehalose levels, indicating a role of the acid trehalase in intracellular trehalose mobilization. Finally, the growth analysis for different mutants in neutral and acid trehalases after high salt stress implicates acid trehalase activity in saline stress resistance.

Gene expression profiling was performed on the human neuroglial cell line T98G after treatment with adaptogen ADAPT-232 and its constituents - extracts of Eleutherococcus senticosus root, Schisandra chinensis berry, and Rhodiola rosea root as well as several constituents individually, namely, eleutheroside E, schizandrin B, salidroside, triandrin, and tyrosol. Summary A polyphasic taxonomic approach using phenotypic and molecular genetic techniques, was carried out on the species Vibrio vulnificus in order to study its intraspecific diversity. Seven techniques, including phenotypic (API 20E, BIOLOG, total protein profiles, serotyping, ELISA), and genotypic methods (ribotyping and AFLP), were employed on 80 V. vulnificus strains of biotypes 1 and 2, including 9 reference cultures. DNA-fingerprints seem to be a powerful tool in paternity testing. But the quantification of the results in terms of likelihood and likelihood ratios is a problem, because in most cases the correct genetic model and its parameters are not known. Two approaches have been suggested to circumvent these problems. The use of band sharing rates to distinguish between pairs of relatives and pairs of unrelated individuals, and the calculation of likelihood ratios on the basis of simplifying assumptions.
