Cancer prevention policy in the EU: Best practices are now well recognised; no reason for countries to lag behind

2018

Highlights • National Cancer Control Programmes (NCCPs) are key elements in cancer control. • NCCPs’ role in national cancer policies of EU countries has grown significantly. • Few quantitative assessments are available to evaluate success or failure of the implementation of NCCPs. • Research on methodologies to better assess the effectiveness of cancer prevention policies should be enhanced.

Local development partnership programmes in Sicily: planning cities without plans?

2005

As it is generally known, the main goal of classical town planning is to carefully plan the use of the territory and its resources in order to protect them against incompatible economic activities. Historically, in Italy, as in a number of other European countries, the legal equirement that is derived from this assumption is the acknowledgement that the physical development of cities and territories falls within the main goals of the state. The clash of interests between private, state and community calls for the creation of a set of rules standardising the use of the territory by means of town-planning instruments and laws regulating private actions in the general public interest. The safe…

The leader Programme and the Rise of Rural Development in Spain

2000

In many ways, LEADER (Liaisons Entre Actions de Developpement de l'Economie Rurale) has been a very significant intervention in Spain. Prior to LEADER, rural development policy was almost completely unknown and, for this reason alone, LEADER represented a new force in rural affairs. The invitation to form territorial collaborations was also novel and local actors were quick to perceive it as an important political tool with which to tackle both the problems of rural areas and the challenges presented by the new roles being assigned to the rural world. Furthermore, LEADER has subsequently produced material, local impacts through its ability to generate investment in development projects. The…

Is Communism to Blame for Political Disenchantment in Post-Communist Countries? Cohort Analysis of Adults' Political Attitudes

2014

In this article, we apply a new, original technique of cohort analysis to test empirically whether political disenchantment in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe can be linked to the previous political culture. On the basis of International Social Survey Programme 1996 and 2006 data we find a surprisingly similar and unique cohort effect in all analysed post-communist countries, reflecting persistent generational differences in perceived political competence (interest and understanding of political processes). However, the communist legacy does not seem to be important for explaining low self-efficacy or distrust in political authorities and their responsiveness to c…

An Empirical Analysis of the Determinants of Perceived Inequality

2017

Perception of inequality is important for the analysis of individuals' motivations and decisions and for policy assessment. Despite the broad range of analytic gains that it grants, our knowledge about measurement and determinants of perception of inequality is still limited, since it is intrinsically unobservable, multidimensional, and essentially contested. Using a novel econometric approach, we study how observable individual characteristics affect the joint distribution of a set of indicators of perceived inequality in specific domains. Using data from the International Social Survey Programme, we shed light on the associations among these indicators and how they are affected by covaria…

Pathways to higher education in France and Switzerland: Do vocational tracks facilitate access to higher education for immigrant students?

2014

In this chapter we wish to clarify through which institutional pathways higher education is accessed by immigrant group students in Switzerland and France. We have chosen these two countries because they differ from each other both in their educational systems and in the ways new routes to higher education have been set up through vocationally orientated programmes. The educational landscape in France is characterised by a more school-based system and has a greater tradition of prestigious tertiary education institutions (Duru-Bellat et al., 2008). Moreover, traditional vocational education and training (VET) does not have very high status and therefore fails to attract a large proportion o…

2014

As in nearly all countries, educational authorities in Syria have concerns about improving the quality of education and about there forms they seek to implement to give teachers the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills before and once they start teaching, especially in the context of economic and social change of the magnitude the world lives today. The complexity of the educational context has led the Syrian educational authorities to pay particular attention to programs for initial and continuous training of teachers. To assess the effectiveness of continuous training programs that currently exist in Syria, this thesis has set as its objective to analyze the impact of these pro…
