RNA marker modifications reveal the necessity for rigorous preparation protocols to avoid artifacts in epitranscriptomic analysis
2021
Abstract The accurate definition of an epitranscriptome is endangered by artefacts resulting from RNA degradation after cell death, a ubiquitous yet little investigated process. By tracing RNA marker modifications through tissue preparation protocols, we identified a major blind spot from daily lab routine, that has massive impact on modification analysis in small RNAs. In particular, m6,6A and Am as co-varying rRNA marker modifications, appeared in small RNA fractions following rRNA degradation in vitro and in cellulo. Analysing mouse tissue at different time points post mortem, we tracked the progress of intracellular RNA degradation after cell death, and found it reflected in RNA modific…
Selective oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane over SnO2-promoted NiO catalysts
2012
[EN] Ni-Sn-O mixed oxides catalysts have been investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane. The catalysts were prepared through the evaporation of aqueous solutions of nickel nitrate and tin oxalate and finally calcined in air at 500 degrees C for 2 h. These materials have been characterized by several techniques (N-2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction, High-Resolution Electron Microscopy, temperature programmed reduction, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy of adsorbed CO and O-18/O-16 isotope exchange). The addition of just a tiny amount of tin highly increases the selectivity to ethylene (from ca. 40% to 80-90%). Thus, high selectivity to et…
Les élèves en accompagnement scolaire : adéquation entre public visé et public accueilli
2002
This article examines the adjustment between pupils targeted to study in after school programs and pupils who are already in attendance. Several analyses have been drawn up on a large cross-section of seven and ten year-old pupils and have shown that most of them have social problems and/or are under-achieving. However, a third of the cross-section are not experiencing difficulties and therefore should not have been enrolled. Regarding the selection process of the after school programs, the analysis also shows that weak and foreign pupils more frequently seek school support after the normal school day.
L'école en crise
2008
Panel Discussion: Systems for Data Analysis What they AEE; what they Could be?
1985
CRANE: I’d like to pose a couple of questions: (1) Command Languages — A tool for the astronomer or for the programmer? (2) Portability — Holy Cow or Red Herring? I propose that we start with the first one and see how far we get. If we don’t get past that, fine. If we get on to the question of portability, this is also fine. Let me just open up the discussion by asking Rudi Albrecht to make a comment.
BIOCHARS IN SOILS: TOWARDS THE REQUIRED LEVEL OF SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING
2017
The special issue on Biochar as an Option for Sustainable Resource Management Key priorities in biochar research for future guidance of sustainable policy development have been identified by expert assessment within the COST Action TD1107. The current level of scientific understanding (LOSU) regarding the consequences of biochar application to soil were explored. Five broad thematic areas of biochar research were addressed: soil biodiversity and ecotoxicology, soil organic matter and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, soil physical properties, nutrient cycles and crop production, and soil remediation. The highest future research priorities regarding biochar’s effects in soils were: functional …
Compiler Driven Automatic Kernel Context Migration for Heterogeneous Computing
2014
Computer systems provide different heterogeneous resources (e.g., GPUs, DSPs and FPGAs) that accelerate applications and that can reduce the energy consumption by using them. Usually, these resources have an isolated memory and a require target specific code to be written. There exist tools that can automatically generate target specific codes for program parts, so-called kernels. The data objects required for a target kernel execution need to be moved to the target resource memory. It is the programmers' responsibility to serialize these data objects used in the kernel and to copy them to or from the resource's memory. Typically, the programmer writes his own serializing function or uses e…
Sarcophytolide: a new neuroprotective compound from the soft coral Sarcophyton glaucum
1998
Abstract Bioactivity-guided fractionation of an alcohol extract of the soft coral Sarcophyton glaucum collected from the intertidal areas and the fringing coral reefs near Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt resulted in the isolation of a new lactone cembrane diterpene, sarcophytolide. The structure of this compound was deduced from its spectroscopic data and by comparison of the spectral data with those of known closely related cembrane-type compounds. In antimicrobial assays, the isolated compound exhibited a good activity towards Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Sarcophytolide was found to display a strong cytoprotective effect against glutamate-induced …
Impact of public preventive programmes on oral quality of life of 11 to 12-yr-old school students
2007
Objectives: The objective was to analyze the impact of preventive programmes on oral quality of life in school students aged 11-12 yrs. Study design: In the school year 1996/97, a quasi-experimental study was initiated in Granada province with four groups of students aged 6-7 yrs: Sealant + Fluoride (sealants on first permanent molars applied in the health centre for a 3-yr active programme, and fluoride varnish applied every four months for 3 yrs, n=65), Sealant (only sealants, n=80), Fluoride (only fluoride varnish, n=107) and Control group (n=59). All students were examined every 6 months at school during the 3-yr active programme and received an oral health report after each examination…
How students learn to teach? A case study of instrumental lessons given by Latvian undergraduate performer students without prior teacher training
2012
The purpose of this study was to describe and discuss the way students of the Latvian Academy of Music teach before having entered a teacher training programme. Five hours of students’ teaching work was video-taped, analysed and discussed with them between the spring of 2010 and the winter of 2011. The descriptive and analytic results of this study were also contrasted with their own views on pedagogy, which were drawn from a previous study that had been conducted with the same students and their peers in the fall of 2009. The role of the teaching habits and skills that students have acquired from their own teaching, temperament or background is discussed, as well as their needs starting te…
