17β-Estradiol-dependent regulation of chaperone expression and telomerase activity in the marine sponge Geodia cydonium

1999

It is known that species belonging to the lowest metazoan phylum, the Porifera (sponges), do not develop tumors. Sponge cells share with tumor cells of higher animals at least one characteristic; they contain high levels of telomerase activity, suggesting that they possess a high proliferation capacity. This assumption, however, has not been substantiated experimentally. In addition, sponges show a specific bauplan, leading us to postulate that they undergo apoptosis to replace a given set of cells at a given time. In the present study, 17β-estradiol (βE2) was used as a defined agent to assess its effect on both the telomerase activity and the process of apoptosis in the marine sponge Geodi…

Oxidative stress in diabetic retinopathy

2020

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of acquired blindness in working adults worldwide. Biochemical changes in DR contribute to both the microscopic structural and functional changes in the retina. All these alterations result in retinal damage that can be assessed by funduscopy, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and angioOCT. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction in the mitochondria is considered a causal link between elevated glucose and biochemical abnormalities in the pathophysiology of DR. Moreover, oxidative-induced pathways also seem to provide positive feedback to ROS production, resulting in a vicious cycle. ROS can directly damage lipids, proteins, and DNA, lead…

Diabetic Retinopathy and Oxidative Stress

2014

Abstract Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of acquired blindness in working age adults worldwide. Biochemical changes in DR contribute to both the microscopic structural and functional changes in the retina. All these alterations result in macroscopic retinal damage that can be assessed by funduscopy. The overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mitochondria is considered a causal link between elevated glucose and biochemical abnormalities in the pathophysiology of DR. Moreover, oxidatively induced pathways also seem to provide positive feedback to ROS production, resulting in a vicious cycle. ROS can directly damage lipids, proteins and DNA, leading to cell death…

Activation of Mitochondria-Driven Pathways by Artemisinin and Its Derivatives

2014

Mitochondria have recently emerged as promising agents for cancer therapy. Of particular interest and potential clinical relevance are agents that target these organelles, promoting cell death. There are literally thousands of compounds that act on mitochondria and destabilise them. Of these, naturally occurring compounds are particularly interesting, since they are often more ‘biocompatible’; besides, natural compounds can be lead drugs for the design of novel and more efficient anti-cancer agents. In this paper, we focus on the natural product artemisin and its semisynthetic derivatives, and document the molecular mechanism of their activity and their potential use as clinically relevant …

From needs to competencies : a case study on the integration of a rights based approach into NGO practises

2010

The objective of this qualitative case study is to provide knowledge on the possibilities of incorporating a rights based approach (RBA) into practises of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the context of development and children. The study is confined to examine the possibilities of RBA in realising children’s rights within the child sponsorship programme (CSP) of a Finnish NGO, Fida International (Fida), and the conceptualisation of the child in regard to different approaches. The theoretical framework is built on contemporary development discourse concerning the approximation of human rights and development as well as the underlying reasons for the emergence of RBA as a contributio…

On the trail of local welfare innovations in rural Finland

2019

Final Draft In Finland, the rural areas have been most affected by the developments threatening the survival of the welfare state as well as by conflicting efforts to save it. However, there are rural communities that have—as a response to the mainstream policy emphasizing economic efficiency and individual responsibility—developed innovative solutions to secure their welfare. Based on a case study focusing on two of such communities, these local welfare innovations are a result from a combination of external causes and local resources including the sense of community and a diverse enough community structure. The authors argue that in the context of welfare policy, the promotion of local we…

A single bout of physical exercise does not affect young adults’ executive functions

2020

Summary Study aim. The purpose of the current study is to determine the impact of single bouts of physical exercise of different duration and intensity on young adults’ executive functions. Material and methods. The study employed 81 participants (37 females, 44 males) ranging between 19 and 39 years (mean age: 24.6 ± 4.08 years; mean height: 168 ± 9.67 cm; mean weight: 67.2 ± 13.0 kg). The executive functions were assessed through the Stroop task, the Tower of London test, and the Corsi block test. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental conditions (30-second Wingate test condition, an incremental intensity exercise test, and a submaximal constant-intensity tes…

Model wielowymiarowej profilaktyki pozytywnej w teorii i praktyce pedagogicznej

2019

Artykuł opisuje teoretyczne oraz empiryczne założenia autorskiego modelu wielowymiarowej profilaktyki pozytywnej. Ponadto prezentuje sposób jego urzeczywistnienia w praktyce pedagogicznej, przedstawiając strukturę autorskiego programu profilaktycznego Wsparcie wielowymiarowego rozwoju młodzieży, zrealizowanego wśród wychowanków Domu Dziecka w Chmielowicach. Teoretyczne podstawy modelu odnoszą się do teorii głównych i teorii szczegółowych. Natomiast założenia empiryczne sprowadzają się do metodyki konstruowania programów profilaktycznych, a więc kryteriów doboru i metod oddziaływań profilaktycznych, uczestników oraz strategii ewaluacyjnej. Model wielowymiarowej profilaktyki pozytywnej w prak…

Latvijas ģimenes paaudzēs, 2018

2019

Pētījums aptver visas vecuma grupas: gan jaunus cilvēkus patstāvīgās dzīves sākumā (no 18 gadu vecuma), gan pieredzes bagātus — citās vecuma grupās (līdz 79 gadu vecumam), sniedzot precīzu informāciju par cilvēka dzīves galvenajiem demogrāfiskajiem notikumiem un cikliem vairāku paaudžu dzīvē, sākot jau no 1950. gadu vidus.
