The standard view concerning Case assignment or valuation is that Case is valued to determiner phrases (DPs) in syntax. Recently, Kayne has proposed an alternative model, in which Case is valued to lexical elements rather than to phrases. This article cites several facts from Finnish in support of this model. A detailed Kaynean model of Case is developed. The existing international standards suggest a methodology to assign a specific functional class to a road, by the values of some features, both geometrical and use-related. Sometimes, these characteristics are in contrast with each other and direct the analyst towards conflicting classes for a road or, worse, one or more of these features vary heterogeneously along the road. We develop a public goods game (PGG) to measure cooperation and conditional cooperation in young children. Our design addresses several obstacles in adapting simultaneous and sequential PGGs to children who are not yet able to read or write, do not possess advanced abilities to calculate payoffs, and only have a very limited attention span. It features the combination of haptic offline explanation, fully standardized audiovisual instructions, computerized choices based on touchscreens, and a suitable incentive scheme. We base the case study on the empirical material of a project that aimed to gather knowledge of the collections of the Finnish Data Processing Museum Association. How Do Students Value the Importance of Twenty-first Century Skills?

Frameworks of twenty-first century skills have attained a central role in school development and curriculum changes all over the world. There is a common understanding of the need for meta-skills such as problem solving, reasoning, collaboration, and self-regulation. This article presents results from a Finnish study, in which 718 school pupils aged 11 to 15 years were asked to anticipate the skills they would need in the future. Accordingly, they were asked to value and rank the twenty-first century skills listed in existing frameworks and pick out those they regarded as the most important they had learned. Fuzzy dynamic sliding mode control design for high order disturbed systems

In this paper, the problem of fuzzy dynamic sliding mode control design is investigated for a class of disturbed systems. Specifically, the fuzzy controller is constructed based on one feedback signal to estimate the unknown nonlinear terms and to develop the sliding mode control according to the fuzzy rules. Furthermore, it possesses the characteristic of simplicity in design and effectiveness in attenuating chattering. Finally, a numerical example is included to demonstrate the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed method.

This article explores how traditional scores obtained from different forced-choice (FC) formats relate to their true scores and item response theory (IRT) estimates. Three FC formats are considered from a block of items, and respondents are asked to (a) pick the item that describes them most (PICK), (b) choose the two items that describe them the most and the least (MOLE), or (c) rank all the items in the order of their descriptiveness of the respondents (RANK). Vascular Contraction Model Based on Multi-agent Systems

This paper presents a first approximation to the simulation of vascular smooth muscle cell following an agent-based simulation approach. This simulation incorporates mathematical models that describe the behaviour of these cells, which are used by the agents in order to emulate vascular contraction. A first tool, implemented in Netlogo, is provided to allow the performance of the proposed simulation.
