Recurrence Quantification Analysis as a Methodological Innovation for School Improvement Research
2021
Contains fulltext : 240653.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) School improvement and educational change can be facilitated by learning through reflection, as this allows teachers to discover ways to develop and adapt to change. Higher levels of engagement in reflection have been found to be beneficial, but it is unclear from which everyday routine in engagement in reflection higher levels arise, and thus whether occasions to make knowledge explicit should be organized with a certain constancy. In this study, we therefore used a conceptualization of teacher learning through reflection as a situated and dynamic process in which available environmental information, learning activities,…
Today's news — tomorrow's context: A dynamic model of news processing
1997
We are proposing a feedback model of news processing, assuming that news reception is guided by media input as well as by existing cognitive structures. However, these structures are in turn shaped by former media coverage. In our study we examine viewers’ processing of TV news, comparing objective news content (content analysis) to subjective meaning of news stories (viewer interviews). Results show that viewers interpret information about new events in the context of past events, themselves mainly a reflection of former media coverage.
Computing and communication convergence reflection to legislation system and higher education programs
2017
Concept of computing and communication convergence has many years of history — as strategic concept it started about 1977 and yet have many definitions. The idea behind convergence concept mostly related to getting closer computing and telecommunication common technologies, services and service provider's business models. In this academic position paper some less significant obstacles of influence-reflection of convergence to legislation system, higher education programs and industry labor market are discussed.
When Economics Meets Arts… in the Classroom
2016
Abstract The aim of this paper is to examine the opportunities for the use of art as an educational resource to stimulate creativity in the teaching of Economics. The need to promote skill development to encourage reflection, critical analysis, imagination, interpretation of reality, the anticipation of change, the seeking of alternatives, etc. is essential in this area of knowledge. The analysis of the use of art as an educational tool through a classroom experience shows the opportunities offered by this approach, although the extent of its use in university education in non-artistic materials is still very low.
Evaluating and developing teacher instructional practices in economics using a new video-based test
2022
Abstract Teachers’ instructional practices are important for student learning. However, there are few tools for evaluating instructional practices in social studies. To this end, we present a video-based instrument with teacher-student interactions for assessing teaching practices in a high school economics course. We investigate, using an iterative design-based methodology, the adaptation and validation of a test originally developed in Germany for use in the United States. We found that experienced economics teachers and those with more content knowledge demonstrated higher-level instructional skills, and were more flexibile with their thinking. Inexperienced economics teachers and those …
A new multimodal RGB and polarimetric image dataset for road scenes analysis
2020
International audience; Road scene analysis is a fundamental task for both autonomous vehicles and ADAS systems. Nowadays, one can find autonomous vehicles that are able to properly detect objects present in the scene in good weather conditions but some improvements are left to be done when the visibility is altered. People claim that using some non conventional sensors (infra-red, Lidar, etc.) along with classical vision enhances road scene analysis but still when conditions are optimal. In this work, we present the improvements achieved using polarimetric imaging in the complex situation of adverse weather conditions. This rich modality is known for its ability to describe an object not o…
How science teachers learn to reflect by analyzing jointly observed lessons
2015
The aim of the article is to present a teacher's professional learning model implemented within the project PROFILES of FP7 Science in Society. The article reveals the contribution of the joint observation in real-life classroom environment and lesson analyses to the development of the capability of teachers' reflection skills. The survey of teachers, conclusions of experts and teachers' feedback all demonstrate that the model enhances the development of science and mathematics teachers' reflection skills. At the same time the article gives guidelines to follow when this model is practiced with different groups of teachers. Efficient teaching of inquiry skills in the school is impossible wi…
A Theoretical Reflection Based on Children’s Opinions About Their Safety to Rethink Different Dimensions of Sustainability in Cities
2020
In the last years, it has increased the interest of the scientific and professional community to know especially what makes children feel satisfied and what generates well-being. Well-being is determined by cultural values from a society that seals off or facilitates the elaboration of personal goals. Addressing well-being is undoubtedly a complex task; even more when it comes to children, since it requires adopting a multicultural and multidisciplinary approach. Inquiring about the different dimensions of children’s well-being implies paying attention to their own opinions and references. Starting from the children’s reference to a local cemetery—which appeared coincidentally in various dr…
Learning via Summarizing Infographics Assignment in Software Engineering Management e-Course?
2020
This Research-to-Practice, Work in Progress Paper focuses on how learners experience creation of infographics as a summarizing assignment in an advanced level e-course on software engineering management (SEM). We have previously investigated how learners perceive infographics as a repeated reflection assignment during a requirements engineering e-course. To complement this research project, we studied how learners experience the use of infographics as a method for summarizing a whole software engineering management course in e-education setting. The SEM course participants (N=36) found that infographics as a summarizing assignment required complex learning that was altogether deemed highly …
