The Fifth Lesson: Students’ Responses to a Patterning Task Across the Four Countries

The chapter reports a comparative analysis of problem-solving activities in classrooms in the four countries. The problem students work with is a patterning task, taken from a major international comparative study. The idea of analyzing this group work across countries is to see what traces of algebra learning may be discerned in the work of the students. The results show the complexities of early algebra learning by presenting in detail the obvious variations in how students tackle the problem in more or less algebraic ways. In the small-group work in classrooms, students pool their ideas allowing for the discourse to build on itself in a cumulative manner.
Mathematical Modelling with Biology Undergraduates: Balancing Task Difficulty and Level of Support

Participating in such an important editorial work is a great responsibility, as Prof. Veenhoven is a pioneer in happiness studies and we have all read and studied his books and attended his lectures in different parts of the world.
On the Reception of Grassmann’s Work in Germany during the 1870’s

It has often been remarked that Grassmann’s mathematics was not widely appreciated during his lifetime. Although awareness of the dimensions of his achievements began to spread in the early 1870’s, even in Germany relatively few mathematicians appear to have been well acquainted with either the original 1844 edition of Grassmann’s Ausdehnungslehre or the mathematically more accessible edition of 1862. The main reasons for this weak and rather delayed reception have been described often enough---Grassmann’s isolated working environment and his nearly impenetrable language---but there are a number of related aspects that still deserve closer consideration.1

This introductory chapter describes the fundamentals for later analysis, modeling and discussion of choice tasks and behavior. Figure 2.1 depicts the basic elements of the choice process which are relevant for the present work. On the left hand side, we see the general problem the decision makers are faced with: the choice task. Generally speaking, a choice task defines the problem of choosing the preferred out of a discrete and finite set of alternatives. The decision makers’ preferences determine what the preferred alternative is. Thus, in Sect. 2.1, we define both choice tasks and preferences.
Calibration and simulation of ASM2d at different temperatures in a phosphorous removal pilot plant

In this work, an organic and nutrient removal pilot plant was used to study the temperature influence on phosphorus accumulating organisms. Three experiments were carried out at 13, 20 and 24.5 degrees C, achieving a high phosphorus removal percentage in all cases. The ASM2d model was calibrated at 13 and 20 degrees C and the Arrhenius equation constant was obtained for phosphorus removal processes showing that the temperature influences on the biological phosphorus removal subprocesses in a different degree. Intra-individual variability in task performance after cognitive training is associated with long-term outcomes in children

AbstractThe benefits and mechanistic effects of working memory training in children are the subject of much research and debate. The cumulative evidence indicates that training can alter brain structure and function in the short term and have lasting effects on behaviour. We show that five weeks of working memory training led to greater activity in prefrontal and striatal brain regions, better accuracy, and reduced intra-individual variability in response times. The reduction in intra-individual variability can be explained by changes to the evidence accumulation rates and thresholds in a sequential sampling decision model.
